I take zaleplon (the generic form of Sonata) when I wake up in the middle of the night after sleeping only 4-5 hours. I am wide awake at this time and find that if I do nothing, I can't get back to sleep for at least another 2 hours. Since this medication is effective for only a few hours, I take a pill. It works quickly (10-20 minutes) and I sleep for another 3-4 hours which does give me a nic...

Has helped me sleep without side effects. Is the only sleep med that I've taken that hasn't caused side effects. Also doesn't leave me with that "hangover" feeling the next day.

Made me confused, irritable and cranky. All I did in bed was watch the clock pass 1:11/2:22/3:33/4:44, etc. When I got up to pee, I had trouble walking due to unsteady balance. Will never take this again. The experience was, quite frankly, frightening.

I was using Lunesta 3mgs. many years. My doctor reduce to 1mg.because I presented some side effects. She descontinue the Lunesta a prescribed me the Sonata generic which my medic plan didn't cover.I don't have troubles in sleeping since it is effective after an hour before I use it.After 4 hours I am awake and can't sleep again. The dose is 5mgs.Yesterday I took another 5mgs dose and slept 2hours more.Don't like this medication I will talk with my doctor to prescribe me a best medication.

Doesn't work if you truly are an insomniac. Nyquil is more effective and Nyquil only puts me to sleep SOMETIMES and leaves me drowsy all day the next day. Sonata was less effective than Nyquil- made me drowsy, but did nothing to help me sleep. I was up for hours after taking it, and once I got to sleep, I was up every hour following, got 4 hours of sleep, then could not sleep anymore. Ended up exhausted all day.

This drug is different from Ambien and Lunesta in that it doesn't make you feel sleepy quickly after taking your dose. It starts to work in about an hour, and if you eat before taking it can take longer to kick in. The biggest problem with this med for me is the dreams. They can be very crazy, scary, and seem to be very long. Sometimes I do have pretty bad, vivid nightmares. I also seemed to build a tolerance to 10mg quickly, and am now on 20mg. I would give this drug a C overall, It works for me, but sometimes I wonder if the dreams are worth it.Read More Read Less

Zaleplon does what I want it to do: it stops my mind from dealing with issues better done after a night of sleep. Once I am asleep, I stay that way, or, if I haven't fallen asleep by a certain time, say midnight, I can catch at least four more hours of restful repose without feeling drowsy upon waking.

Review attempt #2. Sonata works for me. One of the sleep problems I have is falling asleep; my mind just does not want to "turn off". It races from re-thinking details of the past days/week/etc. to rapidly flashing images or from suddenly remembering where I had put lost items to making my short & long term To Do lists & so on & so on. I must have tried every OTC med on the market as well as several Rx meds. Sonata is the only one that helps. I have been taking the generic (5 mg Zaleplon) for 2+ years. It almost always puts me to sleep quickly & I wake up feeling rested, alert, with no drowiness or sluggishness. It is true it is a short-time sleep med (4 hours) but I usually have no trouble falling back to sleep after that. There have been only a few, periodic adverse side effects, notably if awakened before its effectiveness "wears off", I have experienced dizziness & disorientation briefly; so lesson learned; I don't take it if know I'll have less than 4 hours of "bedtime". Occasionally I have a nightmare (which may or may not be due to the med). I too wonder about long term use but . . . I've decided to take my chances because without the much needed rest this med affords me, long term anything might not even be on the menu! :) Read More Read Less

Sonata has worked extremely well for me. I have had sleep problems periodically for my entire life. I usually fall asleep easily, but during stressful times, I tend to wake up at 3:00 a.m. without being able to fall back to sleep. Because Sonata works for just 4 hours, I can take it only on the nights that I need it. I take it at 3:00 a.m. I took Ambien for a long while, and didn't like it because I felt stupid and hung-over in the morning. Also, I don't like taking a prescription sleep drug every night. Sonata has been my 'miracle' drug for a few years now. Some weeks I don't take it at all, but the security of having a reliable sleep-solution in my medicine cabinet means that I sleep better, even on some nights whenI don't take it! (Also, Sonata is the perfect sleep-aid for long air flights and as an aid to recover from jet-lag.)Read More Read Less

I have tried (and liked) Lunesta. Insurance made me try something different. I was scared of Ambien so I chose to try Sonata and have been very pleased with the results. It makes me tired so I can sleep. I get up feeling great. No memory problem with this like I had with Lunesta. I have no ill side effects from it. I was apprehensive at first to try it but once I did I was very glad I did. It's cheaper and doesn't leave a funny taste in my mouth like Lunesta.
