I've had severe chronic pain from arthritis and compressed nerve at L6/S1 for almost 2 decades. I've tried so many treatments and meds--and the only two to give me any relief are, Opana (now yanked in ER form :( )...and Hydromorphone. I take 4mg tid, because of the hypercautious approach my doctor takes per necessity...when I really need about every 3-4 hrs. PLEASE people who do it--QUIT ABUSING T...

Tore a tendon in my ankle, awaiting surgery. The pain is excruciating; oxycodone immediate release or hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Vicodin) are not great, but they actually relieve some pain. I'm on 4 mg every 4-6 hours of hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and I feel absolutely no pain relief what-so-ever and I am afraid to have my doc increase the dose because I'm paranoid about the possibility to stop brea...

On my 4th and 5th knees, including originals, have had bilateral ankle and foot reconstruction. Left ankle did not keep correction. Chronic pain in knees , ankles, and feet. Been taking 4mg 3 time a day for several years. Would not have quality of life without pain control. Feel very blessed that my body has not needed dosage increase. It would be very nice if people who are helped by this drug were not made to do handstands and go thru lots of hoops to receive this. Don't like 'doctor shopping' but because of the attitudes against this drug many doctors will not prescribe.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed 4mg every 3 hours after emergency surgery for suspected flesh eating disease in my left leg. I continued at this dose for the next 34 days I spent in the hospital. It was highly effective, especially if I stayed off my leg. I am now home taking 4mg every 4 hours and it continues to be effective.

In the year 2000, I had Diverticulitis which burst into the peritoneal cavity thus causing me to become sepsis. The surgery was botched thus causing ongoing chronic pain. I also have malignant melanoma. I have had 2 total knee replacements on the same knee in the last 4 years and various other problems resulting in severe chronic pain. Between my Doctor and myself, we tried every pain medication with no luck until he put me on Dilaudid (1-2 tablets 4mg every 3 hours as needed for pain). I have absolutely no side effects and what a blessing it has been having quality to my life again.Read More Read Less

I have bad neuropathy and the methadone that I was on only lasted 4 hours at the most due to my body chemistry. This has worked much better. As a note to all, Twinkie posted the Oxycodone has a NSAID in it- It does not if it is true Oxycodone. Do not talk about meds unless you know what you are talking about!!

I have Chronic Pain Syndrome due to failed lumbar fusions and have a pain pump to dispense most into the intrathecal areas of my lumbar spine. My pain pump ran out3 weeks ago which threw me into withdrawal and, needless to say, the last 3 weeks have been absolutely terrible. If anyone has a pump, make sure you don't run out as, from what I've been told, dilaudid is 10 times stronger than morphine and it makes it worse when you're getting it intrathecally vs orally. It was put to me this way: 1 mg of aspirin leaving the pump requires 300 mg of aspirin orally. I am soon to have my 16th spine surgery and while they're at it (t-spine this time) they are taking out the pump that I've had for the last 6 years. My spine has been giving me fits since 11/1989 and I keep hoping for SOME kind of solution in the near future. Good luck folks.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed dilaudid 10 yrs ago for chronic pain due to a split pelvis, hip dysplasia and kidney disease as it was the only pain killer that was safe for my kidney. Since then I have had a pelvic kidney removed and my hips and pelvis have only gotten worse. I also have stage 4 chronic kidney disease and anyone with this condition knows the chronic pain that goes along with it. I have never had many side effects with dilaudid and its effects on my pain are okay. Enough relief til the next dose. I take 4 mg.three times a day. Anyone who seeks this med should talk to their doc and take the med as prescribed. Don't take other meds on top of this.Read More Read Less

I have pulmonary sarcoidosis, and as a result I frequently suffer from pleurisy; which is inflammation of the pleura (the lining of the lungs). When I breath, and my lungs expand the inflammation causes my lungs to touch my rib cage - this is extremely painful and distressing as breathing is an essential function of life. I was placed on a variety of medications, such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, even NSAIDS. Nothing worked for me, and I felt that I was out of luck and out of hope. My doctor subsequently placed me on 4mg of hydromorphone and a prednisone taper. This worked for me in ways that I thought impossible. I found myself taking less pain medication because the effects of this medication lasts longer and is much more effective for the type of pain that I was experiencing. Rightfully so, I was scared that I would become tolerant to this medication and would require a higher dose and could possibly become addicted. That was not the case. Working with my doctors and specialists my pain is well managed by hydromorphone. I take my medication as prescribed by my doctor and even find that I do not have to take this medication as often as prescribed because its strength. I am proud to say that through the hard work of my doctors, and their listening (and hearing) me actively help alleviate my pain from an incurable and painful condition.Read More Read Less

I have severe diabetic neuropathy in my feet. If it weren't for this medicine, I would not be able too walk or live a somewhat normal life. This drug understanding it's addictive ways, I couldn't imagine life without it.

I had a spinal injury that caused spinal fluid leak when i stood or sat upright. During spinal tap i asked for something for pain. Er doc gave me options to choose from. This was the option i chose. Nurse came in asked, "In stomach or behind?" My mom told me stomach hurts worst so i did behind. She was wrong. Never taking a shot in the butt again. It completely got rid of my pain. I had a hard time focusing on the conversation the ER doc was trying to have with me during the spinal tap. It definitely did the job i asked for.Read More Read Less

Tore a tendon in my ankle, awaiting surgery. The pain is excruciating; oxycodone immediate release or hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Vicodin) are not great, but they actually relieve some pain. I'm on 4 mg every 4-6 hours of hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and I feel absolutely no pain relief what-so-ever and I am afraid to have my doc increase the dose because I'm paranoid about the possibility to stop breathing as this is a huge warning on this medicine, more-so than hydrocodone or oxycodone. I took Vicodin 10/300 for 10 days and then Oxycodone 10mg for 10 days, so I doubt if I have tolerance already. Taking the Dilaudid back to the pharmacy for disposal and asking my doc to please just give me 20-30 mg of Oxycodone instead of the 10 mg I was on. I'd rather have this because Hydrocodone does not come without acetaminophen, but Oxycodone does. Dilaudid works well in a hospital setting through an IV, but the tablets are useless and I will not be taking them after surgery either. Oxycodone with some Aleve should work just fine. Hope this helps. Read More Read Less

I received Dilaudid through an IV to manage the pain immediately after a c-section. It got me super stoned but it didn't do anything for my pain. I HATED it because the last thing I wanted in that moment was to feel high. My doctor later said that Dilaudid worked on the brain to almost distract from the pain, but it never worked for me. I will never ever take it again.

I was prescribed dilaudid along with morphine for back and neck pain. I under went 4 surgeries, 2 neck, 2 hip, it was hell coming off of these pai pills, even taken as directed y body became addicted. now a few years later my pancreas is not producing enzymes to digest my food. I blame these pain meds, while on them I was constipated all the time, I believe that years of meds and constipation led to my pancreas problems. I think they should only prescribe these meds to people in the hospital, not for home use, I also think the doctors should monitor your organ function while on these meds alot better then they do!!!! I blame the meds and the doctor who prescribed them to me, for this life threatening diseases that I am left with to face.... Read More Read Less

It was given to my wife in the hospital for pain they wrongly thought she had. It caused severe hallucinations that frightened her. It is going on her do-not-use list!
