The "official" review on this site is ludicrous. As one other consumer mentioned, the reason that there is so little research, etc. is that no one stands to make billions of dollars from patenting it and selling it for 100x the cost to produce it. I can tell you based upon my 5 years of experience with betaine HCL that it is perfectly safe (as long as you do not have ulcers of any kind). Fu...

I had a very violent reaction with vomiting after taking two capsules until it was out of my stomach. This treatment is not FDA approved.

I'm over 70 and have an autoimmune condition. I was having gas and something that felt like heartburn when I burped. Took an anti-gas and a Tums and the gas and heartburn got worse ... like what the heck! This inspired me to Google low stomach acid which lead me to a very good Cleveland Clinic article on hypochlorhydria, symptoms were a perfect fit for my condition. Order a Betaine Hydrochloride supplement, now take one during the last half of any full meals I have. No more problems. Awesome fix for low stomach acid, but make sure you know what you have before you take. it. Interesting that hypochlorhydria was not even one of the choices in the reasons for taking list!Read More Read Less

My acid reflux and burping was gone in 3 days. I only took 1 capsule during eating the biggest meal of the day. Don't take it if you have ulcers or problems with bile flow. Bile needs to neutralize the acid when it goes from stomach to intenstines.

Just recently started on this, and my heartburn is gone. I no longer take a PPI, which is dangerous as it just masks other issues. No problems whatsoever, and I am a senior citizen.

Have had reflux for 4 years. Doctors prescribed Omoprozole for my condition. Tapered off medication, bought HCL with pepsin & digestive enzymes. Started taking the enzymes with bitter tinksures, no noticeable improvement! Diarrhoea/Fatty stool/White specs ect. Stool completely back to normal after a couple of days. Will update re-reflux down the track with my health journey. ??

Had colorectal cancer twice and because intestines were bolted and also due to scar tissues from 5 surgeries at abdomen area, digestion became a major problem. Was told by surgeon to avoid fibre after being hospitalised for indigestion which required aspiration by tube from throat to stomach to remove the undigested contents for 5 days straight. Constipation has also become a nightmare as every episode can take about 8 hours to resolve. Doc recommended Duphalac but it caused me stomach cramps and gas. Tried digestive enzymes which worked but recently the product was discontinued and after researching, I found Betaine Hcl & Pepsin which has lots of good reviews. I take 2 caps at the beginning of every main meal but didn’t dare try to take the quantity till I have heartburn then reduce though I have heard that from my ex gym coach. The 2 caps worked fine and thank God, I now have regular bowel movements daily which is a major relief. This has also resolved the huge hard lump on my upper abdomen after a meal. I no longer have to rely strongly on supplements and liquid food for nutrition. I now carry these pills with me wherever I go as they are my life saver. Had also introduced it to my husband who has been getting bloating and belching issues and problem wasn’t resolved after visits to gastroenterologist which cost thousands of dollars. It has also helped him tremendously. Do give it a try but be cautious if you are unsure if you have peptic ulcers. Good luck, all. ??Read More Read Less

Was taking antacids every day for a few weeks (why I was doing this is a whole other story) and within about 8 weeks had gained 50lbs and picked up C. Difficile (infection of the Colon) just from lowering my stomach acid levels. Long story short: Antacids are poison and ruining most peoples’ lives. Several relatives of mine have had similar problems. My own parents have had doctors pushing antacids on them out of the blue during regular checkups when they have enough digestion issues as it is. Most of my issues have resolved after taking Betaine HLC for less than a week. There are of course people who will not benefit from HCL or may have adverse effects but a good majority of people eating the modern western diet seem to benefit. Especially those who have been dragged into the big pharma antacid money machineRead More Read Less

I have been taking this for many many years. I do very well on it and not so well when I discontinue using it. My body’s age is now 84 and I am considered to be quite fit and healthy. The only question I have is why has the price increased from under $9 a bottle of 120 tablets to over $24 in the last 2 to 3 years?.

