I take Amitiza twice a day. It helps me have 4 to 5 bowel movements a week. I was only going once a week before and the straining was terrible. I have a predictable movement instead of the explosive bowel movements I get with linzess or laxatives.

While the medicine did what it is supposed to do, I had a severe reaction to it. The side-effects mentioned the possibility of "chest tightness" & that is what happened. I was on the medicine for3 days and each day the symptom got worse. Even after quitting, the sensation that I had severe chest congestion remained. I have been off of it for over 3 weeks now and still have that sensation when ta...

After one year of use, I find it difficult to stabilize the dosage. The 24 mg worked consistently for a month but then I develop abdominal pain and painful gas. I find greater success and flexibility using the 8 mg dose alternating with Miralax and Citrucel to balance-out the side effects.

I had a Similiar reaction as another reviewer. Day 1 I took 2 doses at 24 mcg. After the 2nd dose I started having extreme emotional feelings and mental thoughts I have never had before. I cried hysterically and uncontrollably. I was overcome with depression and had suicidal thoughts. I just made the connection between my experience and the medication by reading that one persons review. I was also very nauseas had to take prescription nausea medicine by Day 2. I only took one on Day 2. Today is Day 3, 9:22 pm on the a East coast and I was just contemplating taking one since I've not taken any today. But said why should I ? I've been having diarrhea like BMs need I take more? These questions drove me to google this medication and thank God I did. I am certain he is saying "heck no, don't take anymore!"Read More Read Less

I have been on this med for about a month. 2 weeks at 8 mcg 2 x a day, no bad side effects but absolutely no improvement in biwel movements. Doctor increased to 24 mcg twice a day. I make sure to take it with food. Almost 2 weeks and just having very small BM's. Horribke bloating, dry mouth, upset stomach, had chest and throat tightness twice and thick mucus. My doctor is a distance away at Stanford. Notified them, was told to get a priority EKG but stay on the meds! EKG was ok. Nurse keeps telling me give it time to work. A month??!! The only other drug they put me on is Gabapentin, which dies not list any of these GI problems except causing constipation!! I want off this stuff!! I really think it is causing worse duscomfort. I was optimistic as it seems to have worked for so many but nit me. I just feel sick.Read More Read Less

Been on 8 mcg twice a day for over two weeks with absolutely no improvement other than maybe one small BM in the mornings. I eat breakfast and dinner and take a pill after. Have had no nausea. My back does hurt but I have degeneration so can!0't say it is the med. Was taking Mirakax also twice a day and still no better. Dictir said to increase my dose to 24 mcg twice a day. I hate drugs and have some 8 mcg pills left so started increasing to 16 mcg just today. I do feel a bit dizzy. Hope this increase will help. Miserable with bloating.Read More Read Less

CIDP is interfering with bowel function. I don't think it is working. I go 4 or 5 days without bm. When I have bm it is forced out by gas.

I have MS which I suspect is the underlying cause of the chronic constipation. I am ambulatory but chronic constipation has set in over the last 4-5 years. Miralax, magnesium, stool softeners, ground flaxseed, high-quality yoghurt, warm prune juice, increased water intake, more fresh vegs & fruits -- none improved the condition. After taking the 2nd dose of Amitiza 8mcg. there was a bowel movement, with some watery discharge along with normal stool. But since then, the medicine has not produced any regular bowel movements. The doctor said she has had patients that did not find Amitiza effective; I plan to increase the dose to 16mcg twice daily. I experienced no side-effects from the 8mcg. Read More Read Less

IBS, Dr tried lots meds. Gave me Amitiza. It took about one week along with stool softner and fiber pills to go. Now I read my body if I need to add laxative or fiber but always Amitiza. It has been a blessing for someone with a blocked colon.

After having emergency surgery for two Blockages, I developed IBS. I was given Linzees which caused severe diarrhea. Then was given Amitiza tot ake 2 times a day with food. It has made a much more normal bowel consistency, but I still have excessive bloating. I am not going enough when I do go and have used a stool softener for some relief. I have learned that my diet needs improved with fruits and vegetables along with Amitiza. I know drinking coffee has irritated my stomach/digestive system just through trial and error of different things in my diet. I continue to use Amitiza because it works and I think will improve with the right diet. No side effects! Read More Read Less

This drug has made a tremendous difference in my life! The first day or two I had a little nausea and quick heartbeat, but it stopped quickly. I take 1 24 mcg 2x day along with 1-2 doses of miralax per day and life is great. The gastroenterologist who prescribed this for me 4 years ago is my hero. After struggling for 20 years it is terrific to have stomach issues under control. PS, I take 1-3 mg. Entocort per day also- but for the past 2 years, only take 1 pill per day because everything is working well!Read More Read Less
