This medication was prescribed, along with Hydroclorothiazide (to help me breathe), in order to offset depletion of potassium as a result of use of the diurectic. Either the diuretic amount was too high, or the sustained release potassium capsule was to low, over too long a time; 24hrs. As a result signs of Gout began to appear in my feet and big toe ie. cramping, pain, and tophi deposits. The Doctor prescribed allopurinal and colchicine (I am scared of both because of phamarcy warnings etc). So I stopped both after 8 days and am taking only potassium-sustained release and some small amounts of cozaar 25mg per day and will check with Dr. A.S.A.P. to see if uric acid levels are back down to normal. P.S. I chose this route because I didnt have any swelling, and pain in toe was not excessive and I have no history of gout. This seemed to be the lesser of the risks. I also had some prednisone (corticosteroids) on hand and took a brief burst (20mg a day x 4days)as soon as the symptoms of gout occured. As soon as I get the all clear I am ditching both the potassium Micro-K and and have already ditched the diuretic. I hope this helps someone> I am believe ans hope that I be ok!Read More Read Less
