What in the WORLD is going on, here? After 12 years of drinking virtually every day (moderate to extreme amounts) and desperately wanting to quit, I finally made it in to see my GP. I am the worlds most sinister alcoholic. No DUI, no legal problems, generally stayed out of embarrassing situations, successful professional and a complete and total drunk. Drink in the mornings, throughout the day a...

Tried to stop drinking on my own with no success. Ask Doctor for help, given 50mg Naltrexone this immediately took away the cravings and desire to drink.

Waited a year before writing a review to be sure I gave an accurate depiction. Heavy daily drinking for 20+ years. Drank to get smashed and could easily go through a 12pk. Doc wanted me on antibuse plus lithium (or something like that) for the withdrawals. Did my homework online and found out about Naltrexone. I pitched it to my Doc and he wrote a scrip. I knew it wasn't gonna work. No way. You get a month's supply and a prayer. Taking it for the 1st time was THE hardest thing I've ever had to do mentally. I didn't want to let go of my passion. The demons were wrestling me. But I just banged the pill down with a glass of water. It was evening time and the time of day where I'm usually well on my way to wastedville. I had 6 tall boys in the fridge at the ready. But I waited an hour to see if this pill made me feel any different. The time went by and the magic happened. NOTHING. No euphoria I was expecting this pill to create, no substitute feelings causing me to not want to drink. No crave, no wants. I opened the fridge, looked at those tall boys and thought to myself well that was a waste of $7. I didn't want one! I didn't get pukey thoughts or feelings either if I thought about drinking one. I didn't want to. I just didn't need to! I can't explain it. No vertigo or weird twitch in my face. I took 1 pill a day for 4 weeks. I probably coulda gone 2 weeks, but decided to be "safer". That was November 25, 2018. It's January 2020 now and I haven't had a drink since. Still no crave. Ya I miss it at times, but I'm not missing the drinking, I'm missing the shenanigans my friends and I used to do. But I don't need booze for that; and you'd be amazed at what you can get into while sober. You get to find out who your friends really are/aren't. My quality of life with my wife & kids is great now compared to divorce talks I used to have. I never went to AA or therapy. Don't need it. People always ask me is there a magic bullet?? I say yes. Yes there is. Put it on a billboard.Read More Read Less

The oral route is fraught with too many distractions and temptations. For example, this pill has a very short half-life; you can start drinking again a few hours after ingesting. A far better approach is the monthly shot given by a nurse. It is more expensive, but a grant may be available. In applying for the grant it may occur to you that you will likely get a better chance at the grant by padding your alcoholism with opioid abuse, but can such a add-on trouble you later or this all confidential. Regardless, the shot far exceeds any AA program or pill. It has changed my life. The pill, not so much.Read More Read Less

This medication does NOT reduce cravings. Go google "does naltrexone reduce alcohol cravings" if you don't believe me. Many reviews here claim it does, it does NOT.

After a week of detoxing safely after drinking heavily and in and out of the hospital over 200 times in 5 years (only 31 years old), I started taking 50 mg a day in the morning and have had no desire of drinking. This plus s good aa group and sponsor has helped me obtain sobriety. Highly recommend!!

I had a habit of drinking in the late afternoon daily, and after being prescribed this, I have no interest in drinking. I have had a few drinks since I started it a month ago, but I don’t get any enjoyment out of the experience and am amazed that I have no desire to drink.

This is a very powerful drug. To start off, I am a 6â??0â? 180lb male. I was prescribed the 50mg once daily, however since I have been hospitalized for other prescription medicines due to reactions I was hesitant. I started on 25mg instead. This hit me like a truck, I was extremely tired and in a fog. I felt like a zombie. I took it down to 12.5mg, still was extremely tired and out of it. After almost giving up I went down to 6mg, which is an eighth of a pill. I found this to be the right amount for me. The first few days I had a little headache, minor stomach pain and was a little tired but this all has passed. This drug did give me the ability to stop after one drink. It makes it easier to â??take it or leave itâ? when it comes to alcohol. I would recommend at least trying it and experimenting with which dose works best for you.Read More Read Less

So I started on this a week before Thanksgiving at 50mg's. The first three days were rough, upset stomach and nausea. Since then I don't feel any different. I'm on it for weight loss and to be honest I'm eating like I was before, it hasn't curbed any cravings or changed my thought process regarding sweets or sugar. I have an appt with the doctor on the 11th., to check in with her. I see that other people have lower dosages, I'm wondering if my Naltrexone is different then yours/theirs? Thanks.Read More Read Less

