I've been taking depakote for 9 months and it has some what helped my mood swings, but it has really improved my concentration and anxiety problems. Depakote combined with adequate nutrition and exercise is the ultimate treatment for my bipolar dis order.People need to realize that medication alone will not provide them the best results. The worst thing about the depakote for me, is occasionally I...
This makes you really not care at all. I mentioned to my Psych, MD that I would take a few extra any time I knew I was going to be under stress or in an irritating environment self medicating. He switched me to Latuda and I have been going down on this. I feel 10X more alive no more drooling no more numb emotions I actually feel like myself

Terrible side effects! It didn't help at all, but made it much worse. Do your homework on this medicine before taking!!! The pros don't out weigh the cons.

Depakote and the elderly. My 90 yr old mother who weighs approximately 93 pounds and is now basically bedridden was given this medication (for seizures?) and has become more somnolent, had brown thick oozing stools, and less urine output. Her neck is becoming rigid (due to bedrest?) and she cannot touch her chin to chest on demand. Is there criteria for a reduction in dose when the medication is effective for whatever it was ordered for (lowest effective dose)? Are there dosing guidelines by weight in the elderly? She also takes Risperdal and spironolactone. Read More Read Less

I have taken depakote and Zoloft for 10 years for mood disorder NOS. The combination has worked wonders for me. I also did cognitive behavior therapy for the first two years when I was diagnosed to help as well. I sleep great, laugh, enjoy life, and the anxiety is completely gone. The Zoloft/ depakote turns off the rapid thoughts like a light switch! I had hypo mania with more depressive episodes. The psychiatrist said the anxiety is caused from the rapid cycling. It feels great to be anxiety free, not worry and be able to handle life as a confident person. I do occasionally take Xanax when in extremely stressful situations- once every 3-4 months. I exercise daily and eat fairly healthy. The only IDE effect was gaining about 30 pounds over the last 10 years. However, I would rather be 30 pounds heavier and not feel depressed, suicidal, anxious, and paralyzed. Read More Read Less

I took Lamictal for about 2 1/2 yrs. and still experienced mood swings every four months. When I crash I become almost completely dysfunctional unable to complete normal daily chores, have no desire to see family or friends, cry often, stay in bed, have anxiety attacks. I become a reverse of the person I am, positive, outgoing, family oriented. Since taking Depakote generic (Divalproex SOD DR 250 mg.I have not crashed, however I have only been on Depakote since 3/26/14, so it has been app.9 wks (a little over 2 months) and I'm praying I don't crash in another two months. I began this cycling eight years ago at the age of 59 and Dr.'s did not diagnose me as bi-polar until 3 yrs about 3 yrs. ago though it runs in the maternal side of my family and of my 3 children tow are bi-polar. It has been a horrible time for my husband & family members & friends who have watched how I crash app. every four months. I can feel when I am going and then about 3 months later I can actually feel myself coming back to normal. I'm praying that with the assistance of my new psychiatrist, Depakote, and having a correct diagnosis my mood will stabilize. That is what I have asked for and prayed for so long. During the past eight years I have had many Psychiatrist's for many different reasons, most not of my choosing, and most were quacks, pill pushers, not interested in me or my well being. I am being completely honest in saying this. Read More Read Less

Finally, after many years of trying so many medications for bipolar, Depakote works! I feel like a new person! Only 500 mg at night before bed also help me sleep sound. I have a new outlook on life. It is also good for those who have social anxieties.

I found depakote tolerable with no side effects in the begining, but since 1 year I have gained 45 pounds and can't seem to lose it no matter what I do. so that's my only complaint. Ive been on many other anti-siezure meds, and they tore me up. so I'll take the wieght gain, and my dosage is kinda low and still works well.I'm greatful for that.

This medication saved my life. Before going on it, I was having frequent seizures with loss of consciousness and even brain swelling post-seizure. My life had been reduced to long hospital stays with only a week or so at home to recover before the next seizure put me back on the neurology ward. Depakote is what stopped the cycle. In the time I've been on it I've only had two major seizures, and both were a result of my doctors playing with the dose. I have my life back. It really has been a miracle drug for me.
