My mother had a hemorraghic stroke with no prior problems with memory or dementia. Four days following the stroke my mother disappeared and an evil twin appeared. Instant and full-on vascular dementia. I heard about this drug for treatment of Alzheimer's and talked to her doctor about it. He said it was exclusively an Alzheimer's drug and had not been tested for vascular dementia. He agreed t...

I want to write this review in the hopes that it helps someone else. My Mother suffers from Lewy Body Dementia. Out of nowhere she one day got into the car and started driving and the police found her three hours away. We knew something wasn't quite right before but that was the beginning of our real battle with dementia. Since that event her cognitive ability declined immediately and she was ...

My husband was given this medication by his doctor to try to improve his memory. He was put on 5mg I a day. This seemed to work very well. It helped his memory and also made him seem more present. Just increased to 2 a day and seems to be making him loose temper often. Might put him back to 1 a day. Any one else have this problem?

Internist #2 (2012) and a geriatric physician (2013) both endorsed Namenda but I must question their decision regarding this 80 year old patient. Internist #1 initially prescribed the drug in 2009 due to the onset of dementia. Although the professionals maintain the drug is supposed to improve "executive function" I observed this individual was failing to change his urine soaked depends, clip his finger nails and other routine chores in 2012 Sept. In early 2013 the decision was made to stop Namenda despite suggestions Exelon should be given as well. After stopping the drug this elderly male was more attentive in so far as personal care (depends, nails, shaving) so I do not concur with gibberish regarding executive function. I came away with the impression many physicians are content prescribing medications as a "hook" to keep patients returning every 60 or 90 days. Namenda did not appear to be serving a purpose in this particular patient, and I confident Exelon would not have been a prudent decision. Read More Read Less

My mother was given Namenda after being on Exelon Patch alone. We did the month long increase in pills. By end of month, she was sleeping 14 to 15 hours a day if we let her, as well as naps after eating, errands, etc. Very fuzzy headed, and not much emotion. No other side effects, but the sleepiness seemed to be increasing. Took her off the pills and within 2 weeks back to normal. Not sure what doctor and I will decide to do next, as Aricept doesn't have good reviews either. I am calling FDA to report this side effect because it states tiredness, NOT sleeping all the time.Read More Read Less

My 86 yr old mother has been on Namenda for about 3 weeks. I cannot believe how much better she is. She almost acts normal again. She never would take it at home but she is in assisted living now and takes all her medications properly. I think this works for people in the lower stages and probably not severe cases. Most Neurologists give samples to try at first. Mom has had no side effects at all from this.

Been on Namenda four weeks. Up to 20 mG per day. Last few days started recalling seemingly every memory that I have in my mind. Could name every student in my grade school class from nearly 50 years ago. Visual memories are vivid. Could memorize both of my credit card numbers, license plate number and more. Incredible, hope it lasts. I feel like myself again.

My sister lives in an AFH and began using this for, what she felt, was early dementia. She has quite an extensive medical history including MS, numerous physical injuries, surgeries, prescription drug abuse and alcoholism. She is only 59 but appears much older. While she is far from healthy, her Namenda symptoms were a whole new thing. They started gradually over the first 2-3 weeks and escalated rapidly over the following 2 weeks until I asked her caregiver to discontinue the medication. It was not just adverse reaction... I am afraid that she will never be the same. I wish I was being dramatic, but, in 6 weeks, she went from being somewhat independent (ie. I could drop her off in front of a store and she could walk to an electric shopping cart, do her own shopping, and check out on her own) to now, after almost 4 weeks off the drug, she is incapable of doing any of those activities without considerable assistance. We used to go out for shopping and lunch frequently, now she couldn't care less about doing anything. She came to my house for dinner to visit with family from out of town and hardly said two words while here. She is a zombie, gone, vacant. We used to text and call each other many times per week, and now she rarely uses her phone. Certainly not my sister from 3 months ago. If you or a loved one is using this drug (which I would not ever give to anyone!)I would suggest being very observant to changes such as tiredness, tremors, withdrawn and/or odd behavior, and discontinuing it as soon as possible if anything out of the ordinary begins. I am just hoping that my sister comes back...Read More Read Less

My mother has been on this drug (5 mg, twice a day) for just over a month. She has dementia caused by strokes and her PCP thought this might help her short term memory loss. This has been a nightmare! She has lost weight she didn't need to lose and sleeps all the time! She is more confused and weaker than she was and became depressed. Dr put her on an anti depressant but after reading all the other reviews I am taking her off this drug!

Since beginning to take this drug, my mother has lost nearly 40 pounds. I think Namenda suppresses her appetite. In addition to forgetting to eat, when offered food, she says she is not hungry. It is hard to tell if Namenda helps her memory. Her memory continues to decline. The drug facts state that it helps restore normal daily function, but my mom cannot formulate a plan for any but the simplest tasks.

My neurologist prescribed it for cluster migraines and it works incredibly well. I do get some breakthrough migraines, but they are easily remedied with Migranal nasal spray or Sprixx. Before taking Namenda the longest cluster was 30 days. I have yet to experience a cluster on Namenda, and have been on it for 3 months.

My 89 year old mother has senile dementia and was put on Namenda along with Aracept and several other drugs in Oct. 2012. By mid-December she had developed a rash. No one was putting it together with the drugs. Finally stopped Namenda in early Jan. 2012... still had rash, but seemed more alert!? Now stopping Aricept... her personality is even better!? Hope stopping these drugs clears up her rash. Has anyone else experienced a rash with these drugs?
