I'm writing this review to set the record straight. First of all, I'm a 20 year old college student who has never had a child before. My doctor and I made the decision to go with Mirena because of complications with the birth control pill OrthoTriCyclen Lo. After reading many negative reviews about Mirena- I was very hesitant to go through with getting it. I was so nervous I delayed getting ...

I cannot express how great having the Mirena IUD has been! As a women who is as fertal as they come it has been a God send. 3yrs and no pregnancies!! I also haven't had a period, some light spotting once in a blue moon but that's it! The only downside is that it hurts to be put in and was put in right after having my last child. I have been on the pill, the shot and wish I choose to do the IUD sooner rather then later. And have to say that some women's reviews stopped me from getting it sooner. Now I know all women are different but glad I listened to my doctor! At 39 and 5 beautiful children it was the best choice for me. And for it to last 7yrs without doing a thing and being not having to worry about taking a pill or shot is priceless!!Read More Read Less

The only bonus is that I haven’t got pregnant but then I now rarely have sex because of the constant bleeding I have since having the coil. Can’t wait to have it removed! My mood is all over the place, constant pain in breasts and abdomen. Wish I never had it

I have very heavy and painful periods and tried the birth control pill but it didn't work so as a last ditch effort before going to college my OB/GYN convinced me to get Mirena. I was hesitant but desperate so I went through with it. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that it didn't hurt at all to insert. I've only had it for a month and a half and I'm already taking it out. It gave me huge ovarian cysts, one of which ruptured and sent me to the E.R. Worst pain of my life, I could still feel it after morphine. The worst part of it is that my doctor never mentioned cysts being a side-effect. I'm also covered in red-itchy rash. I cannot wait to get this out. This might work for you, but PLEASE PLEASE read the possible side-effects before making a decision. If you feel it's not right for you don't hesitate to take it out. Mirena DOES work BUT, you have to be willing to give your body the recommended amount of time (3-6 months) to adjust. BEFORE Mirena I experienced heavy periods that would cause me to stay home the first 3 days of my 7-day cycle. Staying close to a bathroom was a must to avoid embarrassment from bleeding through a tampon and pad in as little as 2 hours. AFTER 6 months of having my Mirena IUD I was overly satisfied with my results. It has been 1 year since insertion and I only have very light periods now. I no longer have to plan around my cycle and I can go outside without worrying about soaking through my pants. NOW here is what the GYN fails to mention. INSERTION: I did take ibuprofen and still experienced excruciating pain (similar to contractions). Very fast process and the pain was 3-7 seconds. For the first 3 months, I regretted my decision to get this IUD. I was miserable. I had the worst cramps EVER, migraine headaches, and nausea multiple times a day. Also, I bleed (lightly) for 45 days nonstop. A couple of days later the nonstop bleeding would return. I hated it and sex was not even an option for about 3-4 months. A year later I still experience headaches and cramps from time to time (ibuprofen usually helps). Nausea eventually went away after 3 months.Read More Read Less

I have had the mirena for 7 months now. Just about it. It has been horrific. Crazy heaving bleeding yet. Terrible cramping. The blood loss makes me extremely tired. I have an appt in 2 days and am going to have it taken out. I have had so many health issues since having it put in. I can not say for sure the Mirena is the cause of all my issues. I have been to so many drs appts, and tests done. I have dizziness, vision problems, fatigue, brain fog, weight loss but clothes feel tighter. I am hopeful once this thing gets out of me then my other health issue will clear up. I have an appt for nuerologist, opthalmologist, another ct scan, more blood work. It's possible I have got something else going on... Read More Read Less

I’ve used Mirena for 13+ years and Kyleena, which has the same hormone that Mirena has, except way less. Mirena has 52mg and Kyleena has 17mg. Kyleena is also smaller and made for people that do not have heavy periods. Insertion is a bit uncomfortable but nothing too bad and it’s a very good form of birth control, had no negative side effects. Had it put in after my four kids and no problems. I would still get a period every month on time for four days, but it was so light I did not even need a pad. Just to let everyone know, the one time I had Mirena inserted and I bled/spotted for one month straight, I had a feeling something was wrong, even if the doctors tell you it’s normal, get a pelvic ultrasound done, mine was tipped digging into my uterine muscle, or somewhere in there, causing ABNORMAL BLEEDING. Got it taken out and put in again correctly by a gynaecologist and no more bleeding. Bleeding stopped, only came when periods come and that’s it. I’d get a little moody during period time, but that’s the same for me, even when using nothing. I’m so surprised that most hate Mirena so much, it works so well for me, but everyone is different. I’ve had mirena for almost 1 year, I’ve had pregnancy scares because of not having a period and some cramps, also my nipples recently felt sensitive and sore to touch, so every scare(total of 3 or 4) I’ve taken at home pregnancy test, always been negative! MIRENA WORKS :) once in a while I have my doctor make sure it’s there. I can feel it sometimes but other times I don’t and I can’t feel the strings. I have deep cervix so that’s why. I have had 6 pregnancies in the past 8 years, I am FERTILE MERTLE. I took a plan B pill years ago( not on mirena) and I got pregnant with twins! ?? MIRENA WORKS. I have some irregular periods but for the most part no periods. Discharge a lot but it’s normal my doctor said it’s ovulating. Every woman’s body is different, I have gained weight after having my twins, I don’t think it’s from mirena. Because I recently lost 43 pounds. MIRENA WORKS!Read More Read Less

