Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

My thyroid was removed four months ago and I was put on this medication. I take 100 mcg every day and feel very energetic.

Has worked well - dosage has been decreased over the 20 years or so that I have been taking it. My questions is whether in order to reduce costs, I should take a generic. My current doctor and previous doctors and pharmacists recommended that I should not take a generic. I take 88mcg. Just wanted your advise. Morley

On Synthroid after Throid cancer, then Hashimotos Thyroiditis, then yrs later have Graves Dx. Cancer w/ subtotal thyroidectomy, then radiation, plus yrs later Radioactive iodine twice. Then put on Synthroid. Used other compounded Rx but they ran low then out at factory, put back on Synthroid. Doc started me at 0.200 ug for over ten yrs, then changes in labs led to me going gradually down, now on 0.125ug (mcg). Found it is necessary to take Rx! If not I sleep all day, terribly fatigued, cannot function. With Rx I gained weight because of Graves Dx. I also developed AMD and Thyroid Eye Dx , but NOT from Rx. Without this Rx I could not function.Read More Read Less

Was on Levoxyl successfully for years, but was switched to generic levothyroxine due to Levoxyl recall. After 6 weeks on generic I was having moderate brain fog (inability to concentrate/reading comprehension, memory problems, irritability, anxiety and hot/cold flashes and sweats, etc. Got my MD and insurance to RX me onto Synthroid. OMG! I feel awful. My brain hurts and feels like it is being squeezed/choked, feel nervous and angry for no or little reason. Eyes hurt. Thyroid hurts. Told I can't have a Thyroid test for 2 months due to insurance. I'm going to put myself back on the generic which, though not as good as my Levoxyl is not as bad as the Synthroid in my case. Good luck All.Read More Read Less

I was on this for over 6 years. I started off at a fairly normal weight now I am over 300lbs. I have begged the dr's over the years put me on something else. THe weight gain, depression, the havoc it is doing to my body the meds were'nt helping. no one listened. All my hormones are unbalanced and I went into pre--menopause at 26. FSH over 80 while my growth hormone is extremely low under 40. They just kept raising my dose, I don't even like to go outside now. I had 1 dr listen to me this past yr. He said the synthroid wasn't even metabolizing in my body, that it was useless. I was taken off and put on cytomel (t3 only) not any better. I am wondering if there will ever be a silver lining. medication is supposed to reduce fatigue and sleepiness and increase concentration. We have found the opposite to be true.

Celiac and gluten intolerance patients beware! Synthroid has gluten it. I have celiac/gluten intolerance and I have been gluten free for over 10 years and was switched to synthroid recently. Levoxyl has been recalled (which I have been on for over 8 years and never had a problem)and I was switched to Synthroid. After 2 months, I was so extremely sick with: muscle inflammation all over body, rapid heart beat, heart palpitations, headaches, intestines were all messed up, I felt like I had the flu all the time. Now my doctor has me on a "pure" thyroid medication made by a local compounding lab, that has no dyes or gluten and with in 4 days I felt like night and day different. Every day now I am feeling better. I had been poisoning my body and didn't even know it!Read More Read Less

I have been on this medication for nearly 40 years, but 10 years ago I developed A-Fib which I believe is directly attributed to taking too much of the medicine. I am going to quit taking this as of now! I caution anyone to please watch your blood work and if it's too high, get off the meds quickly. It makes me itch and my hair breaks off. Also please be careful if you are dieting because some doctors will give you this medicine to lose weight and that is a big mistake. It can really mess with your heart. Good luck everyone.Read More Read Less

Once I started taking this drug I sweat alot, the temp. doesn't even have to be hot. My face looks like a beet and glossy from sweat, even when others say it's just comfortable. Is this common?

I have taken Synthroid for past 10 years and it has worked miracles for me. I was first put on 25ug of Synthroid when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism and since then I have regained vitality, health and well-being. My TSH, T4, T4 free levels are normal. However I have had several dose adjustments going from 25 to 50 to 75 to 100ug, which is what I am at right now. It seems like I have Hashimoto Throiditis and my thyroid glands are giving up gradually. I have been taking other medications as well (not together though) and haven't noticed any adverse reactions. I have made following observations though: 1. Taking it early morning in empty stomach with full glass of water is more effective. 2. Don't take it with other medications. Wait at least 1hr. 3. The generic substitute for Synthroid, Levothyroxine doesn't work the same way as Synthroid although FDA claims they are bio-equivalent. Various makes of Thyroxine have different effectiveness, so they cannot be substituted for same dosage. Dosage need to be titrated by using TSH, T4 tests and once set don't change the brand name. 4. Also I have found although your TSH and T4 levels are fine, you might not feel everything is right if you switch to different brand.Read More Read Less

WARNING: This medication contains gluten! I also have RA, and every time I've been put on Synthroid (usually when a thyroid drug I was taking was discontinued) I've had RA flare-ups. My insurance put me on Synthroid when Levoxyl was discontinued. I called my doctor after experiencing severe pain and arthritis symptoms. She told me Synthroid is her least favorite drug, because it's loaded with fillers. I asked, "Does it possibly contain gluten?" (to which I have an allergy). She advised me that gluten is used as one of the fillers. I find it ludicrous that the makers of medications do not label them as containing gluten, when so many people suffer with Celiac or gluten sensitivities - especially people with autoimmune thyroid conditions.Read More Read Less
