I am back to report that I did find lysine to be more effective and much less expensive than valtrex. I took 3000-4000mg at signs of outbreak for 7-10 days to prevent the outbreak, but what was really my problem was Diet, I found a website that was clear on the foods that was causing me to have frequent outbreaks eventhough lysine was clearing it up faster but they were frequent because I was eat...

I took 3000mg (3 capsules) on Thursaday, then 1 on the Friday (following the "tingle") on Friday afternoon my face starting burning, swelling up unevenly, with a arash. By Saturday I had rash on my arms (inner elbow down to wrist) on my neck and chest. My eyes seemed to become small as did my lips. Sunday (today) my face is enormous and very uncomfortable

I had never experienced the pain and discomfort of a cold sore until approximately 10 years ago. At that time, I felt a sensation similar to a bee sting. As I began with one, it was as though it multiplied overnight. My physician told me it was my body reacting to the stress of insufficient sleep and poor diet habits; i.e. fast food, no fruits and very few veggies. A nurse recommended Lysine as a supplement. Once I began taking it daily, I felt better and have had fewer, minor cold sores. However, if I am in the sun, wind, or extreme cold for prolonged periods of time, or have any dental work done, I can rest assured that I will get a cold sore; always in the same place. I am very faithful in remembering the Lysine; if not, my skin reminds me.Read More Read Less

I would get cold sores on the sides of my mouth and on the roof of my mouth almost 2-3 times a month. I tried Zinc it helped it heal faster. But for the last 6 months I have not had a cold sore because I started adding Lysine to my vitamin routine. Very Pleased with results.

I take one lysine pill a day and it keeps my cold sores and canker sores away. I have also changed my toothpaste. I don't use any that contain sodium laural sulfate. That ingredient is linked to causing mout sores.

L-Lysine does work for cold sores, BUT as I have GERD it also affects my stomach. I will most likely have to quit taking this medication. The salve does work, but doesn't keep me from getting cold sore, but does alleviate the symptoms. It seems as if that leaves a person with only two options, stomach problems or living with cold sores and treating them topically.

Mouth ulcers - I bite my cheek from time to time with the usual development of an ulcer. Using lysine immediately after an incident eliminates ulcers and increases healing.

I have been taking this four a year now due to a search I found on natural treatments for HSV2 and I do not have any outbreaks anymore. I was never diagnosed with this but I saw signs so I hurried up and found out how to treat it. When I went for a check up they found no HSV in my blood. So yes Lysine works wonders I'm proof. thank God for this.

I have had genital herpes for 20 years, I have used Lysine as a treatment for the past approx 5 tears, have had few breakouts, I try to take 2500 mg of lysine as soon as I feel abreakout coming on and take 1000-2500 mg a day until it has past... then 500 mg daily..with good results... I know there is concern about how this affects my liver but for now it works and saves me expensive physician visits and Rx's

30 years ago I came across L-Lysine as a treatment for cold sores. I have been using it to keep them at bay and more recently to keep from getting shingles from a severe allergic reaction to prescription medicastions.

I have used Lysine (in pill 1,000 and lip form) for years for cold sores. I used to have hugh cold sores for weeks. Dires the cold stores up. If I use the pills more than 3 per day for over 4 days I begin to have gout problems, mostly the feet or hands. Sometimes with the cold sore pain it is worth the other pain.

60 year old male with HSV type 2 for 14 months. Took Lysine for 8 months with no outbreak. Doctor recommended Valtrex. So started taking that too. Found Lysine as effective as Valtrex. Have had no outbreak taking both. Changed diet to avoid arginine where possible.
