Bipolar - I took this med for one year with no blood testing. I started experiencing mixed symptoms and asked my doctor if my dosage might need to be adjusted. She then decided that my oxcarbazepine level should be checked along with my sodium. I was not even in the therapeutic range, so my dosage was increased. My sodium was only slightly low. A few weeks later my levels were checked again. I was at a low therapeutic level, but my sodium was also getting lower, so I remained on that dosage. 6 months later I had some routine blood work at my family physician's, because I had not been feeling well, flu-like symptoms that would not go away for about a month. Anyway, those labs showed my sodium level to be dangerously low (128) I let my psychiatrist know and she took me off the trileptal. I lost 7 pounds in the first 24 hours after stopping it. I had been retaining fluids causing my headaches, fatique, soreness and all the flu-like symptoms that I had. Now I am cycling between mania and depression, sometimes in the same day. I am starting Lamictal, but may not reach a therapeutic level for 6-8 weeks. If you take Trileptal make sure your doctor orders frequent labs, checking your oxcarbazepine level and sodium level. The sodium level is very important, if it drops to low, it can cause seizures, swelling of the brain, coma and even death.Read More Read Less

I have been taking this med for about 2 years for mood stabilization of bipolar disorder with many depressive episodes. It really helped and made me feel normal. I was able to stop the antidepressant I was on and haven't had any symptoms of depression this winter. My psychiatrist only checked my sodium level twice during this time and it was low, but she was not concerned. On a regular yearly visit to my family doctor, she did routine blood work and found my sodium level to be extremely low, 129. My psychiatrist repeated the test and it was 128. She told me to stop taking it as the sodium level was too low and I could have seziures or go into a coma. It's very important to have your sodium level checked regularly if you take this med. I felt so good on it I am dreading not taking it and going back to the way I used to feel.Read More Read Less

I have taken this for 5 years for mood swings and depression. When I am at 600mg twice a day, my salt goes too low even if I salt everything I eat.I have used this with Cymbalta,or Zoloft, Trazadone to name a few. My moods leveled out really well but because of the low salt problem, I'm being weaned off it to start with Lamictal.

Have been taking trileptal for over a year and it has been working. I was taking dilantin before and it made me tired and short term memory loss. Since switching I am more awake, memory loss is not bad. The only side affect is dizzy feeling but that is if I don't get enough sleep, take the meds to close together.

I take it for Bipolar disorder along with Lexapro. Seems to work. I do have hair loss--but it is not from the medication. I have had it for years since having kids. I do think some people are more prone to hair loss. It is part of aging. This drug does work. Do I want to take drugs like this--of course not. For those of us with spouses and kids--our spouses and kids should not suffer with our mood and anxiety issues. Take your medication and learn to cope with what you have. Those who love your will love you more for you following through on your end of the deal. Hair Loss--I started wearing locks (dread locks). Such seems to work well because the weak part of the hair is covered up by the stronger and longer locks. I would love to blame the medication, but in all honesty--I can not. Weight Gain--yes--but I stay active and try to eat well. Body Awareness--I do feel my body change more acutely than before. For example, if I am getting a cold--I feel it in my whole body. The same with my menstrual cycle. So, I started exercising, gym work, etc. That helped a lot. I am skinny--but you may gain weight. I just purchase better, sexier clothing. Hang in there--just love yourself with less hair and more curves. Spirtual--I focus on the spiritual part of my life to stay centered. I do not hang on to the past or look ahead to the future. I stay in the present. Read More Read Less

I have Simple Partial Complex Epilepsy with and without generalization. I just started taking Trileptal 300mg along with Keppra 500mg. I find since I started taking Trileptal with my Keppra that I am more exhausted and lazy. I still am experiencing petitmaul seizures every other day. My numbness on my right side is still there. I still talk with an accent.

My doctor gave me this medication to treat depression. I do not see any information on using this medication for that reason. Something is working but its hard to tell what exactly because I am on a few different medications.

I have been on Trileptal for 8 years to treat bi-polar disorder. I have had only two side effects... double vision, and wakefulness. The double vision occurs when I am over tired, and is easily corrected by wearing my glasses. The wakefulness has been a bit of a problem, as I feel I am not getting a full night's rest. I wake between 3-4 times a night. Other than that, it has been a very helpful drug.

I have taken trileptal for 2+ years now! I have Bipolar disorder and this medication helps with my mood swings. As we all know medication is not a miracle but can make things more managable. I have tried many other meds but Trileptal seems to be doing rather well for me. I have experienced a little spaciness and forgetfulness. Minor headaches every so often. But the overall benefits are great. I am only taking a samll dose compared to others that i know that are Bipolar. However i am rather sensitive to meds due to my Anxiety. But we all metabolise our meds and food differently! But its been wonderful not to have such severe mood swings. Read More Read Less

I have actually been prescribed this drug to help with neuropathy in feet/legs. It was at first a "mircle" of help, but like most drugs, one can quickly adjust to them. I do so even faster than most. Now its combined with lyrica to aid with the nerve ending pain. I haven't seen many posts for others being given this drug for this condition. I have talked to others in my local area who seem surprised this works, but I definetly recommend it if neuropathy is a problem and your Dr/neuro is willing to try it. Read More Read Less

I had been on the brand name for over 5yrs and was seizure free for almost 6 years. then was switched to generic 2 mths ago and was told that generic and brand name are the same, until they came out of no where. I have been back to the dr. it's like starting all over again. for some meds generic is not the same for certain conditions.

No seizures in five years. I'm concerned about some memory loss, but not sure it is related (maybe just aging). Makes me dizzy if I don't get enough sleep. I'm trying to decide whether to switch to generic.
