I am back to report that I did find lysine to be more effective and much less expensive than valtrex. I took 3000-4000mg at signs of outbreak for 7-10 days to prevent the outbreak, but what was really my problem was Diet, I found a website that was clear on the foods that was causing me to have frequent outbreaks eventhough lysine was clearing it up faster but they were frequent because I was eat...

I took 3000mg (3 capsules) on Thursaday, then 1 on the Friday (following the "tingle") on Friday afternoon my face starting burning, swelling up unevenly, with a arash. By Saturday I had rash on my arms (inner elbow down to wrist) on my neck and chest. My eyes seemed to become small as did my lips. Sunday (today) my face is enormous and very uncomfortable

I have been taking 1000mg once a day for nearly a year and i have had just one coldsore during this time and a small one at that. I let my guard down and ate a large amount of nuts which contain arginine so its serves me right. Lysine is a wonder drug for me but I must take it every day or I get the tingle. I used to get four coldsores with each outbreak and outbreaks were every 3-5 weeks so more or less constant. Its a joy and a pleasure to be cold sore free. I thought I'd never say those words.Read More Read Less

I am 21 years old and I always get large cold sores that spread and usually I get about four at a time. Lysine helps me by making my cold sores dry faster and by keeping me from getting more. When I don't take lysine I get about four cold sores when I do take it I get one or two. I love it and it works for me! I would definitely recommend it to other people, I saw relief with it you just might too!

I have gotten cold sore for many years. They ysed to be very large and gross. I use a lysine lip balm and take 2000 mg lysine along with 2000 mg vitamin c at the first tingling and then twice a day (at bed time and first thing in the morning) for two or three days. This doesn't completely eliminate them but they are always very small. No one even notices them. The vitamin c is important. It really seems to make a difference.

On the advice of my Dr, I have used Twinlab L-Lysine since 2004 to eliminate genital soars that would pop up frequently. I do not get the sores unless I run out of the product, when I get the product and use it religiously on a daily basis, I do not get the sores.

Cuts severity and duration time of a cold sore. If I take it RIGHT when my lip starts tingling (before a cold sore develops), the entire thing is gone in 2-3 days. If I take it when the sore has already developed, I expect to be back to normal in 7 days. It DOES stop the sorefrom growing. 1st - 3rd day of taking it, I take 2000mg w/each meal. If I don't take it w/food, I get diarrhea. Even w/ food, side effects are dizzy headache, slight nausea, & upset stomach. I also apply Abreva 5x daily along with the L-Lysine treatment. The pills tend to be very large. That's the only annoying part.Read More Read Less

I read about lysine after I tried toothpaste and that made it worst and made the cold sore spread else where overnight. I woke up with a swollen lip so I bo uh ht some lysine. I took 2 500Mg pills every 2 hours during the day and thos morning it is nearly gone. I plan to take one 500Mg a day after its gone. Pills are a little too big and hard to swallow

My mother had a "cold sore" while visiting relatives many years ago. They gaver Lysine. I have since used this whenever I feel one coming on (if I can catch it) and when there is an outbreak. If I can "catch" it, there is no outbreak and it clears in less than 24 hours. If I can't catch it, then it will clear in a couple of days--way faster than not using Lysine. I have recommended it to people who have really bad breakouts and it was amazing how quickly they began to clear. I don't take Lysine every day--just when it is needed, which isn't often.Read More Read Less

Stops my cold sores dead in their tracks, and I also used it preventively during the summer months when the sun aggravates my condition. However, I also suffered from severe gastrointestinal conditions and ended up losing 30 pounds quite rapidly. My doctor told me it was not related but when I quit using Lysine during the winter my symptoms went away. Has anyone else had these issues?

Since I've been using L-Lysine I've noticed a greater time span between outbreaks, and the actual could sore seems to not fully develop. Within 3-5 days

This virus runs in my family, and I have suffered with cold sores for years but since I have taken L-Lysine (over 15 years), I have not experienced any cold sores. I take it every day.

This is the best treatment I've ever used for cold sores! It heals most of them up in about 3 days. The only downside is that the new bottle I just bought the pills are huge and very hard to swallow.

For a mouth ulcer in my throat and beginning on the side of my tongue, my doctor recommended 1000mg 2x per day for a week then 1000 a day for a week. I get these lovely sores as a gift from 'incomplete lupus' (still can't quite believe my luck) and they hurt and just make me feel totally wiped out. This time, just a few hours after taking these miracle pills, my energy was back and the pain was gone. Astounding. Happily started taking as prescribed and felt absolutely normal. After a few days, I'd forgotten about them & felt no pain, and consequently forgot to take the Lysine, only to feel the sores begin again. Thanks, WebMd -- reading these reviews was very, very helpful. I've had shingles and love chocolate & nuts & grapes - now have clues about how these all may be related. This is a very pressure-filled time of year at work, so guess I'd better lay off the chocolate til it passes! Isn't the internet great??? Read More Read Less
