Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

I've been taking synthroid for 9 years (diagnosed at 5, currently 14 yrs old) and despite having to increase my dosage every few years, it has worked well for me. I do find that I have most of the typical side effects of weight issues (even though I had weight problems LONG before I was diagnosed), acute insomnia (it's controlable but it's hard to get back to a normal time once I'm off) along with intense mood swings if I forget to take it for a few days, fatigue during the day if I take my current dosage (112mcg) in the morning instead of at night and my hair falling out (most noticeabley when I wash it). But those are just typical side effects... at least from what I've read/researched. So I don't believe that I don't have anything to worry about for now. :]Read More Read Less

My levels were borderline so my doctor started me on this medication. I have been taking it around 6 months now. I have gained weight over this time but my doctor said it could not be from the medication. I go to the gym and am eating right so I don't know what it can be from. I am very frustrated and just want to stop taking the medication but I don't want to gain more weight from not having it if that was not the cause. CONFUSED!!!!

I'm very pleased with my experience with Synthroid. I am however having trouble with my ankles swelling. Is this a side effect?

For 7 years I had a goiter and dr told me it was just "mildly enlarged, your blood levels are fine, don't worry about it". I went to see an endo 6 months ago and was diagnosed w/hashimoto's. I've been on 50 mcg Synth for several months now and the goiter continues to grow. I had not had hypo symptoms before taking it, and none now, I have no idea why I am taking this, it's obviously not working, and am thinking of going to see a naturalist.

I started to take synthoid over 7 years ago. My weight has fluctuated up and down over the years. It mainly changes when my dosage needed to be increased. I can usually tell when my dosage needs increasing because my finger nails become brittle, hair starts falling out, and tiredness increases. I started with the lightest dose. Doctor insists my TSH is tested every 6 months and has adjusted dosage over time. Doctor insists that generics are not used, only name brand. It has helped me with symptoms. Read More Read Less

After taking the generic version of Synthroid, I have lost a lot of hair, have depression & anxiety, and a loss of appetite. After calling the pharmacist about the side effects, he said to get off of the meds immediately! I have suffered with the medication for 5 months. I am seeing a new endocrinologist and hope to find relief.

A year and a half ago I began getting really tired and started falling asleep on the couch at 6PM every night. My doctor said my THS was off but not by much. I then began losing my hair and I got very depressed, my family thought I was going insane. I have never had any signs or symptoms of depression before. My doctor finally put me on syntroid and changed my dose around until my TSH was stable. Ever since I have never really got my full amount of energy back. I am not falling asleep all the time but I never feel like I have the energy to do anything. My TSH has been consistent so I just have continued to take the synthroid. My hair has never went back to normal, In the last 2 years I have only had my hair trimmed a few times and my hair is 2-3 inches shorter! My mood got better, but looking back I realize it hasnt gone back to normal. I never get excited about anything anymore. With the stress of a new job I feel into a severe depression and had to start taking an anti-depressant. My sex drive is completely diminished and I am 24 years old! Recently my fiance broke up with me due to my depressed mood and non-existant sex drive. It took going to a counselor to realize maybe all of these symptoms are due to my medication. I have mentioned them to my doctor before but since my TSH was normal she wasn't worried. I feel like I should have done my research soon becuase this drug was impacting my life more than I realized. I felt bad on Synthroid for over 25 years. My endocrinologist ingored my complaints and ignored my very low Free T3. I obtained copies of my old lab reports & found that my Free T3 was always very low the few times it was tested. Synthroid is a t4 only thyroid replacment hormone. On it your Free T3 can get very low. There are other thyroid hormone meds. Many doctors will use scare tactics to keep you from insisting on a differnt meds. Don't fall for it! I now use Armour Thyroid and feel so much better!Good luck.Read More Read Less

I have just begun taking this medication and cannot give any substantial review. I first got mono two years ago after a trip to France. It was an awful illness. I felt as if I was going to pass out after simple tasks like washing the dishes. A year later I still was not feeling well. My doctor tested me for diabetes and iron deficiency among other things. A few months later, my symptoms worsened. My mono had reactivated itself. Not only that, but a new EBV receptor had opened up. I am only 18 and have been dealing with this for three years now. I am tired all the time, I have lost half of my hair, and have gained 20 pounds. Other 18 year olds are full of energy and love to do all sorts of physical activities. I would rather sleep. I finally switched doctors because I was tired of being told that I was fine when I knew that I was not. When my doctor first put me on this medication, the very first thing he told me was that I could not take the generic. He said that the generic brand of this medication has been known to cause many side effects. After reading most of the comments on here, I have found that many people who have had side effects with this drug are taking the generic version. As a side note, some drugs do not work for some people. One has to make the decision of whether the side effects are bareable enough. I have been tired and worn out for three years now. I am willing to deal with some minor side effects just so I can have some energy.Read More Read Less

I am thinking it may be too soon for me to tell any real results, I have been on this for a little over two months, with in the first month, the burning in my muscles went away, my hair loss has lessened, I am not as tired, BUT I am gaining weight! I talked to the Endo about this, but seeing I have only gained about five pounds, he doesn't feel it's the Synthroid! I am doing everything the same and I am definetly not wanting to gain as much as some people I have read on here! Is there anyone out there who has had good results with the Synthroid/including weightloss? And how long before this darn pill kicks in?Read More Read Less

I was prescribed synthetic Synthroid for nodules approx. 5 months ago. Not only was it difficult to take on a schedule (no eating for an hour afterward), but I also lost quite a bit of hair as well. I guess the hair loss was the worst part of it because it made me anxious and depressed.

I no longer get as tired or feel deprived of air as before but have IBS and many other side effects. I recently discovered another side effect that isn't listed-urgency to urinate-which I have had for some time. I now suspect it is caused by the generic synthroid because my son who recently began taking it began having the same problem after a few pills.

I started taking the generic form of Synthroid a few months ago for nodules. I was anxious, depressed, and my hair (which has always been thick) started falling out. I called the doctor and he said "take vitamins" which of course did nothing. I called my pharmacist with the symptoms and he said to stop it NOW. I have an appt. with another endocrinologist in a few weeks and hope to have better luck.
