I have been taking this medication for almost 8 years for anxiety issues. It has been extremely helpful for me. Very recently I was experiencing a bit of anxiety for the first time in many years, so my dosage was increased from 7.5 mg 2X/day to 10 mg 2X/day. The increased dosage has eliminated the anxiety attacks. I see that a lot of people review this medication after only being on it for les...

Took a week or two to see changes in symptoms, and took a couple of months to find an appropriate dosage. Combined with therapy, buspirone has been very helpful in reducing anxious thoughts and feelings, and not feeling "locked" in to anxious thought patterns. At 15mg 2x/day, I will occasionally experience some dizziness after taking it, usually in the AM if I eat a light breakfast. This is usually only when I am moving/driving, and subsides quickly and is not an issue more than one hour after taking the pill. Overall, the cost/benefit ratio is clear- this helps enormously, with mild and infrequent side effects.Read More Read Less

This was prescribed to me to treat constantly high anxiety (i didnt have attacks per se, just nonstop severe anxiety). It will take a few weeks for it to kick in so just hang in there. Started off taking 15mg a day x3. That worked for me, but was feeling a little anxious yet after a few months so the dose was doubled 10mg x3....that was a little too much, felt kinda dizzy. You have to find the sweet spot as to your dosage and work with the doctor to find it. This is a great long term med that will knock out the actual anxiety unlike the short term, instant relief that benzos provide....but in reality they solve nothing as you're only masking the problem. Not saying benzos arentfor some people but I feel they dont help in the long run for many people. As for side effects I do notice dizzyness about an hour after taking it, but I almost enjoy it. I do get very sleepy on it as well, especially in the early morning and mid-day. Sleepyness is random and maybe lasts 30 mins to an hour. Still, well worth it over the awful experience of severe anxiety that consumes your life. I have noticed random ringing in the ears that goes away in a few seconds. Doesn't seem to affect my sleep quality personally. Everyone is different, but give this a chance. It did make my life better.Read More Read Less

I expected to feel "off" or not totally in control like a xanax would make me feel, which i hate, but this medication doesn't make me feel not in control. The fact that It take several weeks to get the full effect is kind of a pain in the butt since i like everyone else like to see immediate results. But overall I like it. It's subtle which is nice since I have two kids and don't want to take anything that makes me sleepy or disoriented.

My doctor prescribed this as good for anxiety just like Tranxene which I have been taking for 20 plus years with no problems. Well, other than you can no longer take Tranxene and similar medication while taking pain meds. This pill was prescribed at 15mg twice a day. I liked that the pill was easy to break, but that is where it ended. I felt like my chest was going to explode and was so jittery I could not stand myself. This pill was taken over a weekend and I stopped taking it on the third day. I absolutely could not deal with the shortness of breath, headaches and agitated nerve tingling. I am going back to my Tranxene, would not recommend this medication. Read More Read Less

Have been on Buspar for 5 months now. It is no benzo. After research, I asked my psychiatrist to try this medication afte being on various antidepressants, antipsychotics and anxiolytics or GAD. She said it's "just like benzos without the euphoria". Personally, I have never felt euphoric using a benzo, but simply 'normal'. Buspar does not compare. Doses higher than 5mg give an awful, indescribable head feeling. It does nothing for my anxiety, even when going up to 20mg 3 times daily. For some it seems to be be the magic bullet. Despite weaning off of benzos before beginning treatment I have felt none of the anxiolytic or antidepressant (or slight stimulant) effects some have noted. I do wish this extremely expensive drug was what would finally help. But here I am, back on clonazepam and miserable about being dependent on a drug that forms part of such a highly controversial class. Read More Read Less

I am using this (10mg twice a day) as an adjunct to Prozac 20mg for my severe recurrent major depressive disorder. It has definitely elevated my mood and I am much more engaged in my life. I feel much less stressed out too.

If you experience tons of side effects with SSRIs/SNRIs/and Benzos this might be the drug for you. Been on it off and on for 2-3 years. First off it will take at least a month to fully start working as it needs to build up in your system similar to Klonopin. Also it is usually taken 2-3 times a day. Currently I am taking 15mg 3 times a day. The side effects at this dosage are slightly higher than times I was taking 10mg twice a day but it's mostly worth it and much better than side effects from other drugs. The main side effect I experience is slight nervousness after taking it that will last about 15 minutes when it happens and does not happen every time I take it. I also experience constricted pupils and everything seems bright but this only happens with the nervousness and never on it's own. I have tried basically every anxiety/depression drug for my social anxiety and general anxiety including multiple SSRIs (Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro) SNRIs (Effexor, Cymbala) and Benzos (Ativan, Klonopin) and Buspar is the only that works without a ton of side effects for me. Ativan also works well for my anxiety but gave me erectile dysfunction. In fact every drug above gave me problems with erections except Buspar. Also took Wellbutrin which didn't give me ED but made me angry as did Paxil. Effexor made me vomit, Klonopin wouldn't even allow me to get an erection, and Zoloft did nothing for my anxiety. The list of side effects and bad results go on and on and the only reason it's relevant for this review of Buspirone is because Buspirone never gave me any of these problems. It is not a miracle drug and might not work as well as stronger pills but if you are looking for a little help with social/general anxiety, and your side effects story is similar to mine than Buspar is worth a try.Read More Read Less

No matter what time of day, I took a low dose, it would cause for me to have a terrible headache and chest pain. Stopped taking it right away and have not had either issue since.

Soon after taking buspirone, my chest felt less heavy. I am dealing with traffic, an ensecure husband, and being suspended from work. I felt like the area was closing in on me. I had no real control on the inside. I would even blow up on the family. Now I feel calmer talking to people, and the traffic didn't feel so bad. I need to take 3 pills a day to really get it in my system. I am so happy my new doctor understood my medical needs. My plan is make sure meds are taken before I drive. No drowsinessRead More Read Less

I have had problems with aniexty for several years. Just last month I addressed this issue as I was having night terror dreams. I had horrible chest heaviness and struggled with everything that would come my way. After 2 weeks I am completely back to my original self. I have huge amounts of energy, no PTSD and I am getting better every day.

I have been on buspirone for general anxiety for 10 years. It has changed my life. It continues to be effective with no need for dose increases; ie, no development of tolerance. It doesn't treat panic attacks, so still need an ativan once every three or four months, but gives me a very low daily anxiety level and very few panic attacks. The side effects decrease and are gone after a few months. For me, a life-changer.
