6 years ago, I was having about 1 gout attack a month in my feet and ankles, which would last for up to 2 weeks. The attacks were so bad I would end up on the floor in tears. I've broken many bones and had sprains due to my athletic lifestyle. The gout pain is/was by far was the most painful of anything I've experienced. I started on 100 mg of Allopurinol for 2 months, but the attacks still came. ...
i had taken this for gout attacks but found out this drug was taken off the market, please tell me why. thank you. charles moore

I don't know how effective it was as I was nauseaus the entire 7 months I was taking it. It didn't matter when I took it or what I ate with it, just plain sick to my stomach the entire time. I'm now on a regimen of freeze fried tart cherry and turmeric and not a bout of gout in over a year.

I have been on allopurinol for four months. Initially, I had some pretty severe gout flares, but now after four months this has been reduced to some mild attacks every two weeks or so. I wonder if this is normal? I also wonder what causes these attacks. I am controlling my diet carefully, but don't always drink the amount of liquids suggested. I can control the pain with indomethacin, but I know that long tern usage can lead to stomach problems. I'm wondering if the gout flares will continue to be reduced in frequency as time goes on. How long does this take? After six months on this drug I'm hoping I get to where I don't have any issues.Read More Read Less

I have been taking this drug for about three months. When I first started taking this at 300mg per day I had a fairly severe gout attack that lasted 4-5 days, but nothing since. I have had no adverse reactions to the drug as some folks have had. I notice that when I have a beer (very seldom now) I start to feel some discomfort in my feet like the onset of a gout attack. Hopefully, at some point the allopurinol will allow me to have an occasional beer with no symptoms. Previous to starting on this drug I had a gout attack on the average every 10-12 months usually initiated by strenuous physical activity or being in a hot climate coupled with low fluids intake. Therefore, I believe that drinking plenty of water is crucial in allowing the drug to work to maximum effectiveness.Read More Read Less

After 9 months of taking 300 mg once a day, I finally decided to see if "rash and hives" was a side-effect. It is a side effect along with 5 or 6 other things that have been bothering me. Now I need to know how long it will take to get it out of me. Any suggestions?

I had a severe reaction diagnosed as Steven/Johnson Syndrome. Hospitalized for 3 weeks. Effect internal and external breakout. I was in intensive care for 1 week of my hospital stay The first ime in my life that I could not take care of myself. Had to wear diapers. People should be more aware of the side effects this drug can have. Never heard of Stevens Johnson syndrome until it happened to me.
