I'm writing this review to set the record straight. First of all, I'm a 20 year old college student who has never had a child before. My doctor and I made the decision to go with Mirena because of complications with the birth control pill OrthoTriCyclen Lo. After reading many negative reviews about Mirena- I was very hesitant to go through with getting it. I was so nervous I delayed getting ...

I am 48 years and have had Mirena for 5 years which helped me greatly with my heavy periods and Iron levels were so low that the doctor said i would need a blood transfusion. The first year I had all the after - effect symptoms which gradually tapered . I could travel around and go to work with much confidence without running to change whenever I had my periods. However often i had to have a thin liner often. Iron levels were great after.

Had the Mirena put in at age 18-20yrs. Dec 2020-2022. It completely CHANGED MY LIFE FOR THE WORSE. It started with insomnia. Followed by extreme fatigue. Then depression & just overall blah and unhappy, zero energy to do anything much less exercise. Got sick a lot too. It was the height of Covid and my first year of University was all online so I chalked it up to the blues about not being as social. Fast forward 1.5-2 years I had gained weight (thought it was the freshman 15), had bad skin all of a sudden never had acne issues before. Then I started to get headaches daily and upset stomach probably from the Advil use for the headaches. This demonic device causes intracranial hypertension. It wasn't until this past Christmas I came home and my Mom was SHOCKED to see how debilitated I actually was. I couldn't get out of bed and was tired all the time. My Mom then said "It's that IUD I bet. Every since you had that put in you've change and are now a shell of a person you once were. This is NOT normal" With that I booked an appointment to get rid of it ASAP. By January 5th 2023 it was removed. I called my Mom up about 5-6 days later and said OMG I'm having the most VIVID DREAMS. That's because for the first time in years I can sleep deeply for long stretches. No more popping melatonin at 18 years old. It was the IUD not my social media use as my Mom accused me of. The weight I gained is coming off and my skin has cleared. I have energy and the cloud has lifted. I re-joined the gym and have the energy to workout. I worry cause I still get headaches and hope there was no permanent damage and getting my eyes checked now. Please do you research this is not worth the problems. I was given sleeping pills and antidepressant pills at age 18-19. My mom didn't want me to take them so I didn't. I suffered for 1.5 years wondering WHY am I depressed and can't sleep. Removing it has changed my life. I'm happy and PRODUCTIVE. The energy is back & I'm feeling more myself everyday.Read More Read Less

I am 66. IUD was placed to prevent recurrence of uterine polyps/post-menopause bleeding following my 2nd D&C to remove polyps. Horrible experience hormonally - anxiety, nervousness, over-heated, mood swings, continued bleeding. Had it removed after 8 weeks. Now dealing with residual symptoms as my hormones settle back to baseline. I'm too old for this nonsense. The surgeon was zero help as he did not warn me about side effects.

I had the Mirena put in August 2021. I have gained a large amount of weight of which most of it is around my belly and even though I train for marathons and triathlons followed the Optifast Diet, the weight will NOT budge. Not even calorie deficit has helped me loose any weight and it keeps on piling on, pound after pound. I've been to dieticians and specialists and fobbed off and told I am getting older now and can't expect to look like a 20 year old anymore. I have bloating and water retention all over, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, periods that are painful and look like dirty blood. Acne on my neck and hair loss. Not to mentions migraines that have me blinded and vomiting from pain. Ongoing numbness in my left leg and night sweats. Finally having it out on Thursday next week after demanding it comes out. It is concerning how doctors fob you off as if you are a hypochondriac or superficial over weight gain when in fact we know our bodies better then they do. None of these side effects were ever mentioned by the doctor who was all to keen to insert the device when I had to have a DNC done. My Husband and I were told it is very safe and 99% preventative of falling pregnant.Read More Read Less

I am a 33 year old female battling uterine cancer. My doctor recommended that I get the Mirena along with hormone therapy with Lupron. (to further my chances of getting pregnant ) I too, was like you looking for answers on what to expect pain wise. Everybody is different everybody’s body reacts differently. For my experience, a woman who’s never had a child the pain was unbearable. The procedure didn’t last long, but the pain was still, painful to the point where I cried out. But after the marina was in and the thread was cut, I felt fine. The cramping on a scale from 1 to 10 is a mild five, but with some ibuprofen 800 mg and some bedrest the overall experience wasn’t that bad. Read More Read Less

I am 31 and this is my second birth control after a bad experience with the Nexplanon and realizing the hormones were just too much for my body to handle. I experienced anxiety and panic attacks that make me feel like I'm dying.. starting to feel the same way with the IUD and I'm afraid I'll have to have it removed soon ?? sucks.

This was my first iud really wasn’t in long enough to experience any benefits. The insertion was very painful and I had major cramping after for the day. MY 6 week ck up didn’t go well, the IUD was falling out of my uterus and so the dr. had to remove it. I’m so thankful and really didn’t like it. I will deal with heavy cycles until it’s gone. I do not recommend this treatment to women who are having heavy bleeding issues.

