Just took the injection today...no results yet, but wanted to say the injection part itself wasn't all that painful. If it's the stories of pain that are keeping you from trying this treatment, don't...it's not so bad! I will post again when I start to get some results!

I have "stage 3 arthritis" in both knees. Last year I had surgery to repair a torn meniscus and during surgery the rough arthritic cartilage was "smoothed" (read: scraped.) My rheumatlogist recommended Synvisc One to improve the knee mobility and reduce the OA pain. My first experience was wonderful! I enjoyed 5 1/2 months of activity nearly pain free. BUT the second time the injections produced swelling and SEVERE muscle spasms. After a week of intensifying pain, I began a medrol dose pack of "prednisone" It took a week for the swelling and spasms to steadliy subside. After a month I am almost back to wear I was and am NOW experiencing the BENEFITS of the injections as before.Read More Read Less

I have received two treatments and another one next week. I have had instant relief after the first two and hope after the third injection will be pain free for a year or more. I have felt no side affects from the shots and as a matter of fact my doctor is so good at giving the shots never even felt the needle.

With my first injections last year, I experienced severe pain for the few days. After that, I had some relief from the original pain for three months. I waited, in a lot of pain for 4 months. I just received injections for the second time, and it was so painful the first night, I could not walk, or crawl,I drug myself down the hall to my daughters room to get help to the restroom. I am 49 years old, and have had this problem with my knee since 1992. I have had three surgeries, the last removing most of my meniscus, on my left knee. I injured the meniscus in my right knee, early 2001. It has been a week since I received the synvisc for the second time, and I have been to the emergency room, and to see my doctor twice. I am told I need a replacement, but they want me to wait until I am 60 because the replacements only last 10 years. I believe they want me to wait because I have medicare, and I am disabled. I have a good day about once or twice a month, the rest of the time my pain is about a 7 on a scale 1-10. About half the month, my pain is a 10. It interferes with my life so much, that my depression is just getting worse. I am so tired after 18 years of pain, that I think I would rather do without my leg. Being without pain would improve my quality of life. I would not recommend snyvisc unless you have mild arthritis. They say I have mild osteoarthritis, but also with the meniscus damage, it just doesn't work for me.Read More Read Less

I am 38 and had Carticel in my knee 4 years ago. While it was quite successful, I still have quite a bit of pain from loss of cartilage. I have had my 3rd shot of synvisc this year and am quite happy with the results. There is no more swelling in my knee and I am able to walk pain free. Love Genzyme's work!

I had been getting cortozone shots in my right knee every 3 months for 2 years. Helped with the pain but not the problem. I have arthritis and bone on bone rubbing in my knee, you can actually hear the crunching sound when I bend my knee. I had my first Synvisc injection in March 2010. For the first time in years I couldn't hear my knee crunching! Went back 3 months later for another injection and my Dr. told me that I could only recieve 2 Synvisc shots a year (one every 6 mos.) WHY?!?! It works really well for me and I have found no info. on limitations of the number of shots to be given. My Dr. gives me a cortozone shot in between the Synvisc shots....would rather have all Synvisc shots. It may be that the insurance doesn't want to pay for more than 2 shots....I would pay out of pocket in an instant. Does anyone have any info. on the number of shots a person can recieve to the knee on a yearly basis? Love this Synvisc! Read More Read Less

50 year old female had 3 series of synvisc injections. First 2 times got good relief. Third series right knee got inflamed and painful, doc sent me home with vicodin for the weekend. Monday morning went to ER and found blood clot in my leg and lung - almost died! If you get any swelling get right to the ER as blood clots can form if you're allergic to synvisc - no one told me that. Will never use this product again and I tell everyone I know to stay away from it. Seems the drug can "go bad" if it's not properly refrigerated. I'll get knee replacements before I use any type of injections!Read More Read Less

I've had three rounds of Synvisc injections over the past 5 years and each time I am pain free for about 16 months. The injections for me were virtually painless. I see where others have complained of pain with the injection--maybe I just have a better Doctor.

PAINFUL! I had Microfracture surgery on my knee after an injury at work tore the cartilage. After continued pain at the site of the surgery, my doctor injected Synvisc One. I have had a reaction that is still painful, 5 weeks later. It feels like all around my leg from below my knee about 4 inches to about an inch above IT IS ON FIRE and ITCHES, along with swelling. Not fun. My doctor had me take a non-steriod anti-inflamatory drug that helped a bit, but it was so strong to respond to the Synvisc, I had a severe G-I reaction to it! I see the doctor tomorrow to see what they can do to help from here, but the nurse just was at a loss. BE WARE! Read More Read Less

I am 48 years old male. I had knee surgery in Oct 2007 and have had 3 series of shots. They do hurt at the time but the relief I receive is well worth it. My Doc is trying get me into my 50's before we talk knee replacment. They usually last about 6 to 8 months for me. I highly recommend giving it a try.

I was having a lot of pain in both knees and was beyond the cortisone stage. My doctor recommended Synvisc. I had 3 injections. At first my pain worsened, but after about a month both knees were pain-free and remained that way for 2 years! I am now in the middle of my 2nd round of Synvisc. This time I had only one injection in both knees. I've had quite a bit of pain and some swelling so far, but it's too early to tell if it's going to help this time around. I am trying to remain optimistic! But if you haven't tried it, I definitely would give it a whirl! It sure beats surgery.Read More Read Less

I was told nine years ago I needed a knee replacement but due to husband's illness could not have surgery. A year ago I had a series of three injections in my right knee. The shots were painful but did not have any side effects and received quiet a lot of relief from knee pain. Second time around different story. This time decided to have both knees done but had severe pain and swelling especially in my right knee which was the second time for that knee. The injections were so painful in that knee I only received two injections. The left knee received three injections. After the last injection in the left knee the next day I ran a temperature of 100.3 and did not feel well also had chest pain. It has been three days now and the temperature is gone but still am having some chest pain. The left knee is still swollen but is getting better. The right knee is now about the same as before the injections. I am hoping the injections will help, hate to think I did this for nothing.Read More Read Less

7/4/09 stepped in hole at cookout and partially tore manicua and incurred acl damage on left knee. Doctor recommended exercising the knee at the gym. Followed up with X-ray and MRI which showed the above damage. 9/21/09 had orthascopy surgery to clean out debre and repair acl. Inbetween time took PT 11/9/09 had a series of synvisc injections in each knee for three weeks. Beginning of downfall. From that point forward knees continued to be swolled and painful. Each doctor's visit started with him extracting a substantial amount of fluid from both knees. To this day they are stiff, painful, have a feeling of pressure and are still swollen and inflamed. These things didn't occur until I had the synvisc injections. Synvisc doesn't agree with everyone and it's not for everybody. If you get one injection and it doesn't work STOP. Follow up on whether you've had a reaction to it. Read More Read Less
