I'm writing this review to set the record straight. First of all, I'm a 20 year old college student who has never had a child before. My doctor and I made the decision to go with Mirena because of complications with the birth control pill OrthoTriCyclen Lo. After reading many negative reviews about Mirena- I was very hesitant to go through with getting it. I was so nervous I delayed getting ...

I had mine inserted March of 2006 and have been having headaches ever since. I did not have periods only little spotting every once in a while. I loved it except the headaches. My OBGYN says that there is no way it could be the IUD. However, I've been to every other doctor and they believe it is the IUD. So I had it taken out yesterday. I have a slight headache today, I am hoping that it is just after effects. Oh also I gained 40 pounds, which I am now trying to lose.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted six years ago to reduce heavy irregular bleeding despite being on the pill. It was painful for a few minutes on insertion but then no problems at all. Periods dropped to 1 light day every 8 weeks then stopped when I started having chemo for breast cancer 12 months later. I kept it in because the Tamoxifen I was put on can cause thickening of uterine wall and Mirena reduces this so they cancelled out. Saw a different gyno after 5 years to have it removed but he wanted to do it under general anaesthetic! GP suggested to wait till own Gyno was available; he took it out in office last week with barely a twinge (one good cough!) I have read lots of reviews and it seems some people are unlucky or very sensitive but I loved it.Read More Read Less

My doctor suggested this b/c of endometriosis, and my inability to remember to take the pill. I was tired of forgetting and worrying about getting pregnant. Putting it in was nothing. I had already had 2 children and I guess my cervix was ok with it. No pain whatsoever, no dizziness, no cramping. I did have moderate cramping for a few days afterward. My periods have been irregular, I have head headaches (which are sometimes really severe) which I never had before, acne which I had never had before and cramping which I was already used to from the endo. Even with the acne and headaches I still LOVE my mirena. It is SO worth it not to have to worry about getting pregnant. My husband has never felt the strings and I check each month after I have my "period" to make sure they are there. Periods are so light I sometimes don't even have to wear a tampon or pad. I only notice anything when I go to the bathroom but no other time. I do cramp a lot but I can handle that with some ibuprofen. I would highly recommend this to any women who just hate the pill like I did. I love not having to worry about anything. It is so great!!Read More Read Less

I've had the IUD for a little over 4 months and I love it! My sex drive has went way down but it keeps the babies away. When getting it inserted there was little cramping but I have not had a period in over 3 months! I'd recommend it to anyone who still wants kids but isnt ready.

I had this put in 6 weeks after I delivered my first baby and I did hurt quite a bit, and I blead for a month, but I think it was worth it. I'll take the irregular periods to an unplanned pregnancy.

I've had Mirena for over 1 yr. The only bad thing I can say about it is the random cramping. I spot once a month, but do not have a true period. Getting it put in, so far, has been the worst part

it was extremely painful to have put in, then i had shooting pains for quite sometime. when i got it checked the dr. could not feel strings so after 2 ultrasounds i had to have an xray where they found it completely outside my uterus. i now have to have surgery to have it removed!! i would NOT recommend this to anyone!!!!

I had Mirena inserted on December 19, 2007... The insertion pain was beyond what I had expected. The pain was unbearable and took two insertion attempts to get it right. I had mild cramping afterwards but when I got home... I was ready to rip it out myself!!! The pain felt like full labor pains. Now 21 days into it I have cramping and spotting. In addition, I thought all was well when I checked and felt the string, then a week later no string. Also, I have a diminished sex drive and the sex that I have is uncomfortable. This morning I felt sharp (stabbing) cramps on the right side and now nagging cramps on the left side. I have always had a 3 day light period with literally one or two mild cramps. Since this is all so new, I am going to hold out.Read More Read Less

I had this put in because of very heavy periods a little over a year ago. There were 2 attemps because it was so painful to put in. I had my period for 3 weeks then stopped for a week and the cycle continued. Under Dr's advice to give it time, I have. Now 1 year later I still have daily cramping, heavy bleeding, weight gain, and mood swings. I get my period every 2 to 3 weeks. This did not work for me at all. I am having it removed but I am affraid of the pain I will feel when they take it out. Even though my periods were heavy before at least they only came once a month. Read More Read Less

I had the mirena put in on Dec. 6th, I went in two weeks later for a follow up to ensure it was in place. To my surprise it was no where to be found. I had an ultrasound, still not there. Then I had a CAT Scan, and they found it. The mirena has migrated completely outside of my uterus into my lower left pelvic area. I am having full blown surgery on Jan 8th to have it removed. This has been a complete nightmare, I would reccomend that everyone consider this risk before opting to use this device. Read More Read Less

I got it put in over 8 months ago, my ob/gyn had an awful time getting it in and it hurt terribly. After the awful insertion,I bled for an eternity but started losing weight like crazy. Sex drive is barely there but I do it anyway:)

Insertion of the Mirena was extremely painful. I think it was worse than having my baby. It took to doctor three tries to get it were it needed to be. Afterward I immediatley started to spot. About a week later I started my period and it lasted for 3 1/2 weeks. Stopped for a week then started again. Now I start and go for a week, stop for a day or two then go for another week. I have awful cramping, moodiness, extreme tiredness, no sex drive at all and heavy periods. Its frustrating because before my period was always very regular and light. I'm still thinking of having it removed but my doctor thinks I should wait a few more months. Read More Read Less

I thought this was the miracle birth control...but after 2 years, all of the sudden I've gained 25 pounds and am starting to feel the psychological effects. The same thing happened to me while I was receiving the DepoProvera shot. I'm having my Mirena removed. Too bad... It really was great while it lasted.

I had Mirena for 1 month. I was crabby and my pelvis hurt. There were 3 straight weeks of heavy bleeding so I begged the doctor to take it out. It's only been a couple of days now, but my bleeding has gotten worse after it's removal. I really wanted it to work too. I was excited for fewer/shorter periods and thought free birth control.

I decided on Mirena after my 2nd birth and all and all it is great except for the few side effects. After the insert I had dizzy/faint/nausea and extreme cramping(that felt like a peaking contraction) for about a constant hour. I do have headaches & moodiness but had them before Mirena. Sex drive has gone down hill. Vision change comes & goes but can't pin-point it on Mirena(may be blood sugar level which Mirena can be a culprit). Spotting periods. Not having to worry about getting pregnant or missing a pill-AWESOME! I will be giving Mirena a 1 yr. chance unless my doctor says different. I am going into my 5th month trying.Read More Read Less
