Vilazodone has far fewer effects on my sexual functioning (desire for sex and time to orgasm) than Celexa. Sexually, I feel as I do when I'm not taking an anti-depressant. I experienced noticeable but not incapacitating stomach and intestinal discomfort when I started vilazodone and strongly recommend following the gradual dose introduction that is prescribed. I normally am a very hard to irritate type of person, but I have MDD so I tend to take it out on myself through bad habits. This medication however flipped the script for me and I find it very hard to not rip into everyone around me aggressively. I no longer feel sadness, just pointless rage. I’ve also lost interest in my hobbies, turning most of my days looking like a flowchart. Work< eat< sleep.
As with most ssri type of meds there’s a noticeable decline in sexual satisfaction. I’d say this one is in the worst case as erection is short lived and half mast, compared to at least keeping it up and never finishing.Read More Read Less

I have Bipolar 2 with anxiety and major depression.
Been on Seroquel for BP2 for over a year. Depression wasn't touched so NP put me on Vilazodone a week ago.
Diarrhea is the main side effect. My depression is ok, but anxiety has been through the roof.
I'm trying to give it a bit longer as some reviews have said it takes awhile. Only on 10 mg as most antidepressants are activating for my BP2. Will see what happens over the next week. May need to adjust one or the other meds. I have Buspar too but haven't taken it cause everything I've read says don't with Vilazodone. Read More Read Less

Have taken this medication for multiple years from 10, to 20 to 30 MG. Only after lowering my dose I realized how apathetic I was to life. Taking it at a high dose caused me to lose passion for all interests while simultaneously inducing every side effect listed on the prescription sheet.

At first this medicine made me like Linda blair just mean but after taking it for about three weeks now I’m in a routine I do what I have to do. I’m happy it’s great mom this stuff is like awesome 20 mg and it’s my sweet spot. I love it I’m not depressed. I get up in the morning. I never used to do that. I would lay in bed all day but now with this I’m up and I’m doing things and I’m glad I’m on it.

After 3 weeks, don't feel like it's having any positive effects on my mood at all. Makes me extremely fatigued, causes sexual issues, and had to get an anti-nausea medicine because of it. Only on a 10 MG dose so don't think moving up would help matters.

I've been on different medications, basically what my healthcare will cover. Since I retired in 2018, Viibryd was no longer covered. I tried two other meds, but they didn't have the same effect as Viibryd. I applied to Abbvie Assist, and have been able to get Viibryd free of charge.
I can definitely tell if I don't take it (which is very rare). I would say the main side effect is sexually. I don't get erect as fast as I used to (which could also be my age!), but once I do, I start to lose it within 5 minutes. Could be I start thinking about it too much, which makes it worse.
But this is definitely not as bad as Celexa. That made me basically sexually inept.
I also didn't realize there is a generic substitute, which I'm going to try since my insurance will cover that. Read More Read Less

After taking this prescription for one week I felt completely disassociated with reality, scared, not know who I was, and that anywhere I was I needed to leave. I reported this to my doctor who upped the dosage. Three days later I tried to kill myself. I was 49 at the time. I recommend this be used only under strict supervision. It was a near fatal prescription for me.

10 mg made me incredibly anxious, but 20 was the sweet spot for me. Tried going up to 40mg, but had lots of anxiety/inattentive symptoms, and was really restless. Went back to 20mg and all's well. I have SO much more energy and am able to really get back to things again. Still have some leftover anxiety to deal with, but that's not a side effect, just something else I deal with. No major side effects that I can think of.

I experienced a horrible adjustment period when I moved away from my old rural University to the new one in Washington DC. I had always lived in "slower paced" areas until I came to DC. DC has a quick, fast pace (mid-Atlantic and Northeast US as well) people are nice enough, but not too approachable due to working all the time and having to get from point A to point B ASAP. I had so much trouble adjusting, and needed to see a psychiatrist. I tried Prozac (okay), Lexapro/Celexa (zombification), and had them in combo with ADHD meds (Dexedrine), anxiolytics (Valium and Xanax) and one weekend, when I was in my condo feeling depressed a came across an article on this drug. Since Prozac gave me trouble climaxing and disinterest in sex really, I figured I'd give Viibryd a shot in combo with my other meds (the benzos are low doses) to try to treat the Anxiety/MDD. It was expensive compared to others, but I took the plunge and I gave it time. Started at 10mg for 2 weeks, went up to 20 for a week, but realized that 20 just gave me more side effects, and bumped down to 10mg (each person is different). It worked! I also saw a therapist (terminal level PhD) and the cocktail I was on worked. My PBM, OptumRx then was about to throw me under the bus. I got a letter saying "Sorry, but even though this medicine works, Prozac Lexapro, etc. will work just as good, so we're taking it off the formulary." I was able to get lots of samples from my GP, and I know basic chemistry and do a water titration method he showed me because this was ridiculously expensive. He said that no one uses this antidepressant, but if it works for me, he's glad to give me sample packs. Overall, things slowly changed for the better. I've gotten my CPA licensure and work at one of the big four accounting firms (soon for the government) and have made progress and am moving forward in my life. I think people need to research the drugs they are prescribed. Not just accept something that isn't working.Read More Read Less

Very vivid dreams and trouble sleeping while increasing to prescribed doseage of 40mg. Still trouble sleeping until I cut back to 30mg then it leveled out. However if you miss even one dose it can cause horrible dreams and/or hallucinations! Diarrhea is another problem in the first few months but gets a little better with continued use. I was prescribed this medication for postpartum depression, I'm still unsure if the benefits outweigh the side effects at this point.

DO NOT take this medication with Straterra (for ADD). Straterra makes the Viibryd work erratically in your body and causes severe bouts of Major Depression requiring hospitalization until they get your blood work back and see the medications interfering with each other.
