Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

Is it true that you can not take any calcium supplements while taking Synthroid?

Originally I was on the generic version of this medication, but it was causing my hair to fall out. My doctor swtiched me to Synthroid and I'm very happy with it. My hair is fine and my thyroid levels seem to be getting back to normal.

I have been diagnosed with hpyothyroidism since 2002 from a routine employment health program. I mentioned this to my VA dotors and showed them the lab analysis results. They did absolutely nothing. In February 2008, I felt lousy and went to a VA outreach clinic where the doctor revealed that my thyroid was underactive. At that point, he perscribed to me this medication. At first I began to feel better but I was still tired. I visited my doctor for a routine follow up but she never ordered any blood work. Shortly there after, I ended up at the VA ER with typical heart attack and/or stroke symptoms. Both times my TSH was out of whack. The second time, they finally increased my dosage. The medication never did work so I requested that my medication be changed. My doctor reluctantly did change my medication. The new medication still isn't working. I have since requested a new doctor, one that will work with me to help me feel the way I use to. As I was reading, I may also have an adrenal gland issue which will make it impossible for the medication to work properly. I am not giving the medication a bad rap yet. I am giving my doctor who was unwilling to work with me or send me to a specialist to figure out the best way to address my illness.Read More Read Less

I'm 19 and I have been on ever increasing doses of this medication for the past two years. I still don't feel like I have any energy, I'm overweight and can't lose weight, I am constantly nausious, have muscle and joint pain, depression, frequently irregular periods, and diarrhea. I'm also anemic and iron supplements dont mix well with thyroid medications so that is also a struggle. This disorder makes me feel helpless.

I had thyroid cancer in2005, and I131 radiation. I was on synthroid for a several years prior to surgery. I have had rapid heart rate, profuse sweating, and tiredness. My Dr. will not prescribe generic for synthroid. I take 150mcg -IN THE MORNING ON AN EMPTY STOMACHE - 1HR. BEFORE EATING. My endocrinologist and cancer Doc. both recommend it to be taken that way. It works inspite of the side effects. The TSH level is suppressed adaquately to stop new cancer growth.

I started this drug only 2 months ago (50mcg) I see no change but headache a nausea similar to stomach flu sometimes, gain weight too and leg cramping specially at night. Not happy with it. I will consult with another doctor or specialist on thyroid problems.

The only symptom I ever experienced was hot flashes, and my doctor thought they were early. So, he checked my thyroid levels and sent me to a specialist who declared my thyroid had disintegrated. I have been taking the Citoloparam version of thyroid medicine, for about 6 years, but I still have the hot flashes (they could be due to age by now)....anyway, I have gained about 50 pounds in the last 8 years, even though I exercise....I also quit smoking during this time period, so I am just very unsure about whether or not the synthroid has ever really done anything! I am so puzzled and surprised there are no newer, more effective treatments for these conditions!Read More Read Less

Diagnosed with hyperthroidism in 1996, gained a ton of weight (80 lbs in 3 months)during initial treatment(can't lose even half of what was gained). Two doses of I131 to kill thyroid, been on Synthroid since 1998. Dosage has changed a couple of times have been on 175ugrams for 5 years now, still have my ups and downs on how I feel so I pretty much deal with it because the risk of not taking it are much greater then the downs. T3, T4, and TSH levels remain excellent so currently no need for another adjustment in meds. Losing the weight is difficult still to this day but still trying. For those dealing with the treatment for thyroid problems things will get better it just takes time. Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 24 years ago. I have taken Synthroid in different strengths over the years. I currently take 200mcg daily. It makes a huge difference in your life if you are on the correct dosage. It can take several months if not longer to find the right dosage for some people but the benefits will be worth it.
