I take Amitiza twice a day. It helps me have 4 to 5 bowel movements a week. I was only going once a week before and the straining was terrible. I have a predictable movement instead of the explosive bowel movements I get with linzess or laxatives.

While the medicine did what it is supposed to do, I had a severe reaction to it. The side-effects mentioned the possibility of "chest tightness" & that is what happened. I was on the medicine for3 days and each day the symptom got worse. Even after quitting, the sensation that I had severe chest congestion remained. I have been off of it for over 3 weeks now and still have that sensation when ta...

I was instructed to take with food, if I had frequent loose bowels, take 1 time per day. I took the first pill and within minutes I experienced slight dizzy sensation, nausea, and a little brain fog. Severe loose stools through the night, 17 extreme watery movements the next day. I didn't take any more of the medication, developed charley-horse type cramps in long muscles in my thighs and arms. This is the worst thing I have ever put in my mouth.

I have IBS with Chronic constipation, have had for most of my life. My doc gave me a one week sample and by the second day of treatment i noticed no more stomach issues such as all the weird noised it makes after eating, gas, bloating and pains. I had a bm everyday with ease! I have been on eveything, laxative stool softeners fiber mixes etc. I feel brand new now. I did have some side effects that went away after a few days, i had my doctor call in a prescription for me by the third day because i felt so good. The side effects were a mild headache, i also experienced shortness of breath that went away in about 45 minutes. The overall experiece was good enough for me to ignore the side effects. I am only on week two but i feel great and i would recommend this to anyone but give it a good couple of weeks to work in your system. Read More Read Less

30 minutes after taking the pill, I was nauseous, sweating, cramping and had HORRIBLE gas. The urge to go to the bathroom was overwhelming and almost didn't take it a few times. I tried it for a week to see if it would get better, but didn't. The side effects were not worth the bowel movement.

Horrible medication! It caused severe dizziness and severe pressure in my head within 20 minutes of taking it with a meal. Feeling like I was going to fain, could not walk to the bathroom by myself, felt dizzy for hours after the pill of 24mcg. I called the doctor on call for advise while staying on the sofa to keep safe from falling to the floor. The doctor advised to stop taking Amitiza but said that only nausea was a common side effect. It is not nausea at all! They know it is extreme fainting and dizziness sensation that makes you unable to function. It has nothing to do with any stomach problem that you may feel. Horrible and long lasting effect (all ight long!). I will never take it again. I never had any reaction to any medication.Read More Read Less

I am 61 with a 15 yr HX of Fibromyalgia & IBS. I also take narcotics as a chronic pain patient. I normally take 2 stool softeners & 2 Sennas a day in order to have reguular BMs...tho am still constipated to the level of cement. I have tried Amitiza twice. Neither time has it worked at all. I have not had any side effects except weight gain. I am on Weight Watchers & steadily lose until I go on Amitiza, then I gain. (Also swelling in fingers, etc.). Obviously it is not worth it to me to take this drug. I am an RN & from reading the high incidence of significant side effect others are experiencing, I sure don't recommend Amitiza. Thanks to all for the reviews.Read More Read Less

After suffering SEVERE constipation for more than two years (for which nothing really worked except for Peri-Colace type stimulant laxitives) and seeing my GI three times, I was finally able to convince him to prescribe it. My first prescription was for the 24 mg pills. They affected me immediately by causing several consecutive (within 30-40 minutes of each other) severe episodes of diarreah. This of course took care of the constipation, but maybe too well. After 1.5 days (or three doses), I was not able to continue with it, as I litterally could not go to sleep as I had to be ready to run to the bathroom. I called my doctor and discussed my reaction to the 24's. He then prescribed the 8 mg pills. They are far less severe, but still cause diarreah instead of something resembling normal bowell movements. I only take one a day, usually an hour or so after I wake up. They are effective in preventing constipation, and getting me thru the day. Despite the diarreah-ish side effects, it sure beats being constipated and the bowell pains I experienced before, and I will continue to use it as it truely has worked for me. Drawbacks are only that if taking a trip by plane or by car, the sudden urges to go require quick access to a bathroom, so I have to avoid taking it until I arrive at a destination. It is however, an expensive perscription, and hope some day the price will come down a bit. Read More Read Less

I have taken this medicine for the past several years. It has been a miracle to me. Prior to taking this medication I was in emergency every few months for chronic constipation and severe pain.

I've been taking this drug for about a month now for my ongoing constipation. Within a few days of taking it I had daily bowel movements and I was elated. I take the 8mg twice a day. But now it is causing me to have 3-4 soft bowel movements a day...in which I don't like. My stomach is also a little loud at times and uncomfortable. I've had no side effects as long as I make sure I take it with food. So I'm going to only take one a day and see if that works for me. I think the med is very expensive but still worth it to me.Read More Read Less

I have went to bathroom a little but the side effects are bad. I have gained about 2-3 pounds a week on this medicine. I have daily headaches and nausea. I am having horrible mood swings with a lot of agitation, a lot of crying and fatigue. And about 2 weeks in I began having a lot of joint pain. I am miserable with this but miserable without it. I will probably stop the medicine.

OMG. SO horrible! I literally suffered every side effect, from intense nausea to severe headaches to back pain. Today was the 3rd day I took it, and I threw it in the trash! I had diarreha so bad that I was concerned that I was going to end up in the ER from such severe dehydration! I can see how it can be helpful for some, but it definiitally was not for me!

I have been taking Amitiza for about 3 months. I still dont have regular BMs. I have had extreme bloating and uncontrollable gas, so much that i dont want to go out in public. Ive gained 28lbs in the time ive been taking it. I decided to look at the reviews tonight & i see its not just me. I am not going to take this drug anymore.

I've been taking it for about a year now. At first I loved it, it helped me 'move' my bowels - quickly. RELIEF ! Despite the recommended 2 caps per day, I was only taking one. Now, lately I've noticed more nausea, headaches and less effectiveness for it's intended purpose. The chest tightening is VERY SCARY. I'm also rectally bleeding, which I'm not sure is a side effect, or attributable to something else.... It's frustrating that the medicine is in my body, but not working. I'd hate to think I'm absorbing it for no reason. Am thinking of asking my doctor to switch me to something else. Reading your posts here has helped validate my side effects, and to know I'm not alone. I'm not taking anything for the nausea, and wonder if my other medications are contraindicated. I'm on heart medication as well as some others, which are too numerous to name - but it makes me wonder if they're stopping the Amitiza from working.... Don't know what to do at this point.Read More Read Less

Taken first dose (8mg) in the last hour. Am experiencing difficulty breathing and chest tightness that is scary. Do see it listed as a side effect, but if this gets worse, will be heading to the ER.
