Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

After one or two weeks of being on Synthroid I started noticing a real increase (about 15-20 per day) in the PVC's that my heart was doing. I eventually wound up in the emergency room. The ER doctor told me to stop the Synthroid immediately. It's been 4 days since stopping the Synthroid and the PVC's have dropped to 2 or 3 per day. Will never touch that stuff again!

I am a healthy 69-yr-old female and started on levothyroxine 9-10-2010. Suffered severe leg cramps, always fatigued, weight gain, hair loss etc. Dr. refused to put me on armour thyroid, told me levo was the only one for throid problems. I took action and found another doctor, now on armour thyroid and doing amazingly better. Take charge of your own body if you aren't getting positive results with your doctor now. You owe it to yourself.

My Dr insisted I get real Synthroid, Not Generic. He said the generics had bad reports. Anything else I gor from hiom was always generic. When i took the generic, i developed horrible tingling & throbbing in my hands - the new dr didn'tthink there was anything wrong w/ me -coming from a family w a history of MS (that's a symptom)I stopped taking the Levothyroxin & went back to the name brand. No more numbness or tingling. it is worth the extra $$

Had Graves disease. Received radioactive iodine treatment. Went on synthroid. Long time to get my TSH and other test within normal ranges. Started at 50mcg.in 1995 and now on 137 mcg.Now get tested once a year. Lots of trouble when medicine needs changing. I have to be sure and make the Dr. tell me my TSH level. When it is too low (fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, weigh gain) i know my TSH is too high in numbers. I feel best when my TSH is about 2.0 to 3.5. Anything over 5 and my (hair comes out, blood pressure goes up, fatigue, sleepy, etc.). If I get too much synthroid I feel hot, anxious ,can't sleep. I have to be on top of how I feel and communicate it to my Doctor. Everyone's levels are different. Read More Read Less

To all who don't like the drug, you need to find a Dtr. who specializes in hormone balancing. I had a thyroidectomy in 1993 & am still NOT BALANCED. I'm working very hard w/ my other meds, but too many docs put ppl. on this med w/out looking at other hormone levels, regardless of age. Get your T3 AND T4 checked. It all needs to be looked at as a big package. If your MD won't listen to you, go find one who will!!!!!

I have been on this medicine for 5 years and can't get through the doctors heads to change me. I have pain and tingling in my arms and legs, my body is just weak and I am always cold and tired. I now have infertility and have entered menopause at 35. I have severe mood swings and have gained so much weight. I hate this medicine it's slowly taking my life away. But mostly I hate the doctors who just look at you like you don't know what you're feeling and dismiss you.

I have been on this medication for 4 months and have gained 22 lbs and my stomach is so bloated.... that I look like I am pregnant! The doctors do not think that the medicine is causing weight gain but they have agreed to stop this med for a month or so to see if if it is causing the weight gain. Also, I never felt any increase to my low energy levels. I feel worse than I did before taking this medicine. After reading the reviews with rapid weight gain, I am hoping that my weight will return to normal after stopping this med. I have even less energy now that I am carrying around an extra 20lbs! I have also been put on BP medicine since taking this. I will look into natural remedies if necessary. Read More Read Less

As a registered nurse who knows very well the symptoms of hypothyroidism, I presented to my physician with increasing fatigue, prolonged and irregular menstrual cycle, weight gain, achy joints, and an occasional breakout of hives. Just based on symptoms I knew I had Hashimotos disease. I have only recently started the medication but the very first day I took it, I felt a slight "kick" about 2 hours after ingesting it. That kick was the energy that I have been lacking for months. I find it interesting that many of the reviewers gained weight since that isn't a side effect of synthroid, it is a side effect of hypothyroidism. I did my due diligence during the week I waited for all of my results by looking up side effects, whether I should take generic or brand, what should I change about my diet, etc. I have seen patients in myxedemic comas and it is life threatening, so I will not ever just stop taking this medication abruptly. I have to take thyroid medication for the rest of my life so if I have to suffer through some slight hair loss, then so be it (that hasn't happened as yet but I also lost hair before being diagnosed). The single most important thing to me is feeling good and that means having regular thyroid levels checked including antibodies since my initial antibody test was in the thousands. I know my MD is going to have to adjust my meds over the course of the next six months but I'd much rather treat it than end up with the side effects of untreated thyroiditis, including a goiter. I have been taking levothyroxine for 6 months and have experienced severe rashes itchy scalp and a shaking feeling. I have put on weight and have no control over it. I have told my dr. but he doesn't think it is the levothyroxine. I would like to stop taking this drug but don't know if I should.

My Mother is taking it and says it put her in to a depression. Her Dr. said she has to stay on it. Stopping it will cause serious side effects. Is this true? She has no thyroid problems that she knnows. She's 91.Thank you, she is beside herself.

I had my thyroid removed when I was 12 ...cancer...I was on Cytomel (T3 only drug) this is a steroid/fat burning drug. My weight was under control but I felt terrible and I was on a roller coaster ride..it is a fast acting drug....new doctor recommended synthroid (T4 only drug) for a year or so I felt fine I think it was because I still had the muscle tone from the previous T3 drug in my system as well as the T4. Been on synthroid for 8 years +/- it is ruining my life..i am depressed, I have gained 50 punds I used to be very active I can not even go up steps I am week....shortness in breath...my bones are hurting all the time... some of them have become deformed on my hands. I am moody I will be asking for Armour medicine (T3 and T4 combined) on Monday or a new Doctor that will listen. This one says my tsh is in range so everything is ok...well...its not. The reason I am asking for Armour drug is because the new england journal of med has tested drugs with both t3 and t4 and found they are much more effective. if there is anyone else out there that has anything to add about a different drug...please adviseRead More Read Less
