What in the WORLD is going on, here? After 12 years of drinking virtually every day (moderate to extreme amounts) and desperately wanting to quit, I finally made it in to see my GP. I am the worlds most sinister alcoholic. No DUI, no legal problems, generally stayed out of embarrassing situations, successful professional and a complete and total drunk. Drink in the mornings, throughout the day a...

maybe i should be writing the doctor who prescribed the drug a bad review instead, but he never mentioned it would mak me deathly ill (he took a urine and knew i relapsed once since leaving treatment) its been about 21 hours now since i took it but im still in awful pain. the first 10 hr the worst, just hiding under my sheets writhing in muscle and stomach pain. diarrhea. awful. 10x worse than any normal withdrawl i ever felt. forget that.

I have drank since I was 17 and became an alcoholic. Not able to quit on my own. Now I'm 44 years old and dr. prescribed this medication and I call it a wonder drug. It worked great for me.

After 22 years of drinking and now completely unable to control it once starting and having periods where I can finish two bottles of wine plus a little more if necessary, I decided to try the medicinal route to changing things. Therapy and counselling has helped me resolve childhood issues and made me happier in general but this habit of not being able to drink reasonable amounts and relapsing badly after periodic abstinence periods has made life almost unmanageable. Naltrexone has been licensed in the UK for just over a year now for alcohol treatment. Regular GPs (General Physicians) through the NHS (National Health Service) may not know much about it but should be able to point you to an addiction clinic within the NHS system where an addiction counsellor with the guidance of another GP should be able to prescribe it. I took my first pill yesterday evening. After waiting for an hour, I felt a little calm but wanted to try the Sinclair Method by opening a bottle of wine. I must tell you I haven't drank that slowly in ages and I couldn't get past a glass and a half. It seemed pointless after that. I have had no bad side effects. Just a little tired today. I am going to take this pill along with the Sinclair method and see if I can truly break my alcohol addiction. So far things look as good as other people are indicating.Read More Read Less

Have no desire to drink, however I feel very funky. I have a slight headache and feel like I would when hungover. Took 50mg. Going to reduce dosage to see if this will eliminate the grogginess. Want to continue,I think the benefits will outweigh the negatives.

I am a chronic alcoholic and abused alcohol severely for over 25 years. Naltrexone has been a Godsend for me, and I implore you if you are struggling and failing with alcoholism to give this a try. It literally helped save my life. When I take Naltrexone, the desire to drink alcohol is completely gone for me. I mean completely gone. Normally, even in periods of sobriety, I have an overwhelming desire to drink, and when I start, I cannot stop short of the hospital and urgent sedation to prevent seizures. I know Naltrexone is supposed to inhibit the effect of alcohol if I do drink, but for me, there is just no desire anymore. As great as it is for my life not to be drinking anymore, it is even nicer not living with that awful craving all the time. I have noticed no side effects at all, and in fact don't notice anything except I just don't feel like drinking anymore. This medication truly freed me from misery. Please, please at least give this a try if alcohol is ruining your life like it was mine. I haven't felt like having a drink in over 18 months, and I hope the urge doesn't come back. I've cut my dose in half to save money with no noticeable decrease in effectiveness, but I would go back up if I noticed any decrease in effectiveness. Please give it a shot. It could be a miracle for you. Sincerely, Erik ERead More Read Less

When I first took it, I broke a cycle of daily heavy drinking but only for 10 days. Then, when I drank a glass of wine with my sister who was visiting, this trigered an everyday drinking again while on the medication. Then I noticed that everyday I could drink more and more even while on the medication. It got to the point where I was back to square A. I then stopped the medication.

Some joint pain at night, which disrupts sleeping. Overall, this medication has had little effect. My excess drinking has been curbed, but I believe that I could have quit without this medication. If anything, it has become a psychological crutch foe me.

I have been receiving the monthly naltrexone injections for about 9 months. Other than injection site bruising and temporary swelling, I have had no other side effects. In conjunction with other recovery regimes (AA, CBT)it has been very effective. I am an alcoholic who would relapse, detox, maintain a few months sober and relapse again. This medication, in conjunction with a solid recovery program, has removed all my cravings, obsessions and compulsions to drink despite the fact that I have plenty of wreckage from my last drinking episode to make me want to crawl back into the bottle. My only question is how long does someone take this? Is this something that people like me take for the rest of my life? Read More Read Less

This drug Naltrexone has left me with an overall bad experience. It has been prescribed for for me in combination with a few drugs. In each case I am left with nausea, vomiting, heartburn, headache and severe dizziness. I either have an allergic reaction to this drug or simply cannot tolerate it. It has been prescribed in pill form in combination with morphine and two other C2 pain medications. I've not had a good exiperience with this drug.

I've been prescribed and used this going on three years. I have no desire to drink, getting drunk, or drinking and driving. It has made me more aware of how alcohol had controlled my life for about 30years. I am also taking it to help supress my compulsive gambling. Taking this helps, but attending Gamblers Anonymous also helps. Its works great to supress alcohol.

I was a long time pill user that went through the Rapid Drug Detox at one of a few facilities in the U.S. After detox the doctor put me on this med. Appears to be working good as I have no cravings for pills (opiates). And the med. has not caused any issues, I think it's going to work and I was clearly ready to stop the madness too.

I stopped abusing narcotic painkillers cold turkey with Naltrexone. I went from 14-15 pills a day to ZERO! The only side effect for me: I get a little anxious right after taking it and that lasts for about 30 minutes. I don't know if you can truly understand how amazing it is to go from 14-15 pills a day to ZERO without withdrawal, unless you experience the hurt of addiction. The only precaution that my doctor didn't tell me about is that if you take it within 7-10 days of taking narcotics it will INSTANTLY cause amplified withdrawal for about the first few hours or so. Stop taking whatever you're taking and as you get closer to needing a fix, take Naltrexone instead and you should be fine. This medication makes me indifferent to narcotics. I have been offered pills since I started treatment and they don't even appeal to me. I literally cannot even remember or feel the allure, attraction or reason behind my drug abuse. I don't even think about it anymore. It's always a good idea to seek treatment, counseling or 12 -Step Recovery. Don't just stop your substance abuse but seek to recognize underlying issues that drive you to chemicals in the first place.Read More Read Less

i was a heavy drinker and had gotten into trouble. i was prescribed this and have remained for sober for almost 5 years. i truly believe this drug works for those of us who drank heavily periodically, quit for a month or two, drank again, quit again. this drug is great for those of us who tend to "binge drink" and drink to get drunk. very wonderful feeling being sober with little to no side effects...awesome!!

Having had a severe drinking problem for over 30 years, my psychiatrist gave me an Rx for Naltrexone. I started on 12/27/10 with 25mg for 3 days and then went to 50mg. I have had absolutely no side effects. I haven't wanted to drink since that day. I'm able to go to bars with other people drinking and it doesn't bother me. It's like a miracle to me.....why didn't I get this sooner? I know I'm very lucky, as I've heard from many people that it has not worked for them. From research I've found it appears to help women more than men, although they don't know exactly why. There is also a "gene" factor involved in why this drug works for some people and not others. But I think everyone should at least try this medication. You may be one of the ones it works for. I wish it worked for everyone like it does for me. I definately know the pain of alcoholism. I have a whole new life ahead of me.Read More Read Less