I'm healthcare worker and also a PCOS patient. Mirena was recommended to me for years but I was always afraid as I am nulliparous. I took 2 ponstan and 2 paracetamols before having my IUD inserted. I was offered Cytotec but declined it. The insertion itself I would say was uncomfortable as the sound was inserted but it wasn't too bad. The actual insertion was the painful bit but it only took like 3 seconds. Discomfort and cramps was worst for about 1-2 days after but controlled with pain meds and these symptoms came went away after 1 week. The brownish discharge is common and that happened to me for about 2 weeks. I would say I am pleased now that I have it as it helps with my lining ( irregular menses for years because of PCOS) as well as a contraceptive. Read More Read Less

I’m not sure if the mirena will work for me as I’ve just gotten it yesterday, but I wanted to leave a review because my experience was totally different from what I’ve heard. I’m 18 years old have never had any sort of pelvic exam or anything like that done, I’ve never had a kid, and I’m not sexually active. I was really scared to get it because of all of those reasons but mostly because people say it’s excruciatingly painful, but I didn’t think so at all! It took like 1 minute to put in and it hardly hurt at all, I didn’t even experience any cramping afterward! So if you’re hesitating because you’re scared, I’d say give it a try. Read More Read Less

It stopped periods but it was disastrous in every other way. It's a foreign body, in your body. And what does your body do? It attacks it...which spills over to itself. Now I'm left with an auto immune condition on part of my reproductive system. I regret getting this device.

Has completely ruined my life. I had endometriosis and was told I could no longer take the contraceptive pill due to age and that the Mirena was my only option. I wasn't told anything about having it fitted. The pain was so excruciating I threw up and passed out. I've broken bones before now, on a scale of 1 to 10, pain level of a broken bone would be a 1 compared to the 10 of Mirena fitting. I suffered continual bleeding, suicidal depression, constant urinary infections and resultant kidney infections. After 3yrs of basically being told removing it would not be in my best interests, I finally was allowed to have it removed. I instantly bled profusely for well over 8hrs. Nothing compared to what I'm suffering now. Since removal I have been diagnosed with Adenomyosis and several fibroids, one of which is 12cm diameter. None of this was a problem before the Mirena but appeared immediately upon removal. I now bleed constantly, usually for around 3-4 months at a time with a 1-2 week break inbetween. The bleeding is so heavy that I have to use maxi-protection night time incontinence pants which I bleed through 4-5 times a day. I also pass 10+ larger than golf ball sized blood clots daily. I'm constantly severely anaemic and have had to have regular life-saving blood transfusions and iron infusions. The reason I have refused hysterectomy is because due to this experience, I have absolutely no trust in any operational procedures plus I am 51 and praying that menopause starts soon. I will never trust any medical professional ever again after this, even the blood and iron treatments cause me severe anxiety and panic attacks. I just wish I could have my life back to how it was before the Mirena. Endometriosis was a minor inconvenience compared to the hell I'm living through now.Read More Read Less

I just got it today at my postpartum appointment, it’s good for 6 years, it wasn’t painful at all while my OB put it in very quick process. Slight cramping for about 2 hours and now I feel fine! Slight bleeding but I also got a PAP while getting that in so that is probably why! I will write another review about It in the next few months how I feel!

Insertion did make me want to throw up, such an odd pain and a bit worse than I was expecting. It only took about 1-2 minutes though and instant relief once it was done. I was crampy for a couple hours afterwards. I felt nothing by the next morning. SO WORTH IT. I already had a very light period and this has made my period disappear completely. This has been my favorite form of brith control and I've been on most of them.. pill, depo shot, bar implant(this one did not work for me at all).

I’ve had the Mirena IUD in for 4 years. It was easy to put in, took about 1 minute. Slightly uncomfortable while the Dr put it in but I felt fine after. I went on it not only for birth control but also to help with cramps and heavy bleeding. My heavy bleeding did cause problems at first. Twice the Mirena came out when I got my period. So I stopped trying it until a few years later after I had another child. I talked to my doctor about it so he put me on the pill for 3 months without taking the pills for when you are suppose to be bleeding. I bled the entire time I was on the pill but it wasn’t heavy and the Mirena stayed in. After that, i haven’t had a real period. I’ve had very light spotting every few months but no cramps. I’m happy with Mirena and plan to use it again after the 5 year mark is up. Read More Read Less

I've had the mirena for 5 months now and the pelvic pain and random sharp pains are awful. I have headaches almost every day and this didn't start until about at the 3.5/4 month mark. I don't recommend it to anyone.

I just wanted to pop a review on here, prior to getting my IUD Mirena all I could find was horror stories. So this is for all the girls contemplating getting it - everyone has different stories but the ones writing reviews have had bad experiences, there is so many people who love it ! My experience- i organised a consultation with my female doctor I trust, this eased all my worries I got from reading reviews. The insertion was absolutely painless, small amount of numbing cream was used but there was no pain. No fainting, no bleeding, & I could drive home. 6 months on - I have had minimal bleeding since. Periods are only 2/3 days long and very light. Considering my period used to cause painful cramping and super heavy, this is a very nice change. My partner cannot feel the string, nor has it caused any issues through intimacy. I have experienced no side effects. So much easier than the pill, get it put in & forget. Don’t rule this out due these reviews talk to your trusty GP! Read More Read Less
