I have a history of diverticulosis. Twice now when food got trapped in the intestine pockets, I have been prescribed Lactulose. When I asked how this worked so quickly to eliminate my pain, the doctor explained this medication acts as a magnet to enter the pockets and then eliminates the rotting food particles trapped in there. It creates moisture and sends it on its way thru the intestines where...
MY DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED THIS FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS! I HAD TO INCREASE AND INCREASE THE DOSAGE FOR IT TO WORK, SO NOW I HAVE TO TAKE THE STRONGER LINZESS WITH IT. IT DOES GIVE ONE GAS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT CONTINUED USE OF A LAXATIVE WAS BAD FOR US? WHY DOES MY DR. KEEP ME ON IT FOR SO LONG? BECAUSE I'D NEVER GO WITHOUT IT (I HAVE A TWISTED COLON) AND NOW I THINK I HAVE A BLOCKAGE…….BELLY...

I took this with the advice of my pharmacist after being unable to have a bowel movement for 9 days. I developed internal haemorrhoids after a hard stool and the pain of trying to push another out was unbearable for me. Even when using a steroid cream and paracetamol, I got the urge to go but couldn't get through it. This medication works gently and effectively. It took me taking 15ml in the morning for me to go in 36 hours. I took another 15ml this morning and went within 3 hours and my stool is much softer than yesterday's. I feel such relief despite still dealing with the swelling and pain of haemorrhoids, my symptoms are more managable now. I will be using this for up to a week to make sure I stay regular and comfortable for now. The only thing that was uncomfortable was the bloated belly and excess gas. It's a small price to pay for relatively quick relief from constipation. Remember to keep plenty of water next to you and eat fruits and veggies as the water you consume is what makes this medication work best! Read More Read Less

After 5 days of not visiting wash room, I was getting panicky . Doctor just suggested lactulose - after 5 hours of taking 30 ML as the first dose it worked like magic - clean and neat - certainly a life saver !

So my girlfriend was suffering from chronic constipation to the point of it being painful. So the doctor prescribed Lactulose 10gm and after only one dose and less than an hour and a half, she was on the toilet and it was flowing. All I gotta say is this stuff works .....prescription only so I'm never gonna try it but from what I saw and her experience, she begged me to post about her personal experience. And she gives this medication all 10s out of ten.

I have developed an intestinal disease about 2 years ago (Sibo-C, IBS—C, new food allergies, histamine intolerance, debilitating pain and cramps). I have tried many laxatives (colace, miralax, senekot, senne, magnesium, linzess, olive oil) and pain meds , all of which had either poor effect or only temporary relief and nothing was working on the pain itself without side effects.
Then a new GI doctor prescribed lactulose. I took 10-15 ml twice a day. Pain relief was felt after a few days. Got a lot of pressure in my colon for a week as it was hydrating and moving what I believe are fecalites (trapped stools that have dried out). After the detox period I have to say I have about 90% relief of the pain. I am also having less painful defecation and can practice relaxation of my pelvis during a bowel mouvement instead of straining.
Overall amazing drug. Very little side effects and not unhappy to have flatulences that are actually getting out instead of being painfully trapped in my over-cramped intestines.
Highly recommend for people suffering sibo and IBS-C Read More Read Less

Suffer from constipation unless I stick to a very very high fibre diet , which isn’t always possible. Have to turn to lactulose more than I would like , but glad it’s available. The taste is cruel- I had to take some today and it gave me shivers down my spine. I take 50ML in one go as I need immediate relief. After about two hours, expect a bowl movement. Then, expect absurd amounts of foul smelling gas in the next 6/7 hours, along with more trips to the loo. Consistency gets more and more watery as time goes on. Tip: take on a weekend when you have no work, or at a time where you have at least 12 hours alone in your house! Bloating is also a side effect for me, very unpleasant but is gone the next day. I’ve been taking this medication a bit and it has somewhat helped… at least I go more than I was before. I’ve tried linzess, trulance, amatiza to no avail. I’m having a hard bowel movement about every other day. I still have to strain a lot in order to get it out, but it’s better than having maybe one bowel movement a week. I will say it gives you a lot of gas… I recommend drinking LOTS of water. The stool is still very hard for me even after drinking plenty of water; but to have any luck you need to be drinking even more water than it suggests on the bottle. The flavor is absolutely foul and the texture is like swallowing gel, but at this point I’ll take whatever I have to in order to go!Read More Read Less

I was prescribed 30 ml 2x a day....I was only able to get about 20 ml down, due to it's sickening sweet taste. No worries, though...5hours later, the "bottom fell out". It's now 20 hours after the one dose, and I just had my 8th trip to the bathroom. At this point, it's just mainly clear liquid, but I can attest to it cleaning a person out. I had to take it due to not being able to drain during my peritoneal dialysis exchange, and that was due to my full intestines blocking my catheter. I sure drained today, though! And everyone is definitely right about the copious gas that goes with it! I'm STILL pooting away. They ought to rename this stuff "Colon Blow".Read More Read Less

I was so constipated and had to go to the emergency room for help. After 2 soft soak enemas little came out but was still constipated. So they gave me lactulose to take for 5 days. I went as soon as i started taking the medicine. I did gave bad gas, bloating and stomach rumbling. Stopped after 3 days as it was sending to much pressure to my bottom. I feel tons better now.

I have cirrhosis. Had a T procedure done. Dr felt I was young enough and my liver would still filter enough toxins. She was wrong. Lactulose solved the encephalitis issue. Cleans your system thoroughly. Without it I would likely be institutionalized or pass on if it resulted in a coma. Great medication for my case.

Had major surgery and still deal with Carcinoid Cancer and have bad constipation. After 1st dose of Lactulose I experienced Severe cramping in upper to mid back area - I thought I was having a heart attack! Eventually it did help with constipation but who wants to go thru that? I found a daily drink of home brewed Kefir Water works naturally and quite well. If I have any more issues I will try Olive Oil! Great advice, go natural.

I suffer from Liver Disease so I accumulate high (according to blood tests, "critical") amounts of ammonia in my blood. I used Lactulose early on as prescribed, but also was given Xifaxan, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which does the same thing PLUS it treats IBS-D, which I also have! Unfortunately, Xifaxin is super expensive, which is ashame, since it treats BOTH IBS-D

This medicine works as advertised. However my doctor never told me that olive oil could do the same thing. Realizing the strain on the liver and kidneys that follows from a long-term usage of laxatives, I started taking two tablespoons of olive oil every morning into an empty stomach and I have a bowel movement every day. (Of course this means that I watch out for fats throughout the rest of the day). Olive oil has saved my kidneys, my liver, and it has saved me.

This medicine has worked at keeping my ammonia levels down, but taking it twice a day for 1 year now and am still trying to adjust to going to the bathroom so much and nit having the ability to be too far from a bathroom is so limiting on my lifestyle. I do have an abundance of gas and I do take it with OJ due to the taste. For me it is better than the alternative. I take this with xifaxin

I have hepatic encepalopathy (brain fog caused by liver disease.) My doctor wants me to take it with another drug. The lactulose is sickly sweet and thick. I have problems keeping it down, it's so gloopy and sweet it makes me vomit. Also, gas has becone an issue. I do think it's helping with the brain fog issues though so I probably keep taking it. I hope somebody invents some other drug that isn't sick making.
