I started this medicine yesterday. Oddly from the rest of the post I read, my doctor ordered me to take this medication in one dose--4 pills at once. He's very good in his field and has 3 GYN offices he works in every week. He also advised me to abstain from sex for a week and no alcohol and ...that I vaginosis is SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED in the form of traditional, anal and oral sex (if your partner ...

I was on 400mg 3 times a day and experienced most of the side effects. On the last day I had stomach pain and diarrhea so I decided not to continue with it. Not sure if the bad bacteria was gone. I would never take this medicine again.

I was prescribed this medication after I developed C.Diff from another antibiotic I was on. I've been on it for 8 days (4 pills a day) and still have 2-6 more days to go. Other than food tasting different I haven't really had any side effects so far. I was hesitant to try it because I had a reaction to penicillin (breathing), doxycycline (esophagus) and clindamycin (C.Diff). My C.Diff is much better but not 100% over it yet. I gave this 4 stars because I don't know how long I will need to take it and what the final outcome will be, but I am so thankful that it has helped my c.diff. thus far, and with very few side effects compared to what I have already been through. The original reason for needing an antibiotic to begin with was for a really bad dog bite. Read More Read Less

Firstly, it worked and got rid of the smell and infection. However, the side effects are AWFUL. I was dizzy nauseous, and exhausted for all seven days of treatment, and am still nauseous and vomiting after treatment.

I am surprised that Lyme Disease was not on the drop down menu choice since it is prescribed a lot for that. It took away the worst of my bone pain after just a few days. Gave me constipation but that is what enema's are for, :), dry, yucky mouth and increased my appetite for carbs (donut's, bread, etc.) I hate taking it, but also love it cause I feel worse without it. I think it made more more fatigued also and a little dizzy (more than I naturally am.)

I was prescribed this yesterday for a general diagnosis of colitis. I was seen in the ER this past weekend for extreme ovarian pain and they found that my large colon was swollen as well. They didn't bother to find out why, but I was given an antibiotic, that my pcp changed to Flagyl, and percocet for pain. I am still dealing with the ovarian pain (ruptured cysts) and started the Flagyl last night. I didn't sleep all night do to severe heartburn, nausea, sweating, clamminess, and dizziness. The most comfortable I could get was a fetal position. I could not talk, to painful. I took prescribed prilosec (for something else) and 6 tums. After a couple hours it went away to come back again after only an hour reprieve. Today I tried to take it with prilosec and after a meal with bread. I had gastric bypass 9 yrs ago and don't eat much, and esp not bread. 30 min later, no heartburn, but excruciating stomach cramping, clamminess, headache, dizziness, and dumping syndrome too (I did not over eat). I called my Dr and they tried to tell me to stay on it for a few more days. Uh no. Especially when they don't know exactly what they're treating. I haven't been able to do ANYTHING all day and cannot function like this. I have taken this medication before for chronic BV without any problems. But for some reason, I have developed a sensitivity to it. And I con't with ovarian pain.Read More Read Less

The main issue for me with this drug is the taste. It is VILE! I wake up multiple times in the middle of the night because of the bad taste and need to rinse my mouth out and have a drink of water. I have never experienced anything like this with a medication before. It is worth it if it works, but being done with it at the end of the course is reason for celebration!

This medicine taste HORRIBLE!! The side effects are almost not worth taking the medicine. My only other option was to go into the hospital or I would not have taken it.

In dealing with BV, taking Flagyl is the best way to go. Symptoms are gone within the first day or two on the medication. I've taken the 7 day series of the pill twice and I have little problems. Didn't always take it with food, and never had any issues with nausea. The bitter taste of the pill is pretty bad, but completely worth dealing with. PLEASE do not drink any type of alcohol while on this! Even the smallest amount will make you sick.

