the only drug that actually helped slow down the production of kidney stones is thiola unfortunately since the % of users who have the disease cystinuria is small. The drug co was unable to reduce its rates and so medicare in 2010 dropped it off its formulary. since the cost is to high most users stopped taking the drug. this is a outrage. any physician who has experienced the pain of a stone will...
Be careful. I was on this medicine and my platelet count went way down four years ago. Since then the platelets have not returned to normal levels. I am going for another surgery (11/2012) and have to take medicine just to increase the platelets.

I haven't noticed a decrease in stone production since starting this medication, but I do not have more stones than before. The only bad side effect I get from this is that my tongue can go numb sometimes.

ive been thiola for a couple years now ,y level was 1000,then it went down to 400 in may now that my doc increased the meds to 900mg a day my level has gone up, we cant figure out why, Ive had 26 surgerys since 1984 and have not had to have surgery since 1995, its better than the depenicillamen that made my hair fall out, one of the side effects of thiola is it makes ur teeth go bad, I had perfect teeth but since being on thiola Ive had to have 4 teeth pulled and need more to be removed, but its great not to have a surgery every year, when this first came out it was $600 every 2 weeks, thak god the dayton veterans hosp gets it and I get it for nothing all I can say is im glad it works for me, my sis had stones also and she cant take it and shes had 52 sugerys, so thumbs up for thiolaRead More Read Less

this drug has helped me but I have to take 3 pills 3 times a day. Plus when I hit the gap in the insurance I have to pay over $300 per month. That is hard but better than having kidney stones blasted every 6 months!

Since taking Thiola I've experienced that I have difficulty maintaining my haircolor after my hairdresser applies it. The color fades quickly and becomes brassy. I don't know if it's due to the medicine or not.
