Red Yeast Rice works...I started Red Yeast Rice 6-7 years ago to lower my borderline Cholesterol. It worked and lowered my cholesterol for 1-2 years. BUT Warnings about having the same side effects as statins worried me and I stopped RYR and the cholesterol levels increased again. I never started anything else and cholesterol levels stayed up. Further researched proved that all of these statin-li...

I started taking RYR 900mg 9 days ago. I had to stop after experiencing the same symptoms which I had with Simvastatin. Flu like symptoms, headache, muscle ache, joint and pain in foot along with leg calf cramping. The brand was Doctor vitamin store .

I'd been prescribed a statin for my high cholesterol but I experienced erratic and scary pulse rates, so I stopped taking it. When I asked my regular medical Dr. about possible natural medications, he told me about Red Yeast Rice (1200 mg./per day) and CoQ-10 (300 mg./day)- which I took together. I've had no negative side effects and have been very happy with the results. Within 3 months, my readings have dropped from high to mid-normal range! I've been taking them for over a year.

I have taken RYR 1200mg daily for a month. My Dr. said it was ok to try since I can't take statins. I let time lapse between taking other medications and always took it with food. I started noticing muscle pain and difficulty walking after a month but didn't associate it with the RYR until I'd stopped taking it a couple of days then remembered reading it could present the same side effects as statins. I've been off for 2 weeks but still experiencing muscle pain in my leg. Also taking zetia with no problems.Read More Read Less

I've been taking LipiTonic by Karuna for several weeks. Don't know yet if it's affected my cholesterol levels but it has turned my stools black!! I can't find any reference to that side effect and am wondering if anyone else has had that experience?

My LDL cholesterol went up to 260 over a year ago, so I started taking 600 mg red yeast rice twice a day and within 2 mos it was down to 240. After 6 mos it came down to 199. I have had no side effects, but plan to cut back to one capsule a day when I get down to about 150 for LDL.I took this on the advice of my physician because I did not want to take a prescription statin drug. The only change I made to my diet was to switch to Benecol margarine with plant sterols instead of my regular brand. Read More Read Less

My cholesterol has always been really low, so I became alarmed when it shot up at an annual physical. My doctor said it's common and that I was just aging! I shared this with a neighbor who told me about Red Yeast Rice, which I bought at a health food store. Took it for 3 months, had another blood test, and my cholesterol went down 30 pts.

I took this for 3 months for high cholesterol. My cholesterol dropped 40 points was very pleased with that. Downside... I have had muscle spasms and uncontrollable twitching /jumping they call restless leg syndrome (guess they ran out of big words). They cannot find anything wrong with me now. They don't know whar causes this but I know it didn't start until I started taking red rice yeast. Coincidence maybe. If you try it and start noticing unusual muscle pains Stop! I stopped taking this about 1.5 years ago and the pain hasn't gone away Read More Read Less

WOW! HORRIBLE REACTION!! I took this Red Yeast Rice for over a year to lower cholesterol, may have helped a bit. BUT, I believe it is what caused my gallbladder to go haywire. Emergency surgery, was told I had a 1 in 3 chance of making it of surgery (I'm in fine health otherwise) gallbladder was septic and calcified--TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Prescribed by my MD.

I am a 54 yo female in excellent physical condition. Routine blood work showed a 100+ increase in total cholesterol. Triglycerides and LDL also went up. The change in bloods may be due to the stress of my husband's sudden death 1.5 years prior. I took a combination of red yeast rice and omega-3. Triglycerides and LDL remain high.

I have an extremely low tolerance to medications - had severe side effects with everything prescribed. Tried Red Yeast Rice store brand - not much success. Tried Coratin made by Metagenics - it has plant sterol combination - within 3 months my overall cholesterol went from 246 to 188. I do pay attention to my diet as well, but I had been doing that even with the 246 level. So far I have had no side effects. The dosage is 2 tablets per day - I take just one in the evening. I am not associated with this company in any way. Read More Read Less

I started taking RYR about a month ago because on my recent lab results my numbers were very high. It has not worked for me. Soon after taking it, I started felling neddled pinch and burning sensation on my feet and they feel extremely tired and a little swollen. At first, I though I was tired from my job. But this is the first time, I am experiencing this and I have worked hard my whole life. I stopped taking it, and my symptoms still the same. If anyone have had a similar experience, please let me know if these symptoms will go away and how soon? Read More Read Less

Under doctor's supervision, replaced a daily dose of 20 mg simvastatin (discontinued simvastatin) with 1800 mg red yeast rice (1 capsule in the morning, 2 in the evening). Blood work at 90 days showed better results for LDL & triglycerides than had been obtained with the prescription drug.
