I take Amitiza twice a day. It helps me have 4 to 5 bowel movements a week. I was only going once a week before and the straining was terrible. I have a predictable movement instead of the explosive bowel movements I get with linzess or laxatives.

While the medicine did what it is supposed to do, I had a severe reaction to it. The side-effects mentioned the possibility of "chest tightness" & that is what happened. I was on the medicine for3 days and each day the symptom got worse. Even after quitting, the sensation that I had severe chest congestion remained. I have been off of it for over 3 weeks now and still have that sensation when ta...

This drug is extremely effective and predictable without side effects for me and has greatly improved my quality of life and that of a few family members who are also now taking it (clearly genetics a factor in original diagnosis).

I do not have IBS or painful bloating. I went to my doctor for a yearly physical and he asked about my digestion. I told him I defecate every 4 days. He told me it isn't healthy to only go to the bathroom this much. But I've never had pain or constipation problems. Well, he prescribed Amitiza. I took it for 2 weeks and I did end up going every day....though runny and loose. After a few wks I stopped taking it. About 5 days after stopping I had the WORST CONSTIPATION and BOWEL MOVEMENT I've ever had in my life. Is this b/c I stopped and my body was used to the tract lubrication? Does this stuff build up in your system continuously...and then when you stop taking it...you have difficulty expelling it all? That's what it felt like. The stool was so large and hard I was on the toilet for 2 hours crying in agony. Finally took a suppository and it triggered reaction...but was painful. I probably tore something b/c now it burns SO MUCH when I defecate...that only a warm shower afterward makes it feel better. In my panic, I started taking the Amitiza again so it would soften stool...which it has. But do I have to stay on this forever? Has anyone had this experience when stopping the Amitiza? Again, I didn't have constipation pain or IBS. Just infrequent bathroom trips that doctor said wasn't good for me. Read More Read Less

I always stop taking amitiza when feeling cured. My pharmacist knows this and says she is expecting another shipment and the ration is 4-pills. Believe me, better than a gold bar.

I have Great Difficulty having a Bowel Movement & I have to irrigate twice a day, sometimes for hours to get any relieve. Went to the doctor - he put me on Amitiza, twice a day before meals. Took the first pill - less than two hours later started vomiting (in the drug store, no less.) Even though I knew I had diarrhea, because of my problem (what ever it is) I still had to irrigate to relive the pressure of the diarrhea. Once I started going I could not stop for several hours. Good thing I did not go to work that day.Read More Read Less

Within 30 min I experienced a terrible headache and nauseasness. Followed by the runs. When I thought I was done, it started again. Like water pouring out of my bottom. It left me with bleeding hemeroids.

Took the 24 mg / 3x a day with meals. Tried this for 2 weeks until I couldn't take it anymore. Made me vomit, nauseous, stomach cramps, stomach burning, gas, diarrhea, and incontinence. It was awful. I have never felt that sick, ever. It was almost as if I had food poisoning everyday. I felt better as soon as I stopped taking it. I'd rather have serious constipation then feel like that again.

I have been constipated for most of my life, and became addicted to laxatives. i was tired of taking laxatives and never knowing when i would have a bowel movement or diarrhea. my doctor gave me sample of Amitiza 8 and 24. i was afraid to try them after reading the reviews and side effects, but finally did try last week. the 8 mcg did nothing for me but made me very sleepy so i'm now taking the 24mcg and i actually had 2 bowel movements that were fairly normal. i'm still very tired and hope that the bowel movements will be more often or daily. i have no nausea, or diarrhea or chest tightness which is good. i sure hope this continues helping me as it's a miracle drug.Read More Read Less

I have chronic idiopathic constipation that I was diagnosed with almost 2 years ago. I have been on Amitiza 24 for about the same amount of time. I have not suffered from any of the side effects except for a little nausea here and there. I take one pill in the morning with my tea and miralax (as prescribed by my gastro) and the other at night before bed. I would say that 5-6 days of the week it works. You definitely have to watch what you eat when you take this medication, though, because some foods will make you more gaseous than others (for me this is dairy and most fruits and veggies). Overall, this medicine has been a life changer. I went from not "going" for weeks at a time to "going" almost every day. I do run 6 days a week and watch my caloric intake which might help with the effectiveness. Read More Read Less

I am a 51 yr old female. I have suffered stomach issues most of my life; constipation was part of my laundry-list of complaints. My PCP solved my severe constipation and trips to the ER by simply telling me to eat a bowl of Fiber One cereal each morning. However, I continued to suffer with bloating and, most recently, a choking sensation due to gastric acids backing into my esophagus. My Specialist prescribed Amitiza 24mg. I took only one and experienced: bloating, headache, and leg pains. All comments helped me decide not to continue on this med. Read More Read Less

I suffered from Chronic Constipation for the last 10 years plus. I currently take (24mcg) 2-3 times a week at 4:00 AM on an empty stomach. Thereafter, it generally results in my going 2-4 times over the next six hours. In this sense the drug has been a God Send! Side effects include pain breathing and some chest pain which goes away. One thing I have been noticing lately is it seems I am retaining water, like 5-6 pounds over my normal weight and I am curious to know if anyone else is experiencing this side-effect. To my knowledge this is not mentioned as a possible side effect.Read More Read Less
