Many people have experienced the annoying, sometimes downright painful sensation of niacin flush at least once during their life, and probably didn't even know what it was. Niacin, by nature, is a great way of reducing your cholesterol. Many over-the-counter cholesterol medications include high does of niacin, among other ingredients. However, one of the unfortunate side effects of taking doses o...

WARNING: taking Niacin (Vitamin B-3) at only 500 MG/ day cost me dearly! My neurologist(a specialist in a sub-type of neurology of which there are only dozen in the US) determined it was toxic causing me total failure of my autonomic nervous system (autonomic polyneuropathy) and these nerves don't grow back! Thanks to that soon after I noticed the problems I continue to deal with 10 yrs later. Dia...

YOU CAN GET NIACIN (Niaspan) OVER THE COUNTER! It's a dietary supplement you can get in the nutrients aisle. It is the exactly the same! This is just a scam medication to get money out of you!

I am currently taking antidepressants and really want to get off of them. I started taking 3 grams of Niacin from GNC. I have been able to notice a difference in my sleeping and overall well being. I do get a flush when I don't eat enough when taking my dose. I will be contacting my doctor to come off of my antidepressants properly. I am hoping Niacin will help and assist me with my depression.

My doctor suggested taking niacin for lowering my borderline high cholesterol. While it did reduce my level by 15 to 20 points I experienced several mini-gout episodes. These occurred even though I was taking allopurinal. I also disliked the flushing I experienced. After discovering the niacin/gout link, I discontinued and we switched to a statin. Cholesterol is now down significantly and I have not had a gout episode since stopping niacin.

The first night I was awakened with severe burning and itching on my arms and legs. When I turned on the light saw that I was covered with hives. Sleep was impossible. The second night I had the same reaction with itching also in my throat and inside my ears! I never took it again. Also, I have stage 3 liver disease. After reading info on this drug, I am confused by my doctors choice to prescribe this drug. I cannot tolerate statins as they cause my liver enzymes to elevate. I cannot tolerate fish oil due to severe cramping in glutes and legs. This treatment was sort of last result.Read More Read Less

Then increased to the Dr. recommended 500 twice a day.Only the nicain that is nicotinic acid worked for me. Very few reactions. Great results.

Triglycerides were sky high, I started taking niacin, red yeast rice, fish oil & garlic capsules. With in two months my triglycerides & cholesterol went from very high to within normal range. Also excercise helped greatly.

The product I was using containing the niacin was called horny Goat Weed by ProLab. I used the product several times with no adverse effects. The last and final time I used it caused a horrible "niacin flush". My face, neck, and pretty much my entire body began to turn red and burn badly. It felt like the worst sunburn I had ever had. Also, I began to feel light headed and my lips became very swollen. This all happened about five minutes after I took the two pills as the directions stated. I had never felt anything like that before and I became very scared. I thought I was having an allergic reaction to something I had eaten while I took the pills. I contacted poison control who then recommended I call 911, wich I did. The ambulance arrived and asked what I had eaten and if I had taken anything with niacin. At the time I did not know that the product I had been taking contained it. The EMT guys recommend I take some benadryl, which I did. My condition got better and after about an hour I felt pretty much normal.. Not really sure if the benadryl did anything or the "niacin flush" was done.. My "niacin flush" experience was very memorable. I WILL not be taking anymore of the pills. Read More Read Less

I was on this medicine, NIASPAN, for 2-3 months and woke up one day dizzier than I ever have been in my life!!! I was like my eyes were on a carousel. The room spun rapidly to the right! Nothing I did worked to stop it!!! The room was moving with my eyes closed, I was terribly sick to my stomach. My Pharmacist told me the NIASPAN would have to wear off, and it would in a day. A day!!! I couldn't work, drive, cook, or even walk without help. Miserable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Read More Read Less

I have only taken the 500mg per night for 2 weeks and have horrible problems with my legs and ankles burning and itching - in addition to my leg muscles and tendons becoming extremely tight and making me shuffle when I walk. I will stop taking and try over-the counter slow release Niacin, but I will wait for a week or so to see if these symptoms subside.

Severe reaction on first day of rx. Dose was 500mg. I took and aspirin and had a snack prior to taking the drug. Woke up 4 hours later abruptly, entire body burning, beat red all over, massive itching, dizzy, nauseous. Took my BP and it was a dangerous 65/41. Never again! Dangerous drug imho.

I have been on niaspan for two months now. I have been taking an aspirin 1/2 hour before taking the med. When I take the pill I also eat apple sauce. There is something in apples that greatly reduces the side effects. I tried one evening without and I had horrible flushing and itching, racing heart for about an hour. I considered stopping this treatment but continued. I will only take if I have apple sauce to take with it. My doctor told me the pectin in apples reduces theflushing. I agree, so far so good.Read More Read Less

I wanted to thank everyone for their comments all helped me a lot. I am starting my treatment tomorrow (the reason for my stars). My doctor told me to take Niacin OVC rather than a prescription. From what all of you have said I will try the flush free and hope that will do the job. I cannot take baby aspirin as I am on Coumadin. I cannot take any of the statins. I have tried 3 of them and wound up on the couch almost crippled, the aches and pain in legs and joints did not stop. So I pray this will be an answer for my cholesterol. I am also on Zetia and that doesn't seem to bother me but it isn't taking cholesterol down much at all. I will report on this again after I've been on the treatment for awhile.Read More Read Less

I take niaspan ER 1000mg RX perscribed at bedtime. I have severe flushing, burning, rash, and itching. I cannot take asprin because it causes me to bleed in stomache. My doctor told me to take with applesauce. The applesauce has a natural antihistimine in it. You wouldn`t beleive how it works. I still also experience sweating. Sometimes I still get flushing and rash, especially if eat chocolate!! I hate this drug!!!!Sleep problems too!! Also can cause diabetic problems!!