I honestly don't understand all the negative reviews for this drug. I've been taking it for 3 solid days and have had no side effects whatsoever. I'm taking 500 mg (one pill twice a day) and usually take them after a meal. I haven't had any issues with nausea, dizziness or diarrhea. To the people saying the pill tastes bad, why would it even be in your mouth long enough for you to know how it tastes? I put it on my tongue immediately and wash it down with water or a glass of orange juice, there isn't even enough time to figure out how it tastes because it's swallowed so quickly, it's not a chewable pill. As for those complaining about the side effects when mixed with alcohol, the medicine bottle and packet clearly state not to have ANY alcohol while on this medicine for the entire duration as well as 3 days after completing it. My doctor even reminded me on my voicemail not to have any, including mouthwash and cough medicine. If you drank some alcohol and had to deal with the aftermath that was bad judgment on your part. I'm not trying to be harsh here, just making some observations. The medicine has been working great for me so far and my BV is already starting to go away!Read More Read Less

Symptoms of BV seem better. I am on day 5 and just now read the side affects after getting very sick to my stomach and dry mouth. Turns out the extremely painful neck pain/stiffness I've had along with large amount of bruising, headache and eye pain is from the medication. Per the physician I am stopping the medication and she will prescribe something else to me. Now I can add to my medical history I am allergic to this medication.

Today has been my second day taking the drug. I cant take pills so I crushed them up and mixed with applesauce. I couldnt even taste the pill. I am taking the pill after eating a good sized meal. The symptoms of BV are going away and no side effects yet. Will update on day 7.

I was shocked to learn that this drug causes cancer. I received IV infusion of this drug in the hospital and was sent home with a prescription to continue oral dosing. I picked up the drug and read the patient information sheet and learned that research shows it causes cancer. I'm calling my doctor today to request an alternative medicine. ANY DRUG THAT CAUSES CANCER SHOULD NEVER BE THE FIRST CHOICE IN TREATMENT.

I got an infection in my lower GI because I was on previous antibiotics called Clindamycin. The infection Clindamycin caused is called C. Diff and it is a NASTY infection. In order to rid of the infection, my doctor prescribed me Flagyl 500mg 3x a day for 10 days. If the infection is cleared up by 7 days, he said I would be okay to stop. When being on this medication, the side effects are very severe. Everything tasted like metal, I had a furry tongue and my stomach was so upset that I had trouble eating due to loss of appetite. Overall, I felt so crappy that I stopped after 10 doses (not a good idea). As a result, I need to start another full round of Flagyl. The lesson is when having C. Diff or any infection, take the medication very seriously no matter how painful!! On top of that, I will never take Clindamycin again considering it was the root cause to be getting this infection. People please be ware! Flagyl is a good antibiotic but don't end early nor skip doses, C. Diff is an infection you don't want to come back!Read More Read Less

Ive had a chronic diarrhea for about 1 month and stool tests revealed nothing. The GI put me on Flagyl, Cipro and Albendazol. I had to do the treatment for a 10 day period. The diarrhea did not stop when the treatment ended, but I was feeling much better. The bloating had subsided. Finally a week after the treatment the diarrhea seems to be coming to an end. I have regained some of my strength. I think that getting back to normal will take some time after such a bout with diarrhea. I dont quite know what caused this but I am feeling better. Insomnia was the only really troubling side effect for me. Slight metallic taste in mouth around day 3, but was gone within 24 hrs. Very mild diarrhea, stomach was a bit more acidic than usual but nothing I couldn't deal with. Always took with full meal, had NO ALCOHOL (even mouthwash with alcohol is too much on this med according to my pharmacist) and took every 8 hours with orange Gatorade (helps with bad taste from pill while it's on your tongue). Be gentle with your body on this med. I found that not having caffeine, any NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, etc.) or anything harsh on the stomach lining works best. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while on this med - EVEN ONE DRINK. The med causes the body not to be able to eliminate it from your system and it WILL make you very, very ill. Read the pamphlet that comes with the med. It states this very clearly and it's nothing to mess around with. Overall, my symptoms are gone from the jaw infection (pain, swelling) and I would take this med again for a severe infection - all meds have side effects, but if the alternative is a severe illness or death, it's well worth it to me. You may have to make a few lifestyle changes while on the med (no alcohol or caffeine, as mentioned above) but isn't it worth it for a week or two to clear up a raging infection? I think so... I had already tried one course of penicillin and one course of amoxicillin before this med for a jaw infection and neither of those did the trick, so I'm hoping this has cleared it up completely.
