Truly a "miracle drug." Have used it for thirty years due to Crohn's disease with short-bowel syndrome. As for the cost, contact the manufacturer: Marathon Pharmaceuticals for assistance --- get the contact information from the "Oley Foundation" [excellent non-profit ogranization in Albany, NY serving patients and families who need to supplement their nutrition via intravenous and/or other means ...

This drug has helped me immensely. However, the cost has increased by more than 500%!!! In 2008 the retail cost was $91.43 for 140 ml...in 2009 the retain went up to $552.57 for 140 ml. This is unconscionable. Cannot something be done to reduce the cost of this effective medication?

my mother uses this to controll her diarrhea especially after chemo. She does not have a drug plan the cost went from $29 (approx) to $156. Yet, another case of greed with the drug companies.

I had used Paregoric for a brief time and I thought it was the answer to my pain, but it was discontinued by the manufacturer. I am now using the opium tincture (doesn't taste so good) but the painful stomach symptoms and the diarrhea I experience on a daily basis have greatly diminished. I am so grateful for the relief.

I suffered from chronic diarrhea for 40+ years, was examined by multiple gastroenterologist; underwent every possible test, and tried vertually every drug on the market for diarrhea. After describing my history to yet another GI specialist, he said he knew exactly what was wrong (microscopic collogenous colitis) and prescribed tincture of opium. This drug has been a lifesaver for me. I need only a half a ml. twice a day for relief of my symptoms. It is great to be able to leave the house once again. I am actually starting a new job this week thanks to this medication and my new gastroenterologist!! The drug is readily available at pharmacies (such as Rite Aid) not associated with grocery stores and WalMart. The taste of the medication is offensive, but I find it tolerable by mixing it in a shot glass of orange juice. Cheers!!Read More Read Less

I have taking this for 7 years now, due to Meckels Diverticulum and 4 surgeries for same, removing a lg. section of small intestine, resulting in Chronic Diarrhea for life. It was the last drug given after 5-6 others that did not work. I am at 8ml per day. Most day's this drug works well but at times I still have very lose or out-right diarrhea. Times it does make me sleepy and gives me nausea depending on what I eat, as most food make me sick to my stomach so then opium adds to nausea. It is Very difficult to find some Pharmacies do not want to order at all. It does make my life livable as before this I could not leave the house! If I did I could not eat for 12 hours before a trip. Wish there was other drugs to work as well as this due to its side affects, drowsy at times, dependence and hard to locate. But I must say without it I could not even go to a local store without running to their bathroom! Read More Read Less

I am an ileostomate with short bowel syndrome. My GI prescribed this medication when I became severly dehydrated this summer and was hospitalized due to chronic diahrrea. In the week that I have used this medication (3 drops in water three times a day), it has slowed the loss of body fluids through my ostomy by about one fourth by thickening the stool and reducing the amount of times I need to empty my appliance. It's the only thing I have found that helps. I've tried immodium, loperamide, Kaopectate and metamucil. This is the best thing that's worked for me.Read More Read Less

I have microscopic collogenous collitis. I was mis-diagnosed & put on steroids for Chrones Disease. The steroids worked great for my diarrhea, but they are up my joints due to being left on them for two yrs. This Dr. referred me to another that had a license to dispense narcotics. He immediately started getting me off of the steroids and put me on Tincture of Opium. I have been on it for 8yrs. It has pretty much stopped working. I take 1cc 3x a day. That does little for me. When I take it with Entocort EC, I have a lot better results. That is also a steroid, but it is a lot milder than Prednisone. This disease is debilitating and I am tired of it. Good Luck to you it you have it!! I wouldn't mind hearing from someone that does have it.Read More Read Less
