Bipolar - I took this med for one year with no blood testing. I started experiencing mixed symptoms and asked my doctor if my dosage might need to be adjusted. She then decided that my oxcarbazepine level should be checked along with my sodium. I was not even in the therapeutic range, so my dosage was increased. My sodium was only slightly low. A few weeks later my levels were checked again. ...

I have been on Trileptal for eight years for Bipolar I disorder. I love it. I also take Wellbutrin and Lamictal, though I consider Trileptal the stable drug. It is wonderful. I take 1500 mg if I am having a bad episode, but I don't have to stay on that dose for very long usually. I stay at 900 most of the time and it keeps me stable. I really like the ease of use that you can adjust the dosage so easily. Anyway, if you have horrible anxiety, depression, or manic symptoms, this is a great med to take.Read More Read Less

I lived my whole life with epilepsy--half of it in USSR and half of it in US. Trileptal generic (Oxcerbazipine?)is the first American brand that actually worked to make my life seizure-free in any sort of consistent manner.

I just started taking this drug at night. 300mgs. 3 days of usage the side effects hit me. Extreme dizziness, flu like symptoms, loss of thoughts, can't go to the bathroom, hostility, and blurred vision. Upon the first 2 days however it worked and increased positive thinking. At this moment I am confused as to whether I can still continue since I can't drive due to the symptoms. I have read all the reviews and it appears this drug has been very useful for many. I don't want to scare anyone off from using this however I may just be on those people that can't use this drug.Read More Read Less

I use this drug for my Bipolar II disorder. It works great for that, but it causes EXCESSIVE SWEATING for me and that has been miserable. With the excessive sweating comes horrible leg cramps. It took awhile before I realized the leg cramps were caused from loss of electrolytes. Once I replentished them with Gatorade, the leg cramps stopped, but the sweating continued until by mistake I ran out of part of my daily dose of Trileptal. The sweating got better and once I realized the mistake I'd made, I looked back at the time-line of when I started Trileptal and realized that the sweating started then. Each time we have increased the dosage, the sweating got worse and worse, until we increased it one month ago, and the sweating had become unbearable. I'm embarrassed to go out in public, to let anyone hug me, because I'm soaking wet. Who wants to hug someone who is WET. Plus, my energy is drained from the sweating, and it had gotten so bad that I was even sweating while sitting down or standing in one place not moving. That put me at wits end, and doctors who had initially blow me off about the situation, were then forced to listen and attempt to find out what was causing this. We were trying to eliminate drugs that could cause the condition, also known as hyperhidrosis, and six of my meds were pointed out by the pharmacist as potential culprits. Trileptal was not among them. Your website, however, has confirmed my suspicion of the drug responsible for this miserable condition. Thank you for your listing of side-effects, both common, infrequent, and rare. I'm taking this list to my psychiatrist and PCP to back up my thoughts of the situation. Read More Read Less

I have been taking this medication for over five years in the treatment of bipolar disorder. I take it along with other medications, but I consider this one to be my main medication. The others are for anxiety and insomnia. I've read that 3% of the people who take Trileptal develop low sodium in the blood. Of course, I was one of the 3%. I tried all sorts of things to raise my sodium level, but found it cannot be done by eating salty foods, taking salt tablets, etc. I used to take a product called E-Lyte but its effectiveness was not predictable. Then, I discovered a tonic called Zrii, an Indian tonic sponsored by the Chopra Foundation. I buy it on the internet. It raised my sodium level back to normal with no problems. It is made from exotic fruits from India. Trileptal was and is very effective for me. Recently, my psychiatrist was able to lower the dosage slightly and I am still feeling fine. He may lower it even further. I find that there are no other side effects that I can detect other than that problem with the sodium which I solved by taking Zrii.Read More Read Less

I have been on the generic for over a week (I know, not much time) but since then I have felt very anxious, my skin is drying out and I've noticed significant hair loss. I will be seeing the neurologist in less than a week and will be switching to the Brand name.

I've used the trileptal for bi polor found it great. It's the only thing that has ever helped me. And i've had the disorder for 28 years. The only thing i don't like is that it has caused my kidney and liver problem. My doctor never told me that this medication would make my sodium much much lover. I've been in the hospital for severe low sodium. It's a wonderful medication for me but, i am working my way off it. If they would improve the medication. I would be the first one on it.

I take it for my complex partial seizures. it works well. The last time I had seizure, the med was increased, and no seizures since. if it is not working for you, it is hard to say what will. You may have to try another, or have addtional meds to work with it. To anyone who is looking for relief...keep trying until you find it!

I have been taking this medication as an add on med for the zoloft I take for my ocd. A few months ago my doctor and I decided this was a better route to go after we tried cranking my zoloft up to 300mg (max dose is 200mg) with horrible anxiety side affects. This drug has worked well for me at 1200mg. It has really helped with the anxiety related to my ocd although it hasn't really done anything for my compulsive behaviors. I would recommend taking it at bedtime becase I do feel intoxicated about an hour after taking it. Also to stephbo one thing to consider for your son's seisures is that this drug targets the temporal lobe of the brain. Your son's seisures may be originating from another part of his brain so he may need another medication. Good luck. Read More Read Less
