The pill is very hard to swallow so I started dissolving it in water.. I have Barrett's Esophagus the pill helps some which is good but I am experiencing some weight loss. I looked up the side effects and that's one of the side effects, is anyone else experiencing this type of side effect?

I am a 60 year old male. I have fought GERD for the better part of 30 years. After my Barrets was literally biopsied out of my esophagus, the doctor put me on omeprazole (Prilosec). I eventually switched to lansoprazole (Prevacid) and have been on 60 mg/day for decades now. I get breakthrough GERD really badly sometimes when I take all of my meds at once. Fenofibrate almost always causes problems. Anyway, I have taken sucralfate as an adjunct to the lansoprazole. These pills are very difficult to swallow. In fact, I cut them in half. After nearly dying from taking a half a pill, I learned that these specific uncoated pills will dissolve to a fine powder in under 5 seconds in water. This how I nearly choked to death. The pill exploded in my mouth as I was swallowing it and it formed a bezoar in my esophagus. In my entire life, I have never had this happen. I was unable to clear the pill and started choking, then my esophagus closed completely. I was within 60 seconds of dying from this stupid pill but managed to force some air into my lungs. This was terrifying. I am filing an adverse drug reaction with the FDA over this. Distributing this pill with absolutely NO COATING should be illegal. I'm still furious about this and will pursue this matter further. People have said that they had to buy the liquid version of sucralfate. You don't need to. Take the pill, put it into water and crush it up, THEN swallow it. I can't help but wonder how many deaths have been caused by this specific drug exploding like this. In water, it falls apart, but the inner parts of the drug remain as a powder. Exercise extreme caution when taking this drug and do NOT take the pill unless it is mixed well in water. Hello dear people, I have been experiencing an atrocious disconfort, and pain, and suffering, with my severe gastritis which practically destroyed my life, for the last FOUR years, especially after the covid hit. I needed help, and I've tried everything (everything), Ppi's (awful), famotidine (ok), rebamipide (uncertain if helped), Bismuth (very weak), cabbage juice ( did absolutely nothing for me), potato juice ( surprisingly helpful compared to all the crap I described above) and NOW SUCRALFATE, my dear sucralfate which saved my life and made me feel healthy again. Don't listen to no one, for me it made MIRACLES. This medicine deserves a statue. Thank you dear japanese for inventing it. Now listen, I take it twice a day (2 pills at a time), one at 2.50 am in the morning, and the other 2, (8-9 hours later) which means somewhere around 11.40 - 12.40 pm, in this scenario my stomach is always empty, and it doesn't really interfere with my life because I am not usually hungry before noon. I am praying to help you the same it did for me. I felt incredible results after third or fourth use, and my gastritis was awful, it wasn't joking around, so this Sufralcate is a medicine send from gods. We people with gastritis, I don't know who we have angered to get such a disease, but nobody, nobody, deserves to go through this crap. I wish you health my dear humans. Read More Read Less

I take this because I have gotten Barrett's Esophagus from to much acid coming up into my esophagus. I get the side effect that I have not seen anyone else mention. When I take this medication after I have taken it, it make me feel like my acid reflux and GERD is worse than before I take it. This usually lasts about for 3 or so hours. I only been taking this since February 9th of 2024. Think I need to go back to the doctor and tell him the side effect it is causing. Does anyone else have the side effect that taking Sucralfate seems to make their acid reflux and GERD worse or feel like it is worse?Read More Read Less

I've had GERD, IBS, lesions in my esophagus.. my drs have never tried really hard to help me other than 40mg daily of prilosec, which doesn't work. I just started this yesterday. I am MIND BLOWN. I havent been without pain in my stomach for at least 4 years. I stayed awake til 1am because I was so excited to take my second dose before going to sleep. It literally made me cry to not have the pain. I had the first full night of sleep. Through the day, it doesnt take all the pain away, my stomach still has a dull ache. I will see the GI in a few weeks. I'm really hopeful that this will bring better news than expected. I've lost 60 pounds and can hardly eat because everything hurts. Today, I've eaten 2 meals in one and the thought of being able to enjoy my food makes me wanna eat my kitchen out of stock ??Read More Read Less

Between the nausea and gas, this pill is a tough one to swallow. (Pardon the pun) I’ve been on it for less than a month and find that it’s very difficult to find the right time to take it based on all the rules about eating/not eating. I take one pill early in the morning before I get up for the day. That often means 3 am. As an educator, it’s very difficult to coordinate another dose and quite frankly, with the way it makes me feel, I don’t want to! I’m not a fan. I’m taking it for laryngopharyngeal reflux and it’s really not working. Read More Read Less

Works great only cons stomach aches and pains on and off throughout the day and night and first four days struggle to go #2 either nothing comes out or I have to force myself to go and I hate forcing since it's bad for you I stopped my strict Ulcer and Acid reflux diet went back to all the junk and sodas and things I shouldn't be eating in hopes it will flush out my system and nothing so doesn't matter if I go back to my old diet or stick to my strict diet nothing passes my stool but then again I have only been taking this since Monday night 4x a day. With acid reflux medication and vomiting and nausea medicine cause I been sick on off for a few years and puking blood sometimes and I feel sick all the time so doc prescribed me that so I'm not puking or keep me from puking.Read More Read Less

This medication was prescribed for me because I have stomach ulcers, the medication works great for stomach ulcers. The problem with it was the side effect, it completely stopped bowel movements for me, and I don't care what I ate, I literally could not get a bowel movement while taking this. One thing that always gave me bowel movements was cereal and milk, milk gives me diarrhea because I'm lactose intolerant. I ate a whole box of raisin bran and used 2 gallons of milk with it, and I had a lot of gas, but still no bowel movement. I finally gave up, and discontinued the medication. How in the world am I supposed to take a medication for 8 weeks and never poop? Read More Read Less

I have been suffering from gastritis and reflux on and off for years. It is due to me drinking alcohol. I went from heartburn to severe stomach pain, bloat and sore throat. I couldn't even drink water. I went to the ER and they gave me this. It's amazing, allowing me to eat and drink water. I am eating very little and have lost 10lbs since this all started. I have a GI appt in 3 days for an endoscopy. The pill is difficult to take. I dissolve in water and had to build an eating schedule around it. I take it 3 times a day. No bad side effects so far. Just a bit fatigued. I am sure it is from not eating. No nausea. I am super careful about what I eat. I have only been taking it a week and is helping me make it to my appt. Read More Read Less

This is as close to a miracle drug as I've ever come. It is absolutely amazing. Only drawback is that it will start dissolving in mouth and almost choke me if I'm not careful. I now just let it dissolve and chew on up. It's not bad tasting and I've grown fond of the taste. Takes like a mixture of corn starch, chalk, and possibly dirt. Hope I'm not anemic.

I’m 28. Im fairly healthy, but battle with GERD. I got prescribed the liquid version of this medication last night after being in the ER with immense stomach pain. Taking this definitely took the edge off, as I’m not in excruciating pain. However, I do feel low energy, nauseas, and dizzy from it. I feel… off… after using it is the only problem. But it helps with the pain.

Forget about dissolving pull in little cup of water. Try this. Place pill on tongue and take a swig of water. As pill begins to dissolve, just use tongue and rub against roof of mouth gently. In 5 to 8 seconds, presto! It’s completely dissolved and ready to swallow and chase with more water. Can easily be done anywhere!
