I had been depressed on and off since my childhood. This medication has worked very well to minimize my depression. I began taking 20 mg. 19 years ago. For the first 2 weeks I was tired and a little bit dizzy but I started to feel less depressed. After about 2 months on this medication I was feeling much better and my doctor recommended that I remain on the medication. Over the years it has ta...

This is a medication which demonstrates a gradual change in your behavior. Having been on this medication now for about 5 and a half months, I am starting to see the benefits. I have noted however that I do need to change my thinking habits (negative thoughts towards myself, suicidal fantasies, etc).

Paxil did not improve my symptoms with panic disorder. No weight gain, actually lost about 9 pounds upon starting to take this medication. Sex drive practically non existent. However, going OFF of paxil was the worst part. I felt awful for several weeks, even though I went off of it gradually and with my doctors advice. I haven't had any side effects with Lexapro, but it also has been unhelpful with panic symptoms.

I have recently become VERY depressed and even attempted suicide. My doctor prescribed Lexapro which made me jittery, gain weight and have a very low libido. So, he switched me to Paxil. I haven't gotten the prescription filled yet, but have a couple of questions for anyone who can or will be willing to help. Vanity may be too much of a concern to me, but I don't want to gain weight or have no sex drive; especially since I'm 47, I enjoy sex a lot. How much weight can I expect to gain (an average amount, please) and does it effect sex drive that much? I'd rather be depressed than not have sex or be a total fat ass! Please help by posting your answer on this site. Thank you so much!Read More Read Less

Paxil has caused me to have Serotonin Syndrome. My doctor is weaning me OFF Paxil now,in hopes that this condition will stop. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND anyone taking Paxil...TO GET OFF OF IT ASAP.

I take this medicine for both Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I have seen a major difference in my life. I was a little apprehensive about taking it at first, but I have no regrets now.

The only problems I've encountered are weight gain and low libido. Although these are big ones. Don't know if anything else will work as well though.

After my hysterectomy my physician did not want me to continue with oral hormone treatment after taking them for 5 years, so I was put on Paxil to control my mood swings, anxiety, and hot flashes. It has worked wonderful for this. As long as I take calcium supplements, I can continue to take the Paxil.

I have been taking Paxil for 15 years for general anxiety, social phobia & depression. Paxil is the only drug that works for me. I have tried many others. The only problem I have is decreased libido - it is a little better with the controlled release Paxil. I am also prescribed klonopin for severe situations, which works quickly, but makes me very groggy and I have to sleep at least 8 EXTRA hours the next day....so not too convenient. The only other noticeale side effect is weird dreams - this can be disturbing after a while and sometimes it's hard to remember if something was real or a dream. I stop taking Paxil periodically - because I want my sex life back or I just forget to refill the RX, but I eventually have to start taking it again when the anxiety and/or depression get to be too much to handle. I have not personally experienced any withdrawal issues, though I know others frequently do.Read More Read Less

I recently came "out of the closet" and it was very difficult...I had acute anxiety and panic attacks. Paxil has helped me to return to a normal life and helped me to feel good again. Other than a little weight gain and a little upset stomach now and then, this drug has been a crucial element in my recovery and well-being.

The physical withdrawls you have when you discontinue usage, even slowly, is horrible. They should take it off the market!
