Bipolar - I took this med for one year with no blood testing. I started experiencing mixed symptoms and asked my doctor if my dosage might need to be adjusted. She then decided that my oxcarbazepine level should be checked along with my sodium. I was not even in the therapeutic range, so my dosage was increased. My sodium was only slightly low. A few weeks later my levels were checked again. ...

I am a 26 yr old female. I have Bipolar 1. I was diagnosed when I was 19 and put on Depakote. I gained a ton of weight and walked around in a fog. I have been on 1200mg of Trileptal for about a yr and a half. I finally have control of my life.

I have been on Trileptal for about seven months now 600mg 2/day. I have never felt better. My mood swings have diminished drastically. My son and I have a better relationship now, because I am not screaming every time he does something wrong. I am more calm and relaxed, like I feel a mother should be. I also take Cymbalta for depression and anxiety. My depression still comes and goes. But at least I am not a freak show anymore. My co-workers have also noticed a change. I don't feel like ripping their heads off when something doesn't go right. ThanksRead More Read Less

my daughter was put on this medicine for manic bipolar 2 months ago. we just found out that this medication caused her HIV medication to become less effective and caused her Tcells to decrease and her Viral load to shoot up from 331 to over 2000. I am so upset that four months of trying to improve her cells and lower her viral load and her psychiatrist never checked this out beforehand, I am now looking for a new psychiatrist as of today. Please be carwful when prescribed this med.

i just started taking this medication on october 26, 2009, so it is still early for a concise opinion. it does help me sleep. it also did not affect my daily routine right off the bat like most other types of drugs i've used in the past. i could funtion with ease. refreshing, since i have an eight-year old to take care of.

No help with seizures while on the generic (taken along w/ generic Dilantin). Have been on name brands for about 3 months and (PRAISE GOD) no seizures!!! Trilpetal 2400mg/day pretty much makes me "drunk". Can't AFFORD name brands (Trilpetal approx. $600/month!!!), MDs office got me on a program w/ manufacturers (yaaay!!!). "drunk" & dry mouth or seizures... I guess I'd rather have the latter.

I used this drug for Bipolar Disorder for 2 years. Worked well but eventually started to become less effective. Increased dose caused more anxiety so now I am switching to Lamictal. Hope I don't get the rash.

I have been using Trileptal generic for 3 years now in treatment for Mixed mode ADD Bi-Polar II. Over the last 30 years of treatments, Trileptal is the only drug, that has help me feel in control. Though I will state that I combine it with Zoloft. I am at a point right now though that I am considering stopping. I am now rapidly losing my hair, and I really do not want to be bald. I tried Rogaine, but it's not helping. I was browsing this site just to verify hair loss as a side-effect, and I see others stating that only the generic seems to be causing hair loss.??? Not sure my insurance will let me get the brand-name but I guess it's worth a shot.Read More Read Less

My 6yr old daughter has been taking it for a couple of years now and it has worked great, the only added issue has been some bad constipation, but a stool softener has helped to ease this side effect.

Has anyone had any troubles with the generic form of Tripleptal, specifically Oxcarbazepine? I was inpatient for severe anxiety/depression and they took me off Lamical due to liver readings being twice what they should, and put on on brand name Trileptal. I had been on it 3 weeks when I got home and had the Rx filled (for what I assumed was Trileptal but turned out to be the generic). It took a week, then I was in a stupor, joint pain/weakness so bad I could barely walk, loss of coordination, had trouble seeing with/without my glasses, wasn't sleeping, itchyness, acne, severe headache, trouble talking, confusion, etc. It was like I was in someone else's body. I could only sit and stare and cry. For some reason it occured to me (just last night) that I'd read something about some people needing the brand name vs. the generic. I got the brand name today, and have taken only one dose (about 6 hours ago), and can already tell my joint pain isn't as bad, I'm more alert, not as confused, have more strength, etc. I looked it up and I seemed to be experiencing some of the more moderate to severe side effects of Oxcarbazepine. I'm hopeful that being on the brand name rather than the generic will be the key. I would like to hear any comments people may have. If the switch doesn't "fix" the side effects, my body simply can't tolerate the side effects. I've tried just about every other med in this category and don't have a lot of options left. I have been taking this medication nearly 7 years. I take 1800mg, which I take at night as I tend to be drowsy if taken in the morning. I am Bipolar/Mania and mild ADD. This medication has helped me to control Anger mood swings and has worked well with other depressant medications that I take. I have tried to come off this medication however was unsuccessful. I have maxed the dosage at 2400mg and found I was too tired and slow responsive. I do believe this is a safer solution to the MAOI's and Lithium as I have chosen not to go that route. My son (12 years old) has Coffin-Lowry Syndrome, and developed a variety of seizures as he started puberty. He would have a night-time seizure every two to three weeks. He has been seizure-free (as far as we know - he is nonverbal) for over six months on Trileptal Oral, and at a pretty low dosage - 3ml 2x/day. He has been sleeping a little longer at night, but this medication has not slowed him down during the day, or affected his mood at all. The oral suspension seems to taste fine as well, since he will spit out meds he doesn't like. It has been easy to administer with the dropper as well.Read More Read Less

I took Trileptal for bipolar I rapid cycling, mixed states, for two years and it worked very well. On a routine lab, my sodium was at a dangerously low 120. I was hospitalized and did not drink much, if any, fluids. I was taken off the drug. But a year later, having tried other drugs that did not work as well, I am beck on Trileptal at a much lower dose in conjunction with Lithium. I can not drink much water with the Triletal so now my kidneys and thyroid are shot because Lithium requires a lot of fluid intake. The search is on for another drug. Read More Read Less

Works for me to control bipolar mania. Taken for over 6 years, 1500mg at night. Side effects are dizziness, sleepiness (helpful), dry mouth, and a numb face. The sleepy, "stoned" feeling rarely goes completely away, but I've become used to it and find it preferable to being an unstable provider for my wife and kids. If other bipolar treatments aren't working for you, I recommend you give this a try for 3-6 months. Ramp up slowly. I started at 300mg and got as high as 1800mg daily before the dizziness was intolerable. Backing off to 1500 left me in a functional state. Good luck!Read More Read Less

When first prescribed it seemed to work. Not realizing how the side effects creeped up on me.Feeling like I was on a rollercoaster of emotions, never knowing what I might feel in the next 5 minutes. Anger, frustration, saddness, sucidal thoughts, numb & dumb, nervous, anxious. I could go on & on. I wasn't able think, concentrate, or focus. Pains in my stomach as well as hightened menstural pain. I couldn't even remember what to get at the grocery when it was only one thing that I needed to buy. I also felt as though I was coming down with a cold, hot & cold , several times, especially the last 2 weeks I took it. Always tired & drowsy yet not able to sleep. Brusing from who knows where? I took these meds twice daily 300mg each time, totaling 600mg daily. I believe I had 2 seizures while on it. The last time I had enough! This is the 3rd or 4th med I've tried for seizures. Do any meds actually make you better or are doctors just legal drug dealers trying to find the right combo to help? Read More Read Less

My son takes this along with Depakote and I think that is too much!! He can barely walk now and falls often. I am pleading with Doctors to lower his meds.
