I ahve chronic constipation because of IBS since I was 20 years old and I am now 41. I have tried everything offered to me to remedy this problem. Nothing has ever worked like Amitiza has. Finally, I have relief and an answer.

I started with the 8 mcg dose twice daily, which immediately gave me hours of diarrhea, and continued to do so until, after a few months, it gradually became less and less effective. I "limped along" with it by taking dulcolax before my morning dose. Back to diarrhea. I finally got in to see a GI P.A., who increased the dose to 24 mcg, and diarrhea came back until this dose also became less effective. On the higher dose, my sense of taste changed and my fodmap sensitivities got worse. I also had increased gas and bloating (painful), upper abdominal bloating immediately after eating. I lost 10 lbs in two months, not being able to eat well. She now has me trying a different prescription med. No diarrhea, and food flavors taste more normal. Far less gas, bloating and pain. I started Lubiprostone for chronic idiopathic constipation that I've had basically most of my life--I'm 64. I had been taking an OTC stool softener for awhile, which worked well for me but my doctor thought we should try lubiprostone.
Results were severe diarrhea for the first few weeks on 2 pills a day. My GI recommended one pill daily with a meal. So I did that for a couple of weeks, diarrhea stopped, but I became constipated, no surprise. It's been downhill since then. I've been taking the pill 2ce daily, with breakfast and dinner, but I'm basically constipated. I go every 2-3 days, but have to strain, and it's still difficult. I plan to call my GI this week for a change.Read More Read Less

Not effective, at least for me. Lots of gases and bloating. A waste of money!

This worked really well restroom wise. But it caused me to not be able to breathe for a while. Ended up switching to linzess because I thought it was an allergy. It's a scary thing when you can't breathe. Linzess doesn't work nicely bathroom wise. I highly recommend this product anyway because not everyone reacts to medicine the same. It made bathroom time pure cathartic.

I am a 57 year old female in fairly good physical shape; however, I've had constipation issues all my life. I've been taking this for about 2 yrs and have been very satisfied with it. I do take it with Colace 2x per day. I tried once per day but with minimal results. I've always had gas problems so I cannot address whether this has increased or decreased with use of Amitiza (I take 24mcg 2x per day). Patiently waiting for generic as Amitiza is quite expensive even with my insurance.

Well I am not constipated any more. Thats because I now have severe soupy poopy! Can it be healthy to go like this all the time? Is there a happy medium? I have to be settled at home when I take this and I am on the minimum dosage.

I was switched to this medication when Zelnorm was taken off the market. Not as effective, and found it to work better with stool softeners. I have a lot of bloating and gas with this medication as well. Unlike Zelnorm too, when Amitiza begins to work, I must be near a restroom. I have not felt any better with the use of this drug.

I have been taking 24 mcg twice daily since May 12 and the medicine has not helped me. My insurance company does not pay for this. Also, I am taking Miralax once daily. I am still gassy, constipated, bloated, and light cramping. I have no clue what the next step is since my gasteronologist has not diagnose me? I guess I will find out June 25.

I have no idea if it REALLY works or not. I also take daily stool softeners, Glycolax and 30 grams of fiber. With all of this, some days I do have a BM, some days I don't. That's my form of IBS. Before the IBS no problem. Does the drug work? Can't say it does or not. Sure can't say it works that well for me or I wouldn't need all that other stuff, would I?

It is an easy medication to take and works well. One thing that is very good about this medication is that it works but does not cause symptoms like diarehea.
