Effective - as a birth control it was excellent Ease of use - I was carefree while I had it in (4 years). The insertion was painless, but I did have bad cramps for 5 days. Felt like mini labour pains. Satisfaction - not at all. I was happy for the first year, but then I got acne that would not go away, facial, chin and neck hair, continuous yeast infections that wouldn’t subside even with medi...

Worst experience ever. First of all the insertion was incredibly painful. I have a generally high pain tolerance but oh my god. My gyn just ignored my screams of pain and told me to stay calm. Then afterwards I kept bleeding and spotting every few dyas for about 6months. But even after that the cramps never went away. I had horrible cramps, also in the middle of my cycle, before my period, during my period,... several times per month. Never before did I experience this kind of period pain. It would wake me up at night, painkillers didn't work. Other side effects I experienced were: developed an ovarian cyst, more acne (never had problems with acne before), more sweating and different smell of sweat, more irritable and more mood swings. My gyn brushed all of these of as normal period symptoms. Finally after +2 years I went to a different gyn who removed it immediately after my story and now I have my first period completely cramp-free. Don't believe that pain is normal, it is not.Read More Read Less

I got the kyleena in september of 2021. I have had nothing but heavy periods since. They last anywhere from 14-20 days with only 5-7 days between. I wanted to wait a year to see if things would even out and the hormonal acne I initially had did subside after the first year but the bleeding has continued. I'm getting a remove in a week and I could not be more thrilled.

Insertion was easy, next couple of days I had some cramping but nothing too horrible. However, I do have some concerns. I got it in a rush and I have had so many unanswered questions and it has caused me so much pain and anxiety. My regular period cramps improved for a few months, and then it has been horrible this past month. I've had constant yeast infections that I just realized could be caused by the IUD. Medication has not worked to help these either. I'm thinking about getting it removed because it is just a hassle at this point. As for it's effectiveness at preventing pregnancy, I've had no problems with that so far. I would recommend it if not for the stress and pain it has caused. Read More Read Less

Felt like mini labour pains. Satisfaction - not at all. I was happy for the first year, but then I got acne that would not go away, facial, chin and neck hair, continuous yeast infections that wouldn’t subside even with medication, weight gain, and I’m still figuring out what else. If you really want to try it, give it a year to allow for symptoms before you decide if it’s for you or not. I won’t be going on it again. I’ve never had acne and now at the age of 30 I feel ridiculous having acne, even after having it removed 4 months ago. Hopefully my body recovers soon. I was much happier on the pill. I will give my body a break and go from there. Read More Read Less

I got it two weeks ago. The insertion was painful and I felt like the first day of my period with cramping when I initially got it. The next day I had no pain and since then I literally forgot about it. I will say though that I definitely notice my appetite is stronger and I have been getting a little pudgy. Watch your appetite or you will blow up (get fat). They keep saying that it doesn't make you gain weight, and by technicality it doesn't, but it may increase your appetite which will...make you gain weight indirectly. Read More Read Less

Some background information on myself: Australia/Never been pregnant/153cm tall/48kg I had the Kyleena inserted 10 days ago, every single day I have been in agonising pain. The insertion was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life (I've had my tonsils removed and a 10cm ovarian cyst removed). I struggled myself on a bus after the insertion, afraid I was going to faint getting to my boyfriends place 15 mins away. Once at his house I hunched myself on the toilet constantly as it was the only place I felt comfortable. My back hurt so badly I couldn't sit against anything or lie down. I felt so nauseous constantly and so drained of energy I wasn't sure that if I did vomit I would be able to aim it away from myself. At some points of the day it got so bad I was screaming and crying because it genuinely felt like I had a tornado of knives in me. I maxed out on all of the ibuprofen I could for the day and the pain only subsided minorly. Next day I was fine for some reason, like I had no issues at all, as if everything I had experienced just went away overnight? But nothings ever that simple, my pain came back the day after my 'good' day. And I've been in pain since. I haven't left my house, all my walking I've done is around the house and even then it's minimal. The pain has reduced to abdomen cramping pain (like 1st day period cramps), luckily I don't have the other symptoms anymore. I don't feel well enough to be in a car, to travel anywhere, or to walk anywhere. And when I do walk it's slow, catching my breath in pain walking up stairs. I'm not someone who gets like this, I'm fit, I used to go to the gym 3 times a week. I'm slender built with some muscle and I feel like I've been reduced to a shell of my former self. I've stopped doing everything I love, I'm depressed, I can't go anywhere without pain. I'm hoping tomorrow to get it removed. It's only been 10 days, part of me thinks maybe I'll just wait it out just a bit longer but I can't live like this. I'm sure this contraception works for some people, and I'm glad it works for them. It just didn't work for me. I'm not sure if it's because I have a small build, maybe my body just doesn't like it? If anyone is thinking about getting it, please give yourself some time off work and someone who can take care of you for a few days.Read More Read Less

I love this little iud! The insertion part wasn’t too great, but I was given medication to dilate the cervix beforehand to make the insertion process less painful (wasn’t even painful, just awkward and uncomfortable more than anything). Pros: Lightened my periods. Prevents pregnancy. LARC-set it and forget it birth control. Lighter cramps. Heightened my libido/friskier lol! Cons: Hormonal acne (went away though). Oily skin. Bleed/spotted for a solid two months—temporarily. Fatigue. *When adjusting to the hormones, can make you feel sick and give you a headache/migraine and nausea. It’s like a transitional phase, so to speak. ^The above cons are all gone, too. Read More Read Less

This form of birth control works really well, it just didn’t work for me. I liked that I could just forget about it but after almost 3 years on it I was still getting really bad cramps each month that didn’t relate to a period. The big factor for me however was that I started getting really bad body/ facial hair, like chest hair, beard hair, upper lip hair, etc. I was shaving it 1-2 times a week. I know that the IUD didn’t give me hair, instead it just let my body do what it naturally does ( and I do come from a naturally hairy family), so I would just keep that in mind when starting it! IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ANY ACNE, DONT. Ruined my confidence! I have always had some acne, but mostly just a few whiteheads before my period but I got horrible Cystic acne all over my body right after I got this IUD and I waited over a year to see if the side effects would subside but never did. It's now been 6 months since I had it removed and I finally am seeing less cystic acne but my WHOLE body has dark scars, and I mean everywhere, my thighs, butt, back, up my arms and my face. AWFUL.
