My mother had a hemorraghic stroke with no prior problems with memory or dementia. Four days following the stroke my mother disappeared and an evil twin appeared. Instant and full-on vascular dementia. I heard about this drug for treatment of Alzheimer's and talked to her doctor about it. He said it was exclusively an Alzheimer's drug and had not been tested for vascular dementia. He agreed t...

My mother has been taking Aricept for 5 or 6 months and it helped a little, but seems to have tapered off. So her doctor put her on Namenda and after 2 months she had 2 very vidid Hallucinations. She can recall these better then her everyday events. So I called her doctor’s office after reading some of these reviews about the drug and told them about how my mother was having Hallucinations. The nurse wanted me to keep her on the drug, and bring her in to test for a bladder infection. Even though my mother was not having any symptoms of a bladder infection. I told them I thought it was the drug, and I was taking her off. I really just wanted to know if she needed to taper off. I was told that she could just stop taking them, and the doctor would call me when she got back in 3 weeks! What is wrong with our medical profession? Let’s just ignore the elephant in the room! When Hallucinations is one of the more commen side affects!. Maybe I could see the nurses point of view if my mom was having fever and signs of a bladder infection, but none of that was true. Like some of these reviews I just thought it was her dementia getting worse. But it has only been 3 days, and I can tell the difference already She is thinking clearer and is not fixsated on the Hallucinations (that she insist were real events). It is important to remember, even if side affects don’t show up right away it is most likely the drugs we are taking, that would seem to make the most sence….but what do I knw??? . I was having trouble remembering the correct routes to get me to local stores and couldn't remember what I ate for breakfast. An MRI showed calcium formations on my brain. My doctor prescribed Namenda and for 5 years I functioned normally on 1 pill a day. Then I started having problems and was increased to 2 pills a day. I no longer have any unusual memory problems.

My dr. prescribed this for migraine, and after a week, I have had to stop taking it. I suffer from chronic daily migraine, and have had my CDM under control, but on this med, my migraines got so much worse that I couldn't work - they haven't been that bad in a very long time. Namenda also made me dizzy and light-headed, and extremely fatigued. Disappointing experience with this "off label" treatment for severe migraines.

My sister was put on this med 7/2011 and still cannot rationalize with every day activities. Diarreah, high blood pressure, depression and irritability are her side effects since starting Nemanda. She has shown no improvement in the past year and I do not believe it is effective any longer. She recalls much of our childhood and our adult lives but recent (past 6~8 years) seem to be gone forever. It doesn't seem Nemanda is anything other than a fear pill (you'd be worse off without it) the medical industry relys on because they won't address Alzheimers, even after 30+ years of studies. Doctors will not sway from the popular choice for fear of being wrong and the medical industry will not effectively address the cure for memory loss even after 30+ years of studies, so they have made another fundraiser and employment opportunity out of it, nothing more. This medication has to be imported to add insult to the fact our medical industry can only precribe not develope effective medications.Read More Read Less

My husband has dementia with Lewy Body disease which impacts his brains front lobe. Before Namenda he was hallusinating daily very disoriented, and his short term memory was really bad. He is now on his 5th month and his memory has improved and just recently had a few hallusinations. It is much better than were he was before. He still gets confused easily.

My mother has had several strokes, but at 89 is very alert and active. Since being put on this drug she has become extremely agitated and paranoid. I've asked the doctor to cut the dose from 10 mgs a day to 5. Several of you have suggested this same response to the drug. Is there anything else out there that is effective? I want my mother back!!

I am 70 yr old lady. I have had 3 concussions during the past 5 years. My short-term memory almost lost, often had difficulty expressing expressing my thoughts- I thought it but couldn't say it. even with Therapy I became more frustrated with myself, began to feel I was in a "fog". I am active and continue to work part time. I have always been alert, thought & responded quickly. I've taken Namenda 8 weeks. Short term memory greatly improved, speak more easily. My mind seems clear (the fog is gone). No problems the first 5 weeks. These past 3 weeks my tongue is sore, slightly swollen & I feel nausea about 75% of the time. The only change in medications is the addition of Nemanda. We are decreasing the dose for the to see if this is an allergic reaction. Unfortunately I have put on 5 lbs even though I have a poor appetite. Read More Read Less

I was given this treatment for cognitive impairment that includes not understanding words and names, loss of focus/understanding, slurring of and halting speech, loss of words, & include visual disturbances. I have had many tests and found no problems, and we believe these are migraines. I took the starter dose through week three and was about to enter wk 4 when I finally realized my EXTREME INCREASE in symptoms (without the migraine) MUST SURELY be due to these pills. I am going off them until I can reach the doctor for advice. I was unable to speak understandably several times today, as if I was trying to hide being drunk.Read More Read Less

My father is 83 yrs. old, he had a minor stroke and seemed to be distance. His Neourologist gave him a starter kit. I noticed postive changes in his behavior within a couple of days. So far only positive results. I also added other herbs to his diet to help with minimize side affects.

My husband has been taking Aricept for 2 years or more, so doctor added Namenda 2 months ago, gradually increasing dose to 2 a day. My husband starting repeating things to me every 5 minutes and just wanted to sit outside all day even in 100plus weather. He just sits. I spoke to the doctor and he took him off of the drug. He has been off 4 days now, and I am waiting and hoping for the best.

My father of 84yrs. was put on Namenda starter card of 5 mg. twice a day. Then moved to 10 mg.twice a day. He was remembering so much from the past that it seemed like a his memory was so clear! Then in his fourth week the Doctor add another drug to go with Namenda....? Aricept ? That is when his world turned inside out! He became ZOMBIE like, the hospital couldn't find that he had a stroke or any other problems. So the final bill with the diagnosis was that he was over medicated . This last week they (Doctors) came to the conclusion that the other medications may be the cause! Read More Read Less
