Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

My mom was put on this about 14 years ago and her blood pressure went up after taking it for a short time. She had never had bp problems before. But they didn't take her off of it or reduce the dose, they instead put her on bp meds and it has been downhill ever since, with her reacting to every drug and her health declining every year, all due to side effects. I've told every doctor she has been to that her bp went up after starting thyroid, but they ignore me and keep giving her the extra drugs she doesn't need until last week when she went in for high anxiety levels and he took her off one of the bp drugs and I suggested maybe he should reduce her thyroid dose too and he did since anxiety goes with getting too much. It's too soon to see if it has helped, but he did do a blood test the day we were in to see where it was that day and she got the report today saying it was too high. Finally! Any of you with aging family members need to watch for drug problems closely, because so many older folks react to them.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with hypothroidism 8 or nine years ago. Inital symptoms were sluggishness and unexplained weight gain (just a general yucky feeling all of the time). The first few years on Synthroid were great! Life was good again. Over time the thyroid levels continued to decline and the synthroid dosage was increased. At first even that was fine, but my two most recent dosage increases just haven't seemed to have any affect on how I feeel. Tired all the time, weight gain, achy & swollen knees and legs, constipation, etc., are all ongoing symptoms that seem to be untouched by the increased dosage. I have been taking a calcium supplement for years and NEVER have I been given warnings not to take the Synthroid at the same time as the calcium. The latest labs show my TSH at .10 (low) and calcium 10.9 (high). Dr says there should be no problem taking the calcium and synthroid together. To me this just doesn't make sense in light of what I have now read on this sight and others. But the real puzzler came when he said that he was decreaing my dosage from 175 mcg to 50mcg. Now if the TSH is low, why would the synthroid dosage be lowered? I'm scratching my head and asking my questions!Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. My Dcotor put me on synthroid. Almost immediatley, I began losing all of my hair. When I reported this to him, he raied the dosage. Within months of using this medication, I lost 100 % of my body hair, including, eyebrows, eyelashes, pubic haor, and the hair on my head. I repeat, I have lost ALL of my body hair. I now suffer from Alopecia Universalis due to Synthroid. Can someone help me??

I originally was on Synthroid but then moved on to Armour Thyroid b/c Synthroid DID NOT allow me to feel 100%! I felt crappy after 2 years of taking it, but then I did my research on Armour and it was a life saver!! But now that it is on back order & no one is sure when it will be back in rotation I've found myself back on this roller coaster called Synthroid. It's HORRIBLE!! My head is in a fog, my mood swings are too often and annoying, my work productivity is starting to become victim and I can't get myself off of the couch. Not even exercising is working, its actually wearing me down. This sucks!! What can I do to help bring Armour Thyroid back into rotation!! And as for all of the physicians out there who don't want their patients on Armour...DON'T TELL ME HOW I FEEL!!! Everyone is different and my situation is unique to me. I don't have to share the same ups and downs as that of Sally or Jimmy out in the waiting room! DR'S LISTEN TO YOUR PATIENTS FOR WE ARE THE ONES HURTING!Read More Read Less

After RAI, I was placed on Synthroid. I took it about a month when I started experiencing allergies due to the acacia filler. It never relieved any of the hypothyroid symptoms for me. I never felt good at all, I had all the side effects such as insomonia, hair falling out, loss of appetite, heart palputations, loss of energy, whole body ached all the time, loss of memory, felt aggetated all the time, irratable, fatigue all the time, really depressed with huge mood swings and generally felt like crap. Blood tests, TSH, T4, and T3's were all in the normal range. I hate this medication since it never helps me feel good at all. Read More Read Less

I've been taking this medication for over one year. No adverse reactions or side effects, no change in mood. I feel perfectly normal. It is surprising how many minor symptoms I had that turned out to be from hypothyroidism and are now gone, such as horribly dry, itchy skin, brittle, thin fingernails, slight weight gain, and one major one--hair loss, most devastating for a female. The only drawback is having to wait four hours before taking vitamins or calcium. I'm really glad my doctor decided to test my thyroid levels, and that the drug works perfectly and doesn't interact negatively with my other meds, including estrogen, blood pressure meds, tranquilizers and mood elevators, asthma inhalers.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosis with Graves disease in 1998. I have been taking meds since that time. I weighed 143lbs. I exercised regularly then. In the last 12 years I have put on nearly 80 lbs. I don't pretend that I am not somewhat to blame for some weight gain but I do believe this drug as helped with at the least 1/3 of the gains. I stopped taking it for 3 months this summer ofcourse that wasn't a good idea. I am back on as of two day ago. Let's see how much more weight I put on. Disgusted.....

new side effects such as swelling, increased breast size, irregular period. I'm only on the medication since April, but would like to switch to the non-generic drug in hopes of reducing the above mentioned side effects.

I was on Synthoid for almost 2 yrs due to a borderline thyroid problem. I began to gain wait and blamed it on the wellbutrin that I take for depression. After much research, I discovered that the natural thryoid med - Armour was so much better, Synthroid is a synthetic and not real but Drs push it because of the pharm companies. Armour is very hard to find, but luckily I found an OG GYN dr who would prescribe it. I cannot tell you how much better I feel and have lost 8 pounds in 9 days. I dont feel hungry all the time like I did on the synthroid. Armour is 1000 times better. Research it on the web and read the reviews Read More Read Less

I have been on Synthroid for almost one year now, due to symptoms caused by Lithium. Seems to be working just fine. I can tell a problem is happening, and an increase is needed, as well as feel the results quickly.
