I've been taking Ambien for about 5 yrs. for chronic insomnia and night terror/nightmares. It has been a lifesaver for me but it IS a tricky drug. Take it when you are actually ready to go to sleep and you are already IN BED. Don't get back up!!! or you will be walking around the house eating, having weird conversations with your significant other about things that you would probably not be talkin...
Although it helps you fall asleep, it often stays in your system for greater than 8 hours. Per 60 minutes, it can impair cognition equivalent to being legally drunk. It was not safe to take on days that I was working.

I have trouble sleeping AND my husband's nightly snoring into my ear. (No, I don't have somewhere else I can sleep.) I have taken Ambien, and then Ambien CR for several years. It never works immediatley, even Ambien CR--it takes hours for it to kick in, and then I sleep too long and don't get things done.Lunesta did ZERO for me, natural things have not worked, OTC sleep/pain aids have not worked. Medicine usually has very little effect on me--medicine of any kind. I have tried taking Ambien different ways. I really need sleep--otherwise, I always see the sun rising. Is there anyone else who has a lot fo trouble sleeping for whom Ambien doesn't work? What do you do?Read More Read Less

I have had trouble sleeping for the past year. My doctor prescribed Ambien for me to use 1-2 weeks. I have had the best sleep ever. I am actually dreaming again. I have had no side effects the next day. I feel rested, and have alot more energy. I have actually lost a little bit of the weight that I put on this past year.

Use Ambien 3 to 4 times each month. Usually works very well. Once in a while it does work well but that is very rare. I take the 10 mg and it does not cause any problems in the morning. Be sure you have 7 to 8 hours available for sleep.

Very effective, but made me feel horrible in the morning. If you are young and have sleep problems, switch to lunesta. When you get older, this drug will work perfectly. I used it in college and i missed a ton of classes. Effective, but a risk.

I have been on ambien and ganeric form 6 mo. If I take and go straight to bed I have no problems. My family says if I take and sit up I say things and act funny, like a drunk. I do not feel tired in the morning but do tire easy in the afternoon. Only side effect that I am wondering about and no one has mentioned, my face keeps breaking out and I never had that problen before. I do wake up hungry in middle of the night but get a cookie and go back to bed. GREAT MED! WORKS LIKE A CHARM

FOR 10 YRS OR MORE I WOULD SLEEP AN HOUR OR 2 AND WAKE UP REPEATEDLY DURING THE NIGHT. I RESISTED TAKING SLEEP MEDICATION. I HAVE LUPUS AND FIBROMYALGIA. SINCE STARTING GENERIC AMBIEN 4 MONTHS AGO (2.5 MG) 1/2 A TABLET, I SLEEP AT LEAST 6 HOURS WITHOUT WAKING. I AM HURTING LESS, AND FEELING BETTER DURING THE DAY - LESS TIRED.

I have tried several other sleep medications, but Ambien works the best. I fall asleep fast and stay asleep for 6-8 hours. Ambien CR did not work for me. Nor did Luestra or generic Ambien.

After taking for two weeks, I can now sleep regularly for at least a 4-hour block, a few times six-hour block. I was waking every 1-3 hours every night.

Even when taking only half a 5mg pill, I have trouble the next morning coming out of a fog. I feel a pretty strong Ambien hangover. It also causes drug induced sleep walking. Both my husband and I have gone places (yes, in a car sometimes) and have no memory of the event. I do not like this medication at all.
