I had C-Diff caused by taking antibotics prescribed for a sinus infection. It upset the balance of good vs. bad bacteria in my system. The bad bacteria took over my intestines, resulting in pain and explosive diarrhea. After a colonoscopy and other antibotic treatments for 3 months I was prescribed the Xifaxan. The symptoms started to clear within a week. I am on my last week of a 4 week prescri...
Overall this med is ok but I also found an over the counter med for IBS brand name TRP IBS (speller out) therapy. Homeopathic which is fast dissolving & may help if taken as soon as U notice symptoms returning for those small periods of upset

After 9 horrible months of misdiagnosis by an array of doctors and extensive medical tests, A doctor send from heaven suggested SIBO. I was given a breath test, positive for SIBO. This medicine resolved my symptoms. Unfortunately SIBO is chronic but xifaxin works like a charm every time. I am thankful for that doctor and this medicine it gave me life again.

I have taken this drug two times before and could not make it through the entire 14 days but did manage 8 days this time. I took 550 mg. 2xdaily instead of 3 as prescribed. The first 3 days I felt great but then began bloating and constipation but by day 8 was having diarrhea. After it was out of my system felt better. Lasted a few months but then started with diarrhea again.

I'm using Xifaxan for the 3rd time to treat IBS-D. It definitely helps with the frequent, urgent and loose bowel movements. I still get some cramping but I use Bentyl for that. I wish this drug would last more than a couple months...it's sort of a pain to have repeat prescriptions every few months, especially because my insurance requires a pre-authorization and then sends it via a delivery service that requires an adult signature. But at least it is covered now, whereas a year ago it wasn't. The only side effects I have felt are fatigue and occasional dizziness about 30 mins after I take it. Other than that it's very tolerable. If you have IBS-D and your doctor suggests this med...take it. It's the only thing that has really helped and I'm glad this med is available because IBS-D can totally cripple your life!Read More Read Less

I have had chronic diarrhea for years. All tests and procedures show nothing is wrong. I tried Donnatal with no relief. So my doctor put me on Xifaxan. I never had bloating or cramping before just urgent diarrhea. But for the past few days I've had the worst pain and cramping along with bloating and swelling. I'm at a loss as to what to do. My bottom is so sore. I just cry each time I have to go to the bathroom. I'm 45 and I've been like this for 8 years. The past 6 to 8 months is gotten so much worse. Read More Read Less

I buy rifaximin form from Online Pharmacy Canada for $138 USD (550mg - 100 count) which is 3% of the price of this drug in the USA (thank Medicare Part D for the high price). This is lessm than the insurance copay. It is used to prevent the occurance of hepatic encephalopathy. As far as I know this drug is only produced in India. If I do not take the drug I suffer no noticiable effects. In my case, it has been a Meidcaid ripoff of the US taxpayer and insurance companies which pass its cost to the peeople being insured.Read More Read Less

Great drug greedy drug co.

I'm using my second round of treatment with Xifaxan. First course didn't do much but the second a few months later is helping a lot. I don't have the urgency and terrible pain and bloating that I've dealt with for 20 years. It's such a relief to not have to run to the bathroom several times a day. My doctor gave me samples and I'm trying to get an authorization from insurance so i can continue my 2 week course. It's a shame that something that works so well is such a problem to get easily! Even with insurance! I will keep my fingers crossed that the authorization gets approved or the med assistants at my doc office will "find" samples for me. The only side effect I have noticed is fatigue but it's worth it.Read More Read Less

Hospitalized (coma) with H.E. Combo of Laculose and Xifaxan had me cogent almost immediately. Now take 550mg 2Xday and like new. It gave me my life back. $2,200./month is mostly covered by insurance, thank goodness. Handwriting ability has returned after about 4 months. Great drug for me.

IBS has been part of my live for several years. Recently my condition became much worse and I tested positive for SIBO bacterial overgrowth. This medication completely improved my symptoms within 48 hours. Unfortunately it is not covered by insurance and only because my Dr. happened to have samples in his office (which the drug co. no longer gives) was I able to obtain it. Impossible to understand why effective medications are not on the Medicare and other insurance approved lists when so many could benefit. Why?Read More Read Less

This drug has proven to be my miracle. I'd always run towards having hard stools most of my life,at times getting impacted. This changed, however, the June before last, in 2011. My stools started being occasionally bloody, always very loose, with much mucous. I'd even lost close to 50 lbs in about 15 months. Loving the weight loss but knowing it wasn't normal or healthy. I'd had the same gastroenterologist since 1998, with him performing 2 colonoscopies and zillions of testing. He said I had colitis, in which he prescribed nightly Canasa suppositories. My family dr. finally referred me to a new, younger dr. He performed a 3rd colonoscopy finding I never had colitis at all. He said I either had IBS or pockets of bad bacteria in my colon. He gave me enough samples for 7 days of this drug and w/i 2 days, all my pain was gone and for the first time in my adult lifetime, am having normal BM's. No more diarrhea or hard stools. No more needing to take 2 Vicodin every 4 hrs. for the horrible cramping. These cramps were like labor pains or a very, very hard period. Apparently if I get it again, will just need to do another 7 days of this wonderful drug. The only side affect I found was slight water retention, but THAT I CAN DEAL WITH!!Read More Read Less

I took this medication for severe gastritis. It was a complete life saver! For the gastritis outbreaks I take 550mg twice a day for 10 days and I am good to go! The first day I always have some cramping but nothing major. If you have gastritis this is exactly what you need. It takes a good five days to start feeling better.

I started out having my gall bladder removed. Then the pain continued. I took the breathing test and it was positive for bacteria. I started Xifaxan, within 2 days I felt better, then the cramping started. I read the side effects and realized they were the same pains in the gut area as the condition I had. Some other side effects I had were chest pains and vivid dreams. I continued with the med and lived through the stomach cramping for about 3 days after the med was discontinued. Now I feel great. No more pain and I actucally feel hunger pangs and not abdominal pain. After over a year of having stomach pain I wasn't sure if I was hungery or feeling pain. Now I'm sure and I'm feeling good again. Hope this bacteria doesn't come back. :o)Read More Read Less

I am currently taking this medication. I am have way through my prescribed period; I have another week to go. I am experiencing dramatic FATIGUE. I can not seem to stay awake. Is this normal? Has anyone else encounter this during your prescribed period? Any information would be helpful.
