My son has ADD inattentive type; he does not have hyperactivity, just a complete inability to concentrate, remain organized, filter out ambient noise, remember tasks or finish tests on time. This medication has helped him greatly in all of those areas and he now finishes timed tests on time at school, a first in many years. He gets mild headaches, which is thus far the only ill effect. It's great ...

I am a 16 year old trans male. I started concerta in primary school and switched after 3 year due to severe depression and suicidal thoughts. I just re started it near the end of my junior year in high school. Its been working okay so far, but these comments kind of irk me. I can see how from a parents point of view this medication is working, but a good amount of these reviews I've seen have been...

Around the age of 6 I've taken Concerta. I'm now 17. Let me tell you that this is a very helpful drug for concentration and the only bad thing about it is when you forget to take it. I ran out during a camping trip for a week and a half and faced suicidal thoughts and felt as if I wasn't really there. My heart felt like I was being stabbed and just a horrifying experience. I forget to take it every now and then and I can easily tell. I'll get really unconcentrated and begin to just go off into my own little world. I'll sleep a lot more and my usual time I go to sleep is around midnight, when I forget to take it I go to sleep at 7. I eat a lot and feel as if I can keep on eating. It's a bad experience. I have been on a 72 mg dosage for my whole experience with it. I feel as if I do not take it, I will become a horrible student. I've always made honors in school and I can't really say that without giving the credit to this drug.Read More Read Less

Okay, I was diagnosed with ADD and was instructed to take one pill every day, for the rest of my life. Now the amount I was taking was 64mg, and after years of taking I can say that this drug has ruined my life and has caused more problems in my life ever since I started taking it. I have become Anti-Social, depressed, suicidal, and have had my growth stunted. Thank you for ruining my life. The funny thing is, that I recently stopped taking it and although I still have many personal demons, I have become more social and friendly, and despite being somewhat depressed, I have attained and newfound sense of purpose and meaning in life. Although my experience my be a rare and unusual side effect of Concerta, it is still dangerous and harmful. I have realized now, that although I became smarter and was able to focus better, I ended up becoming a zombie. I never smiled or laughed, and I was too scared to tell my parents that all this money that they had just wasted on me, for years, was only causing problems. Read More Read Less

Concerta has actually helped me with school so much and I'm very grateful. I'm 20 years old and I've only taken it for a little over 5 months and I've been on deans list and my teachers dont hate me anymore for being distracted on my computer or talking all class. However I do have to say that when I forget to take it... It's the worst depression I've ever experienced in my life and I'm not depressed. I usually cry a lot, sleep a lot, and eat a ton because i get my appetite back. If I take the pill the benefits outweigh the risks 100%. Read More Read Less

I can say that I have been taking Concerta since I was 16. I'm now 22. My dosage is quite high at 90 mg. I find that without the drug, I'm not myself. I have trouble driving, but when I'm medicated it's easy as can be. I use to have the side effects of no appetite, but found over the years, it has come back. I know that it lasts for 8-12 hours which is perfect. I do not know what I would do without it. The only thing I caution is that if you wake up later and then take the pills, I find I stay up later and cannot sleep until it has wore off. But other then that, its once a day right when I wake up. Treats my symptoms effectively, no negative interactions with several other prescriptions I take, 18's and 36's are easy to swallow. My wife notices and asks about it if I neglect to take it, thus corroborating my belief that it is effective. As a controlled substance, I have to hand-carry all renewals and have had some difficulty with some pharmacies (Safeway, i.e.) who will not fill 90 day prescriptions. I have found a locally owned pharmacy that has no problem with doing that, and billing my insurance company, charging me only the co-pay.Read More Read Less

I am still trying to figure this out.I was diagnosed with ADD just recently.I started with 36mg dose and now take 72mg (doctors orders). The benefits have been great. I am able to focus, I have more energy to do things like work out, hang out with family, and I've noticed that I am starting and finishing home projects as opposed to starting 10 different things and rarely ever completing them. I also work overnights and I don't get the "hazy/cloudy" feeling that I had grown use to anymore. And now the BAD: I feel agitated and miserable about 6-7 hours after I take it which seems to last for a while. I also get withdrawn. I get severe dry mouth and loss of appetite(which isn't that bad because I am slightly overweight). The past few days that I have taken it, I have gotten nauseous and been constipated. I am hoping that if I can get my diet right Some of these physical side effects will stop. Prior to being put on concerta, I was on Prozac for 10yrs, Effexor for 4yrs(these drugs were prescribed by a PCP) welbutin(WORST) for 2 months and now Concerta(these were prescribed by a physiatrist). I think I am going in the right direction with treatment, I'm just not sure if the benefits of conerta out weigh agitated/isolated feelings. I don't think I will be able to continue with concerta if these feelings get anymore frequent or intense. I will say that after years of self medicating and having family doctors give me drugs to "take the edge off", it was a great sense of relief to have gone to a therapist/physiatrist and finally feel like I am getting help with my issues. I wish I had gotten the correct help 25yrs ago. Hopefully this review helps.Read More Read Less

