6 years ago, I was having about 1 gout attack a month in my feet and ankles, which would last for up to 2 weeks. The attacks were so bad I would end up on the floor in tears. I've broken many bones and had sprains due to my athletic lifestyle. The gout pain is/was by far was the most painful of anything I've experienced. I started on 100 mg of Allopurinol for 2 months, but the attacks still came. ...

Went on Allopurinol about 4 years and works great for me, but for the first 6 months of use I have several painful attacks in several joints. It takes up to a year to get the extra uric acid out of your body. I was not told that at first I consulted the doctor and said this was nornal.

I have been plagued with gout since in my 20s. I've tried other medications but have been on 400 mg of allopurinol for 10 years now and not one incidence of gout. So it works wonders for me.

Started taking after 1st gout attack. Had 2nd attack 6 months later & last blood test showed uric acid levels as normal. Based on other reviews it seems you need to take this drug for awhile before it becomes truly effective. no side effects, just a little disappointed in results.

Definite decrease in uric acid levels. However, I'm much more tired than normal, often feel nauseated and recently developed a persistant sore throat and joint pain.

It gave me 103.8 fever, a major rash on my arms and back. I did not want to eat for 4 the four days I took the medication.

Had first gout attack in 2002. Started on allopurinol..took it for 8 years. PCP felt I should stop taking since I had no other attacks. Have now had 3 painful attacks in the past four months caused by increasing dosage of Lasix for edema. Have Stage 4 kidney disease. Starting back on Allpurinol as soon as flare up is controlled. Will take it from now on as it worked for me!!

The side effects of this medicine out weigh the benefits. My son develope a mild case of Steven Johnson Syndrome. I would not recommend Allopurinol to anyone, it should be taken off the market.

This is a miracle cure. Before I was diagnosed my uncontrolled gout was misery - I could barely function. It took about 1 year for the drug to fully take effect. However I'm three years in now with my gout completely controlled and my uric acid is normal. Stick with it - the crystals had a lifetime to build up so it takes a while for the joints to clear themselves. You may have some flare ups during that time.

I have been using Allopurinol for about 4 years and find very few episodes of gout flare-ups since taking. I have been told I could reduce the amount being taken by half but within a couple of days found gout activity had picked up significantly and the corresponding pain pushed me back to the full two pills per day I normally take. I have had gout for about 20 years and this is the closest thing to full relief that I can ever remember.