I’ve had untreated GERD for 20+ years. Just didn’t bother me enough to go to specialist. Then felt like I was having a heart attack, hoarse for 5+ years, nausea in the am. Got an endoscopy and I have stage 4 erosion of the esophagus with stomach tissue replacing part of the lining (Barrett’s) Taking generic protonix and seemed to help but not really. I think it was a placebo effect. Still had nausea. Oh I can’t take Pepcid as it gave me a migraine but that was Drs first choice. Due to the cancer risk of my condition I didn’t ask any questions about the PPI. It was a necessary evil. I do know it blocks absorption of nutrients etc. Anyway Idk how I came across Betaine HCL info but after reading I ordered a good quality one with Pepcin. My bottle said it’s derived from porcine so is it pig stomach acid?! I take one capsule 1 gram of Betaine and 47mg Pepsin (one capsule contains both) w each meal for 1 week so far. No heartburn no nausea. FYI I accidentally overdosed as I threw in 6 capsules in my empty Wednesday part of my pill case to take with me out of town. When Wednesday came I took my “Wednesday vitamins” forgetting what I had done and took 6 of the Betaine. My stomach either has a hole eaten away, my kidneys or liver is working hard or I’m ok. I had no side effects that I could feel. Fingers crossed. Read More Read Less

I was reading several articles about this supplement because of my inability to have consistent bowel movements. No matter what I ate or eliminated from my diet including increasing fiber, eliminating dairy, etc., etc. in the past three years I would experience loose or ribbon stools, or even diarhea several times of the day and night. I am taking 500mg of the betain HCL with Pepsin and not only are my bowels now working normally, that full feeling is gone after meals, as well as the acid reflux that was a challenge as well since all I could do for that was famotadine. Taking less famotadine, enjoying dairy and salads, and do believe this supplement is the reason!Read More Read Less

I had a botched inguinal hernia surgery December 2021. Because of the terrible nerve damage pain, I developed "presumed" gastritis. Doctors put me on Omeprazole and Pantoprazole (PPI's) and just kept prescribing them for 8 months while my condition was steadily getting worse with stomach pain, gas, bloating, distension, nausea, constipation. I started reading about hypochlorhydria--same symptoms as hyperchlorhydria but with constipation as well. Out of desperation, I cut the PPI's out of my life. Instead, after doing the baking soda test, the lemon juice test, and the "Betaine HCL Challenge" with Betaine HCL with Pepsin and Gentian Bitters, I now, after a week, feel much, much better. My stomach is much less painful, gassy, bloated, nauseated, etc. I take one 650 mg capsule with breakfast, and three capsules with lunch, and dinner. I also take 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar with an oz of water before meals. In between meals, when I have stomach pain, I take 1 tbsp of lemon juice, which helps me greatly. I still have the constipation but have hopes that will improve as well. When I see my Gastroenterologist next week, I will be insisting on a stomach acid level test. Hope this helps someone. I have been taking only 1 capsule with my lunch and again with dinner. Doing very well at first -- better bathroom habits, good energy, etc. Now 1.5 months later, I have rectal area rash and mucous with a bm. I think I'd better stop! FYI, I have been taking Betaine HCL with Pepcid.

I have had stomach issues for almost 5 years. I have seen countless doctors, each time they were unable to explain what was wrong. And each time I was offered a low dose of anti-depressants to treat the condition. My symptoms were in two states. I was getting gastritis 1-2 times each year. Outside of this I still had problematic symptoms. After eating a small amount, I felt very full and tired. I couldn't focus, think or conversate well at all. And each night I would have an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach area that disrupted my sleep horrendously, each and every night. I have tried many things, both holistic and conventional treatments. This is the first thing, after years of searching, that has helped address the issue. I would eat a few small bites, then take one capsule (650mg), then finish the meal. I was no longer overwhelmed by simple meals, and was starting to sleep normally. I started to remember what life was like before my stomach issues started. Without much research or guidance on this supplement, I was making up the dosage and instructions. I decided to increase the dose to two capsules to see if I could get more benefit. And sometimes I would take it without a meal. If I had some discomfort at a bad time I would take it and it would go away. After about 5 of the best months I have had since my issues began, I'm sad to say I came down with one of the worst gastritis flare ups I've ever had. I now believe this supplement was part of what triggered the flare up. I think my mistake was increasing the dose to 2 capsules, and taking it without a meal. Once, I took 2 in the night and went back to sleep. The next morning my stomach was very sore. The gastritis had already started, but I think this aggravated it even more. It took about 4-5 months to heal, and now I am thinking about whether to go back on it or not. I think I will try it again, and see how it goes. But I will only take one capsule with a meal. Never increase the dose, and never without a meal. In summary, this supplement can be extremely beneficial, for issues that conventional medicine has failed to address. However it must be taken with care. Without any reliable research or guidance, it comes with some risk. Hopefully my account can help others treat their issue in a more safe manner.Read More Read Less

This article scared me. If you can print something this distorted on an issue with which I am familiar and well versed in, what will I do with an issue in which I am not and trust what you have put out!? It even gives a blatantly wrong “factual”! That FDA has banned this product. Absolutely, no such thing! This should be brought down asap!