I've struggled with alcohol all of my adult life and drink to ward off stress from my legal job and because I get bored on weekends. I have quit drinking several times for a month or two but always seem to go back wanting to get rid of my stress or fill my days off drinking. I am at the point now where my health is failing and I don't feel good unless I am drinking so every day my stomach is in horrible condition until I get out of work and drink. For the past month I haven't enjoyed drinking, just NEEDED it to feel better so I am at the point of no return. This morning I went back on Naltrexone and finally feel like I have some hope! it worked before so now I am going to try it again and keep up with the therapy. Day 1 feels better than I have in months and full of hope. Praying Naltrexone will keep me away from excessive alcohol. I've woken up some mornings not wanting to look at how much of the half gallon of vodka I had drank. When it is more than half way gone I feel awful about drinking so much. I'm not sure if I will have a drink when I get home today but am optimistic it will either be zero or one or two and taper off eventually.Read More Read Less

A naltrexone treatment study by Anton et al., released by the National Institutes of Health in February 2008 and published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, has shown that alcoholics having a certain variant of the opioid receptor gene (G polymorphism of SNP Rs1799971 in the gene OPRM1), known as Asp40, demonstrated strong response to naltrexone and were far more likely to experience success at cutting back or discontinuing their alcohol intake altogether, while for those lacking the gene variant, naltrexone appeared to be no different from placebo. This was from a wiki article on naltrexone... It seems to work very well for those of us with the gene variant... Certainly worth a try...Read More Read Less

I'm giving this a low rating because I haven't been on it that long. I started to take this on Saturday 9/22/2018. I feel like a lot is happening with taking this. One my stomach is upset, I feel nervous and a bit sweaty. It definitely has a sedative side effect. I don't feel any sugar cravings, which is why I'm on this in the first place, which is the greatest thing to happen to me!! I'm just wondering if the side effects will wear off? Thanks.

I've was a functioning alcoholic for 15 years. I moved up in my career while day drinking and would consume about a half a fifth to a fifth of vodka a night. I would tell people I was an alcoholic, but they wouldn't believe me. I had no problem being one for the first 10 years, but I more and more became concerned about dying young because of it. I did not think it was possible to quit until I started taking Naltrexone paired with Wellburtrin to treat my depression/anxiety. Within a week I went from day/night drinking to maybe one drink a day. Within 3 months I was down to one drink a week and now at a year I'm not drinking at all. This success has also lead me to quitting my marijuana/cigarette dependency (daily smoker for 27 years), as I feel like if I can quit drinking I can also quit smoking. I've been a non smoker of cigarettes for a year now and I've gone from smoking an ounce of flower form marijuana every two weeks to only taking one vaporizer drag a day. I've also lost 30lbs without exercise and my blood pressure has gone from pre-high blood pressure to ideal. Life couldn't be better and I wish I had learned about Naltrexone/sinclair method sooner. Started this in rehab. Drank 30 years, hard drinker last 10 years, blackout drunk at least four times a week. Zero cravings over the last six weeks. It is almost too good to be true. Anxiety level is a little higher than usual but I am not sure if that is just from adjusting to life back in the real world

Naltrexone has changed my life. I wish I would have known about it years ago. It would have prevented a lot of problems in my life from drinking too much. Now, I no longer have cravings and don't even care if I never drink again.

This is my second attempt with Nal, the first time I tried the Sinclair method for a year and a half, I stopped taking it because i found I felt neither highs or lows, just even all the time, yes that should be great but in life we need to feel something thats why we have endorphin's, Nal seemed to block enjoyment from everything including exercise and food, so to rebel against that feeling I drank more and more and became a heavier drinker..rather then embracing what it was trying to achieve I rebelled against it.. so if you don't do that.. Nal will work over time..i noticed a lot of reviews are from people who have only been on the drug a short time, I just wanted to point out Nal has a honeymoon period where you wont feel like drinking to the point of indifference, its awesome! and from my experience and research unfortunately as the body gets used to the drug it does not last, the habit tends to muscle over the indifference in time..however don't give up on it...perseverance is key, this drug will stop the high of drinking, essentially take out all the fun..eventually this translates to, why drink! If you do drink you'll also maintain control to a point as though sober, this can also be dangerous as you might drink more thinking your ok but your not. Nal is designed to break the reward your brain receives from drinking so for the brain to relearn or rewire it will need time to break the cycle, in conclusion...worth a try guys..anything is worth a try to get rid of this monkey on our backs.Read More Read Less
