I took black cohosh to ease insomnia, hot flashes, and moodiness brought on by perimenopause. It was a wonder drug for me -- it made me feel like my younger, healthier self again by eliminating all of the above symptoms. I don't know if we're allowed to name brands here, but I took the brand made in Germany since there herbs are regulated and the dosages are standardized. It did make me prone to migraines just like I used to get during the times in my cycle when estrogen was high. Unfortunately, I had to stop taking it because I have tardive dyskinesia that was caused by a serotonergic-dopaminergic reaction to drugs that were mistakenly prescribed for what I believe were perimenopausal symptoms all along, and the black cohosh made my tics worse (prescription estrogen also makes my tics worse). However, if you are blessed enough not to have been given tardive dyskinesia by an incompetent psychiatrist, I highly recommend black cohosh. I wish I could have continued taking it.Read More Read Less

This helped tremendously with the hot flashes, however I did have bouts of nausea and my headaches increased. I have learned that this interacts with other prescriptions that I am taking, so I am going to stop taking the Cohosh and see what happens.

I've been taking it about 6 weeks. My blood pressure is elevated to an uncomfortable level, I am dizzy most of the time and have been eating Advil for persistent headaches. I have gained a couple of pounds since starting it too. I have felt like something is not right for several weeks and just found these side effects. I know now what the problem is. On another note, my hot flashes decreased to almost nothing. But it is just not worth it. I'd rather have a minute or so of a hot flash that feel bad all the time.Read More Read Less

The medication provided me the relief from hot flashes, however the trade off wasn't worth it. I experienced terrible headaches, blood pressure elevation, joint pains, dizziness, and nausea within 24 hours of using the cohosh.
