I have been taking Wegovy since the end of April 2023. Due to supply issues, I took 2-months worth of the .25 dose and then now 2-months worth of the .5 dose. I have one more dose of the .5ml pen left, but have put off taking it due to experiencing extreme side effects last week (the 2nd time this has happened). It feels like a really bad case of the flu, mixed with nausea, vertigo, a horrible headache, fatigue, and having a very hot, flushed face that I cannot cool down no matter what I do. I can’t stand for more than a few seconds at a time either. It’s seriously awful. I have been prescribed nausea medication and will still sometimes throw up out of nowhere. Mostly like acid reflux. I noticed that this has happened a day or two after taking my 6th or 7th shot of the SAME dose. It is almost unbearable. Also, it is really scary that these side effects can appear seemingly out of nowhere when other weeks I feel mostly fine (maybe not ever 100% but manageable). I think these side effects may also be corresponding with my period, but that’s just a theory. So, adding that into the mix is the cherry on top of what is a horrible experience.
Some weeks I feel less hungry than others, but it has never been consistent or gotten progressively “better” with each week. I already try to drink a ton of water, but have upped my water intake even more since starting the medication in hopes of helping avoid any potential side effects. I have also tried to incorporate more protein and veggies into my diet and stay away from really greasy foods or lots of sugar. Again, some days or weeks are better than others, but overall, I have made some decent improvements to my diet and still haven’t been able to lose much weight or keep off the little bit I have lost. When I’m not experiencing extreme fatigue or any other side effects, I am usually able to exercise 2-3 times a week. But if the fatigue creeps up on me? Forget about it. It will feel like I’ve been drugged.
Overall, I’m disappointed that the medication hasn’t worked the way I’ve heard it has for others. My doctor reminded me that not everyone experiences rapid weight loss in the first few months, but I guess I just assumed (or hoped) that’s what would happen. She feels that my progress is good enough/gradual and that if I can get my hands on the medication during these crazy shortages then I should try to push through. However, risking feeling like death 2-3 days every 6 weeks has me questioning if it’s worth it. I want to be the healthiest version of myself, but have never found it easy to lose weight without crash dieting. As I get older and my metabolism slows, it only becomes increasingly more difficult. I want to be heart healthy, have energy, and feel my best. So far, Wegovy has occasionally made me feel less hungry, but the anxiety and stress that comes with experiencing side effects and dealing with supply chain issues/coverage is a lot.
