I get frequent upper respiratory infections and when my coughing interupts my sleep this is the only medicine that is effective at stopping the cough and allows me to rest. It starts working in like 15 minutes and allows for a cough-free night. I would suggest taking it during the day for the first time so you know how you will react to it. You MUST take it with at least one full glass of water or...

Have sinusitis and bronchitis...Tessalon works fairly well for about 4 hrs except it does nothing for my drippy nose and mucous in my throat. After 4 hours (when I take at night) the effectiveness is gone, and I am still wide awake. I wish it would make me drowsy, but it does not! I get to sleep around 3 a.m. I won't be taking it again.

I was diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia. I had an awful cough for about three weeks, bad enough to cause back problems (I have disc problems and the cough was exacerbating my herniations). I was coughing until I vomited. I took my first dose and while I still have a bit of that "full throat" feeling, the urge to cough has largely subsided. I haven't been able to use narcotics because I have kids to take care of at night and narcotics knock me out. This is a really good substitute for something like codeine. I was able to get my first good night's sleep in three weeks. I will use this again.Read More Read Less

My doctor gave me Tessalon Perles at 200 mg a piece. Within ten minutes of taking the first dose, I was vomiting. My doctor told me that the pharmacy discourages breaking it open and putting it in liquid, but she has told patients to do so. I did this, and still vomited. My cough is worse than ever and it did not help me in the least.

I frequently use this to stop bronchitis from setting in from a normal chest cold. Take 3 per day and it will stop the chest infection from progressing and eventually reverses. Takes about a week or so.

I used 100mg & did not try to double the dosage. The over the counter cough syrups were more effective for me. This did not help at all.

This medication has quieted my cough enough to make it thru the day and also allows me to sleep at night. I would recommend asking your doctor about it

Since I am allergic to Codeine and Dextro-methorphan for excessive coughing, this is my only other option, but an excellent one; having had bronchitis numerous times, this really works for me. I am both a patient and a nurse.

I found that when over the counter remedys stop working for an asthmatic cough, tessalon usually does the trick. If not, then it's on to Tussinex - a narcotic.

I've had a severe cough for going on two weeks. My doctor put me on Tessalon. After taking the first dose, I was still coughing just as bad as before. Took second dose 4 hours later. Still coughing. My husband has taken it before and it work fine for him. Don't know why it is not working for me.

This medicine has helped me a great deal, although not completely. Before receiving it, I had been living off of cough drops for six weeks, with cough syrup added the last three weeks. My cough, which I at first attributed to allergies and mild asthma, became extremely severe this past week after contracting some sort of cold/virus (i.e., severe loss of sleep and of work productivity, dry heaves with sore ribcage, annoying myself and everyone around me). The doctor ordered a chest x-ray Friday to rule out walking pneumonia and put me on antibiotics and generic Tessalon Perles, the latter at my request as suggested by my husband. There has been considerable improvement at home, although I worked Saturday and still needed to use cough drops to get through my shift. What I find is that the Tessalon Perles help, but not necessarily for the full 8 hours. I actually came on this site to try and see whether I could still take some cough syrup, but I see that YOU CANNOT TAKE OTHER COUGH MEDICINE when taking Tessalon Perles. Guess I'll call my doctor on Monday and see what I can do. In the meantime, I DO RECOMMEND this prescription medication to anyone who has had a very serious cough with little or no relief from regular over-the-counter remedies. (They look like mini-Vitamin E pills and are extremely easy to take, just swallow with a glass of water. DO NOT BREAK OR CHEW!) Hope you and I both feel better soon!Read More Read Less