I've had Morena for 11 months now. My Dr SWORE to me that it would stop my long periods and extreme cramps. She really made me believe I'd only have the rest of that period I was on and then not have another period again for as long as I had the Mirena in. WRONG. The first 7 months were hell. I'd cramp and bleed for weeks at a time then have a couple weeks break and then cramp and bleed again. Now at 11 months, I still get cramps though not as horrible. My period is lighter, but still a period. Some months period will last 5 days, other months it'll last 10 days. My whole reason for wanting Mirena was to stop my periods and horrible cramps. Since I still have a period and still get cramps, I feel like this was pointless for me. I have experienced depression, mood swings, and hair loss, but I don't know that I can say it is from Mirena or just the other stress in my life. I'm 40 and have had no children, just for more info about myself.Read More Read Less

I changed from copper iud to Mirena and it’s been a game changer for me. No more severe mood swings and nasty pms. It helped regulate my fluctuations and I’m 44 years old never been pregnant and don’t necessarily want to.. Most importantly I’m able to think rationally and after nearly 2 years I’m still feeling great overall ..

If you are reading this please please do not have the Mirena coil fitted find something else. For a big percentage of women I’m certain it’s fine but there are side effects and regret daily ever having it. It stopped the constant bleeding but gave me much worse medical problems! At the age of 41 started having migraines needing medicines to control them however, much worse than those started suffering from absent seizures!! I got laughed at by medical people, Drs, not listened too simply because it is seen as an amazing thing for women but it was not for me….Read More Read Less

This is a hard review for me because equally loved and hated Merina. First off the insertion was very painful for me. I cramped for a good three days and cried most of the time. I kept it in for 4 years with no period issues but had very bad cramping my last year where I couldn't work some days because I was bed ridden. However my biggest issue was painful sex. My partner at the time and I only had one or two comfortable positions for me and once it was removed I assumed that wouldn't be the case. I WAS WRONG. I have had painful sex and issues ever since which have never gone away. I was birth control free for a year to balance my hormones before going back again. This is where I made another mistake. Becouse the IUD was all I had known for so long I decided to get another one. The second implantation was horrible! I was on the table for 30 minutes bleeding and in pain. I was having contractions on the table and when they finally got it in my body was already rejecting it. I had 3 months of no sex because I couldn't stand my husband anywhere near my vagina, I was in constant pain with cramps. After an ultrasound my uterus was swollen and irritated treating it like any other foreign object. Which my doctor said I would have to get over it and get used to it. I had it removed the next month. Over all I loved not having any period symptoms for three years. And for those years, other than painful sex, I didn't have weight gain or acne issues, I was energetic and happy. But, looking back knowing now that I would have life long issues with painful intimacy I never would have gotten it. I got it in when I was 19-20 ish yo. And removed around 24yo. I'm 30 now and I wish I could say my sex life has healed but that's saddly not the case. Read More Read Less

I have a very heavy flow, like ultra absorbency tampons filling up within an hour the first two days of my period. I chose Mirena because it was the longest lasting IUD of all of the IUDs. After a few months, my period stopped altogether. I would take a pregnancy test once a month because of all the horror stories I’ve heard. I had an ultrasound done a month after placement and an ovarian cyst was discovered. I guess that’s common with IUDs. Although Mirena was convenient and I never got pregnant, I suffered from constant headaches and debilitating migraines (I had migraines before Mirena, but never as frequent or severe). If I drank certain beer, I would get a throbbing headache and even threw up almost after my first sip a few times. I would also get hangover like symptoms after having only a drink or two. I had Mirena for over a year but it never got better. When the gyno pulled the Mirena out, I felt this immediate relief throughout my body. I miss the convenience of Mirena but have switched to nuvaring and have had no side effects whatsoever. I’d say it’s worth giving a shot if you don’t suffer from migraines or bad headaches already. I put it to control polyp and reduce estrogen effects. Insertion was easy for me. But I had continuous bleeding/spotting for 3 months, unusual hair loss, bacterial infections I never experienced in my life and worst PMS. Top of all, uterus was still generating polyp so it was truly useless for me. Got removed after really bad PMS.

I have the Mirena for 11 months now, and I get these extremely painful pelvic spasms just randomly, it's so bad that if I am at the grocery store, I stand there in front of everyone and have to hold onto something and can't speak. It's so bad that the pain shoots down my legs and they feel like they are going numb. I was hoping it will go away overtime, but it's not. The hair loss is a thing, yes. Acne around the chin, yes. Gained belly fat, yes. And my period is lighter, but it doesn't help that there still old pieces of blood coming out weeks after your period. I just got into a new relationship, and I am actually worried to get intimate with him because of this. Read More Read Less

As I go through the comments, I realize that every experience is different for each person. But stop fear mongering because your experience wasn't ideal. Technically, Mirena are recommended for women who have given birth. I'm sure things have changed which allows others to get the Mirena. I have had the Mirena twice, first for birth control, and lastly for heavy bleeding. Each time insertion was somewhat uncomfortable but never painful. I do not suffer from any of the listed side effects. Since getting the Mirena in 2018, I have had virtually no period, only some very light spotting a few times a year. I do wonder about the individuals who are experiencing "excruciating pain" and such. That's a bit concerning, nonetheless my experience with this IUD has been very pleasant.Read More Read Less

I cannot express how great having the Mirena IUD has been! As a women who is as fertal as they come it has been a God send. 3yrs and no pregnancies!! I also haven't had a period, some light spotting once in a blue moon but that's it! The only downside is that it hurts to be put in and was put in right after having my last child. I have been on the pill, the shot and wish I choose to do the IUD sooner rather then later. And have to say that some women's reviews stopped me from getting it sooner. Now I know all women are different but glad I listened to my doctor! At 39 and 5 beautiful children it was the best choice for me. And for it to last 7yrs without doing a thing and being not having to worry about taking a pill or shot is priceless!!Read More Read Less