Bottom line: Depression was a very real and horrific side effect. My experience with Concerta was an absolute nightmare. I took it for about a year, and was on a daily time-release dosage. To be fair, the drug did what it was supposed to; It helped me to focus better than ever before, and it showed - my grades went from C's and D's to straight A's, all because of my increased focus. I can honestly thank Concerta for my admittance into my top-choice university. However, my time on Concerta was the worst year of my life. I became depressed and suicidal, and it took a few doctor's visits to figure out that it was not me - it was the drugs. Concerta put me into an almost zombie-like state, and I found it nearly impossible to interact with other people. Because my mind was SO hyper-focused, I honestly had trouble simply coming up with things to say to people. My thoughts never wandered whatsoever, so I was entirely unable to just make normal conversation. It was such a scary and isolating experience - I truly would never wish it on anybody. I have never found any scholarly documentation of the depressive side effects of this drug, however I have known multiple people who have taken it and also experienced the same zombie-esque results, so I fear it may not be as uncommon as I would hope. All in all, yes, this drug is effective in treating the symptoms of ADHD, however the side effects are absolutely horrific and in no way do the positives outweigh the negatives. Read More Read Less

There is a love-hate relationship between me and Concerta. I have been on it for over a decade. It helps me pay attention and do work in university and it helps me lose weight. That's just about where Concerta's benefits stop for me, which is fine. On the other hand however.. Concerta gives me insomnia, dry mouth (which can be ignored after a while), a fast heartbeat (which should be expected), and it makes me feel miserable. I also become very reliant on the drug for studying and even though you may not be mentally addicted, you will go through physical withdrawals if you go off it for even a day. If you thought your ADD was bad, wait until you go off this drug. I've been on and off it numerous times and every time I experienced numerous unwanted erections, restlessness, hunger, and a complete inability to focus. It's a living hell for people in school and the withdrawal takes a while to stop (month or more). Here is my advice. If you're prescribed this medication, know well that you are convicting yourself to Concerta in hopes that it helps you. Your doctor may think the good outweighs the risk and/or side effects, but just be prepared before you take this.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed when I took my son in 18 years ago and didn't follow through with appointments for myself because of cost. I recently went to a psychiatrist and was again diagnosed with borderline severe ADHD. She started me on Concerts 36mg. The first 2 days were ok but really didn't see a huge difference in attention, concentration or hyperness. The 3rd day I found myself crying easily and over things that would annoy me but not make me cry. By the 5th day I would hide in my bedroom crying uncontrollably, depressed beyond belief. I have since been to the directing psychiatrist who took me off of it and put me on Zenzedi 2 to 3 times a day and I feel human/normal for the first time in my life. I also learned that the two generic makers of Concerta have gotten slapped by the FDA because the 18mg & 36mg is NOT working the exact same way the brand named Concerts does. It releases it too slowly and stops 5 hours short of the 12 its supposed to go to. They haven't taken the generic off the market yet but it looks like the FDA may be pushing for it soon. Just take caution...if you start crying or feeling depressed call your doctor ASAP or go to your nearest emergency room.Read More Read Less

I am looking for photos of hives/rash caused by an allergic reaction to the drug Concerta. I took pics of the hives I broke into after taking this drug for the 1-4 time, but I can't distinguish these hives from bed bug hives. I'm not able to find any bed bugs in my apt. but have a history of being invaded by these bugs since I moved in 2.5 yrs. ago. So this is very important to me, to find any pics of hives/rashes due to being allergic to Concerta

I am an adult who was recently diagnosed with ADD which explains all of the challenges and patterns in my life dating back to childhood. As with any drug affecting the brain, I decided to try medication with great caution and asked for the lowest dose possible at the outset. The psychiatrist prescribed 18 mg of Concerta and for the first two weeks I experienced what it was like to feel normal. I didn't feel a nervous tension and a need to get a million things done at once. I felt awake at work, my mind was clear and focused and my mood was good. After two weeks came a complete 180. Suddenly I felt overwhelming sadness that kept worsening every day. There were petty external events that triggered it but my reaction was ridiculously out of proportion. I couldn't stop crying when alone and I wanted to withdraw from everyone and began to think that suicide was a possible solution as my life would never get better. Thankfully I still had a little voice inside my head that reminded me that this was not normal and that I was on a new medication. I made an appointment with the Dr. because I didn't know if I was able to just stop taking the drug (turned out I could've). But before my appointment, I wound up having a full-on panic attack at work. Thankfully the HR rep who handled this was great and understanding since has a son with ADHD. She said he too some terrible side effects with the same drug. I quit taking it and within one day felt back to my old self again. I will try a different medication that has had more positive reviews. I caution anyone trying this on themselves or their children to discuss the negatives and keep the dialogue open constantly in case someone has a similar experience but doesn't hear that little voice of reason kick in. It could have dyer consequences.Read More Read Less
