I have been on Omeprazole for 6 years. When symptoms of fatigue, serious leg pain, headaches, constant burping, gas and feeling like I had to throw up started happening, I went to my doctor of 27 years, explained what was happening and was met with silence. I have had to do research on my own; that's why I'm here. My latest blood work shows that for the first time in my life, I am Vit. D deficient...
I increased my dosage of Omeprazole from 20MG to 40MG a few years back. It's a very effective medication in terms of controlling GERD. However the issue I've been having with it is that it causes a noticeable degree of fatigue and it has lowered both my Vitamin D and Vitamin B-12 levels. I am currently taking supplements to increase my levels of those vitamins

I was given pantopranzole for erosive gastritis and that caused nausea so I I thought I'd try 10mg omeprazole.
A week of taking it my stomach was on fire and my appetite gone, I also noticed I was very dizzy and stiff neck along with severe anxiety, slight headache too. Of course everyones different. But if you're sensitive to medications anyway start low and see how you get on

Recommended by primary care physician for chronic COUGH.
Symptom(s): Occasional but nearly daily cough, often with phlegm production. Cough was more likely to occur after laying down. Duration of condition: several months.
Apparently, acid-reflux condition does not always produce heartburn (a very rare occurrence for me). Was surprised the doctor recommended this acid reducing product. More surprised that it has eliminated about 90% of the coughing I was experiencing.

72-years-old doing yoga, enjoying active lifestyle when hit by a virus. Extreme nausea kept me from eating 5 days. Night sweats, constant headache, and felt like vomiting just thinking about food. Take pill in am with “Boost” supplement drink. After 1 week the nausea has diminished and am able to tolerate small meals. Will take this another month, at which time I’ll have surgery for skin cancer. It’s possible that feeling like I’ve been punched in the gut is emotional due to upcoming procedure. Will continue with med and hope to wean off soon. Read More Read Less

Went to a specialist and had a camera put down my throat and it was determined I had acid reflux. So I was told to take this twice a day for 6 weeks and then return back. Literally the second day I took this, I became constipated. Then my stool smelled funky and began to float when I could force a movement. It also made me super anxious and depressed. It did cure the acid reflux, but not worth it. My Dr's all swear that it doesn't cause these gi issues and now sent me to a gi specialist. I stopped taking it after two weeks and switched to a h2 blocker. Did that for a week and my issues persist and I'm losing weight while eating at a surplus. These drugs are not for everyone and have many short and long term side effects that are worse then the initial issue you had.Read More Read Less

I had a long term of radiation for prostate cancer which ended in July ‘20 and left me with no cancer and serious heartburn. I had to sit up in bed until the Tums kicked in (every night) before I could get to sleep. When I had constant pain in the middle of my chest, I decided to find some help. I found omeprazole. I’ve only been taking it for a few months and it has been a miracle. The first pill stopped the heartburn completely. By pill three the pain, which I diagnosed as acid damage, was gone. I have been taking it 4 on, 3 days off .. I have been taking Vit. b-complex for years, and since the cancer diagnosis 10,000 IU of Vit. D-3. No negative reactions, total self-treatment. I’m 77, the only prescriptions I take are 5mg daily resuvistatin and 5mg daily Cialis. Planning to stop and see how long it will last before I have to resume it. I’m a fan.Read More Read Less

I have been a frequent blood donor for 40 years and the omeprazole lowered my hemoglobin making me ineligible. I did not know that was a side effect of omeprazole. I stopped taking it 3 days before my scheduled donation and I passed.

I was taking another drug for MANY years that was working fine. Each year my GI doctor had to write in saying that I needed that particular drug. He did, and all was well. Then, he gave up his practice. Because my hospital had closed due to the building being damaged, the new GI doctor he suggested was well over an hour away. So I asked my Primary to take over my prescriptions until the hospital was rebuilt, reopened, a new GI doctor would come there. He said yes, but when Medicare said they needed a letter for my meds as an "exception" to their list of drugs, he chose not to write the letter, and to give me this instead. I immediately started to get SEVERE abdominal pain, and headaches. I thought it was just taking time for my body to adjust to this med, but it just kept making me sick. I ended up in bed crying day after day. I called my doctor for an appointment and his nurse called back and left the message that if I was in pain, I should call my pain doctor! I couldn't believe it! So, I stopped this drug. The pain went away, though I’m still getting the headaches, and my acid reflux is going crazy!
Today I came on line and read the side effects of this drug and there it was! Abdominal pain, headaches, and, if taking opioids, it could reverse its effects. I take morphine! And my pain went crazy while on this drug.
I HATE this drug. It put me in bed, in tears, from the pain. I won't take it ever again! But I NEED my dexilant!Read More Read Less

I took this for two months and the side effects were horrible. Felt like I was in a fog all day had anxiety, insomnia. If you start this medication it will give you rebound acid and it’s hell to get off of. Please research these PPI they are dangerous.

I went to the hospital in December after throwing up one morning and still feeling sick more than a week later. Doctors said I had gastritis and a UTI and gave me meds. I guess the meds helped with both conditions, but in January I was still suffering from nausea after eating. No matter what I ate, or how little of it I ate, or how slowly I ate, I’d feel really nauseous and full and the nausea would only go away after belching. I went back to the doctor for this and was prescribed omeprazole, 20mg once a day for 30 days. In the beginning it did help, but I guess recently I’ve been less satisfied. I am still feeling nauseous and belching after eating. The burps are not usually acidic, though, and I think that might be why omeprazole did not help with them. I think omeprazole might be inducing more gas, actually. I also feel the urge to pass bowel movements frequently, even though I do an enema every night (as I have a separate condition that affects my nerves) and know I am not constipated. My stomach in general just feels very different, like I can feel my food sitting inside it, and the nausea from it has also induced a fear of eating. I often have little to no appetite, even when I’ve barely eaten the entire day. Yesterday I had a funny taste in my mouth, which is something I’ve seen some others mention, but I’m not sure if it was related to the medicine or not as that was the only time it’s happened my entire time on omeprazole. I took my last pill this morning and am hoping my stomach returns to normal soon. I’ve dealt with deep belching before, but never this frequently, and only after eating large, greasy meals, not something small and simple like a BAGEL. I can say omeprazole did not affect me as horribly as some others, but I am still excited to be coming off of it. Hoping I can return to eating like normal soon. Read More Read Less

Prescribed for cough associated Gird. Did little to aid may have actually exacerbated things. Made me feel tired and generally unwell a recognised side effect of this medication. After 14 days I have abandoned this med with all its medium to long term significant side effects and started on Apple cider vinegar capsules 500mg 3 times a day on a full stomach...so far so good.

I experience acid reflux and tummy issues at times and can't find any over the counter medications that work effectively enough to relieve it.
Omeprazole works really well to alleviate these symptoms. It takes roughly a half hour to start taking effect. It works really well and lasts all day.
This type of medication is better to take only when symptoms occur. You don't have to take it every day to build up in your system. This way you won't get any of the reported side effects that some users experience.
It works great but I advise to use sparingly!Read More Read Less
