Hello, I have been using Synthroid for over ten years and find it the best to use. I have never had my dose increased as I follow the SPECIFIC directions for use. Take it at the same time every day (for me, 5 A.M.!)and on an empty stomach--for one hour. I have found, my morning coffee is fine with no cream, or half and half ; a food. I tried the generic form and it did not have the same affect...

I was diagnosed with severe hypothroidism on Monday Jan 18, 2010. My doctor prescribed a two week trial of Synthroid oral. I am a 40 yo athlete who has had a real hard winter. I have been cold and lacking in energy all winter long and have not been able to exercise cardiovascularly for about a month now. I am hoping to get back to normal soon. My normal exercise regimen has been 5 to 6 times a week either biking, running or playing racquetball. I have not been able to do anything other than lift weights and that is driving me batty. I went for a run today and about a half mile in my shins felt like they were going to bust through my legs they hurt so bad. I will update my progression after being on the medication longer.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease some months ago but had symptoms for a year that went undiagnosed. My endocrinologist started me on 112mcg Synthroid and I am my old self: energetic, alert, no pain, active. I continue to swing between high and low thyroid function. Synthroid is being reduced to 100mcg. I have no complaints about this medicine, other than losing all my pubic hair! !

I was dx with hypothyroidism after blood tests revealed a high (but not extremely high) TSH level. My doctor had to convince me to try it, since I have no symptoms, am a normal weight, etc... She convinced me to try Synthroid for a few months to see if it cleared up any symptoms that I didn't know I had. I'm about a week into treatment (it takes up to two for the full effect), and have noticed that I have more energy in the mornings and more color to my skin. I have not experienced any issues with water retention or bloating, weight gain or loss, hair loss, or other side effects. I did flush once after running and looked like a tomato for about 5 minutes, which has never happened. I also noticed that for the first morning or two I felt a little "shaky", but that went away when I switched from high-fiber cereal to a protien-based breakfast (1 egg and 1/2 english muffin). I was prescribed .25mcg (lowest dose). I eat 1800-2000 calories/day and focus on whole foods (whole veggies/fruits, meats, whole grains), but I don't subscribe to any particular 'diet'. I excercise 5-6 times/week at a moderate-high intensity. I will re-post once I've had a longer experience on Synthroid, but wanted to post about my first impressions since there are so many negative reviews out there and it's scary for people who are just diagnosed and are looking for info.Read More Read Less

I had my left thyroid removed due to a large nodule and part of the left side. I have been taking the synthroid for almost 2 months. I still get really tired in the afternoon and evenings.

Have taken Synthroid for 34 years now. Began taking it after radioactive iodine treatment. It works wonderfully. I feel good. Have never had any side effects. I always take name-brand.

I had mine removed in 2006 and have taken the generic version of synthroid ever since. My dr. says the level is correct and its been checked and unchanged for 2 years. The worst side effect is the moodiness. I am normally a very patient person but sometimes I act so out of character being hateful I don't know what to do. I stopped taking it for two weeks and it stopped and within a week of starting back the demon was back too. The Dr swears the dose is correct. I am now breaking the dose in half to see if that helps....Other side affects are achyness, dry skin, can't concentrate, insomnia and weight gain..Read More Read Less

I'm sorry I already posted my review, but while reading these, someone mentioned they can't get armor thyroid, which sent me into a state of panic also because of the bad allergic reaction I had to synthroid. However, Forest Labs are sending out limited 60mg. What I did was get it through a Canadian Pharmacy until it becomes available in the US again. Your ins. company probably won't cover it, but it is an inexpensive drug and I'd pay anything to not go back on synthroid.

I took Synthroid and the generic form for more than ten years. I must admit it took away the fatigue and leveled me out emotionally, but there was a big problem. I constantly, and I mean all day long, would have a rush going through my body, starting in my chest and up to my head. I can only explain it as the feeling you get when you get an adrenalin rush from being startled. I talked to the internist who prescribed it and he said my thyroid levels were fine. When I tried decreasing the amount of Synthroid on my own, the rushes decreased in intensity and frequency, but the lethargy, inability to focus, and overly emotional symptoms returned. After the routine blood work, my doctor called saying my levels were very high and I needed to increase the dose immediately. I went to an endocrinologist and he actually said, "read my lips...your symptoms have nothing to do with the synthroid." So I continued to take it, not realizing there was an alternative. Until I went to an allergist (for an unrelated problem) and asked him if I could possibly be allergic to the synthetic forms. He said of course, and put me on a natural product that has both T3 and T4 and my symptoms stopped immediately. My levels were fine and I felt great. I've been taking it for 10 years now and will never switch. When I go to a doctor who insists I go back on synthroid because my symptoms were unrelated to the drug, that I was just on the wrong dosage, I find another doctor who listens to me. I will never, ever take synthroid or any of the generics again. My allergic symptoms may be very rare, but take heed, doctors don't know everything. Listen to your body and find a doctor who will listen and work with you.Read More Read Less

Weight gain, hair loss, chest pains, and low libido. Although it lowered my TSH to .79, it barely elevated my T3 and T4. My understanding is that T3 is the most effective hormone, and when it's low you'll continue to feel fatigued, depressed, lose hair, and gain weight. I'm now on compounded dessicrated thyroid, and within days my hair stopped falling out. In addition I have lost two lbs within eleven days and I have not had one chest pain. I will NEVER go back on Synthroid!! My new holistic doctor told me that only one of his patient's ever returned to Synthroid after switching, and it was only because of financial reasons. I honestly felt better being Hypo than I did on Synthroid. I think it is a terrible drug!! I'm so happy I took a leap of faith and got off that nasty stuff!! Read More Read Less

My hair fell out when I was 19 and I've been tired for long periods of my life, and off and on have been taking thyroid replacement for years, recently generic levothyroxine. I seem to notice a difference when I go off it, eventually, but not so much when I go on--it's not a remarkable difference. Skin's dry, hair stabilized at "thin", always need more rest, mind seems less clear, but the levels are "normal" so the doctor's not interested in the rest

I have a disease called Hashimoto's Disease and I have been prescribed Synthroid since I was 12 and have founda huge satifaction from the drug. When I first was precribed I was taking 75mcg, then in college 175mcg, now lie, and now back to 150mcg. I had no throid function at all when I was tested and had a lot of problems growing up as a child. Not eating, no body mass gain, depression, excessivly tired, and basically the doctor thought I was seriously ill one day. I believe this drug to be very helpful and has changed my life since I was that boy that did'nt know what was wrong and just thought I guess this is how life is. One thing I do concern myself with this drug is that within the last 4 years, I have had Staph infection 4 times, and get sick at least once every 2 months. I am a healthy man with a backround in restaurant sanitation, and very clean. But the last time I got staph was MRSA, which put me in the hospital for 2 weeks. They wanted to amputate my right leg, and the doctor had no clue where it came from, becaue I had no cut or open wound. I don't know whether this is the drug, or is it that I have a immune disorder. Anyone help me, I'm tired of being sick and getting infected, because I do everything right in order to not get sick or infected.Read More Read Less
