Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

I've been on this for over 10yrs for having my thyroids taken out due to cancer. works really good. The only thing is if I forget to take it I can really tell I get very tired. And I've notice the mood changes with me.

This has been a life-altering drug for me. For years and years, I had an almost constant lack of energy and slogged my way through every single day. It was so depressing. Doctors did not believe I had a thyroid problem because I was in the low-normal range, and nothing else seemed to be medically wrong. After seeking out solutions for years from psychoanalysis to acupuncture, a close friend with a thyroid condition gave me a book, and I saw that I had 18 of 25 symptoms of an underactive thyroid. I went back to my doctor and...well...insisted that she let me try a treatment for hypothyroidism (I don't blame her for her caution--unnecessary Synthroid is dangerous). After about a month and a half, I started noticing a big difference in my energy level. After three months I was tested and my level was right at dead-center normal. In fact, I was traveling so I asked a different doctor to do my thyroid test, and when he saw the results said, "whatever you're doing is perfect." Over the years, I went up slightly in dose (from 25mg/day to 37.5mg/day--one and a half pills), but after a while it felt like too much and I went back to the original dose. Once I went off it for about half a year (I had no health insurance and couldn't afford the required liver tests every three months), and after about 6-8 weeks I started to feel exhausted all the time again. By the way, I had mixed results from generics with this drug--one brand gave me palpitations--so I've stuck with Synthroid and it's been fine indeed for the past decade. Read More Read Less

I started on a generic and couldn't stabilize so I switched to the name brand and the problem is not different. 25 mcg may not sound like much of a difference, but when 50 mcg leaves me hypothyroid, and 75 mcg takes me to hyperthyroid it's a huge difference. I've been told that every person prefers a different TSH level inside the parameters of 'normal', but the drug dosages are so high that there's no way to properly regulate it. I'd like to strongly suggest to the maker that you consider 1-5 mcg doses for those of us who would like to live a normal life. Thank you!Read More Read Less

I don't know if I am taking the right strength of medication. My cholesterol is high and my energy is low. My weight increase is now a problem. I'm 40 lbs overweight. I never had a weight problem until a few years before I was diagnosed with low thyroid.

I've been taking Synthroid 75mcg. for about 5 years now and have never felt better in my life. I was hyperthyroid for many year until it almost took my life. I had the radio active iodine treatment to put me into hypothyroidism. I have gained weight (a lot for short me) but that's the least of the problems, uncomfortable but bearable. My heart dosen't beat out of sink anymore and I'm able to sleep now. I am very happy taking my Synthroid. No more mood swings, and I feel like a decent humanbeing now. (besides being heavy)Read More Read Less

I started this just yesterday. However, for everyone who's having heart palpitations and feeling uneasy and all that scary sounding stuff, it seems to me that those are symptoms of hyperthyroidism. (Look them up if you don't believe me) So for those who are looking into this treatment plan just know that with a thyroid problem you have to be completely honest with your doctor and make sure that they listen and if they don't, find a new one! The thyroid affects so much of your body; your heart, your body temperature, your metabolism, your brain etc. It's VERY important to realize that this drug is NOT supposed to help you with weight and if it makes you gain it's probably because you now have a healthy metabolism (congratulations it's slow like mine!) All this means is you have to work to keep the weight down now and making your metabolism faster. For everyone looking into thyroid medicine also remember that your body is not the exact same as anyone and you will never know how it makes you feel until you try it. Specially if it's your doctor's first choice of treatment.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this drug and my doctor thought it would speed up my metabolism....my thyroid levels were off. She has me on 75 and I'm taking it in the morning on an empty stomach. I have noticed my hair coming out and I'm actually startled at the rate of hair loss! My hair brush is filled with hair with just a light brushing. I have gained weight and gotten bloated due to prednisone, so I'm terrified of gaining weight on top of going bald. I see some lose weight and others GAIN!!!! What determines the direction it takes you? I have a lot of swelling due to water retention....any suggestions?Read More Read Less
