Zyprexa for me was the best medication for stabilizing my moods. It immediately calmed me down, helped me get my anxiety under control, and I finally could sleep for more than four hours. The reason for the high dissatisfaction is first, I was sleepy ALL THE TIME. I went from four hours sleep to 12 or more hours sleep, and even after all that I was still sleepy. I had a long commute to wor...

This medication had done wonders for me in a very short amount of time. I was very manic and had racing thought and so hyperactive I was literally pacing the floor. I had not slept in weeks untill I took zyprexa. I would call it a miracle drug if it weren't for the intense hunger and cravings. I have gained 10 lbs in 3 weeks.

My son took this for 5-6 years, gained 60lbs, he only had paranoia, not schizophrenia, he died on Sept 7, 2011, from a heart disease, including heart 2x size of normal, and blocked coronary artery. His mental status was taken down from that of a normal 38 year old to that of a IQ of 80. He had served in the Airforce during desert storm, so you know he had exellent health prior. I wish I had loooked this info up prior to letting him contiue on it. He was going to a VA DR in a clinic, so that should explain some ofit. I would not recommend this at all.Read More Read Less

I began taking this drug after my first manic episode. It helped me deal with my depression but I hated my life while I was on it. I had to get 10 hours of sleep or I would not be able to function. The first day my dose was too strong and I slept for 30 hours. I fixed my dose but I still gained an annoying amount of weight. But honestly the worst part was planning my entire life around when I would be able to basically pass out for 10 hours. It is good for dire crisis situations. When I got off it I had a suicidal episode and felt completely worthless. Worse than any of the lows in my depression. Again I would not take this drug unless you need a quick boost to get your life back on track.Read More Read Less

Hi: I am looking to hear from others who have had similar bad side efx. I started taking zyprexa in '99 (to the present day) for years of sleep deprivation, wasn't feeling myself, etc. It soon started to help me sleep & dream (REM) -- which was nice, although I did gain 50 pounds in a year or 2. Around 2001, I began having trouble with stuttering (speech) -- talking is extremely difficult now; sleep apnea (I go into respiratory arrest while asleep and have to tell myself to breathe/inhale when I wake up with oxygen deprivation in my brain--feels like a near death experience); and also some numbness/stroke like symptoms. I would love to hear from anyone who has experienced any similar (neurological) symptoms while on zyprexa. I would also LOVE to file a lawsuit against Eli Lilly for damages, but getting medical & scientific proof linking the zyprexa to the symptoms I experience is difficult, if not impossible. BTW.....here's a pharmaceutical cost tidbit for you. When I started taking zyprexa in 1999, it cost $6.00 per tablet (retail). Twelve years later, it now costs more than double per tablet retail....thank goodness for insurance, but just goes to show how much Eli Lilly loves to profit from this. Also, in case you haven't heard, the patent on zyprexa expires in 2012. Read More Read Less

I take Symbyax which is a prozac and zyprexa combo - it changed my life! - I've been on a lot of different meds and by far this is the best I've ever taken -fast acting and no side effects - I'll never use anything else!

I was offered zyprexa about 5 years past. I never thought I needed the drug but my doctors pushed it and not knowing any better I complied. I had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and drugged unbelieveably up to the point where I couldnt feel, think or relate to others. I slept all day everyday and gained 70 pds. I thought " is this what i want from my life?" Slowly I weaned off the Zyprexa and Celexa and others and stayed on the lithium since its a salt not a drug. learning that my asshole father pressured the doctors all these years to keep me sedated b/c of his sexual abuse to me. Ive been good so far. Trouble sleeping but it gets better. Im under therapy and still see a doctor but I have a second chance in life. If you think something is wrong and doesnt feel right it usually is. Dont wait for that second chance that will never come. Do something about it!Read More Read Less

I had insomnia for weeks. Would literally stay up 3 nights in a row. Mood swings were way out there. I had tried all of the prescriptions for insomnig, anxiety, depression,I was going out of my mind not sleeping. I was at the doctor every week it seemed like. I thought I was bipolar but I nevr told the doc that. But he finally gave me Zyprexa and I slept the whole night through woke of happyy as a lark. My mood swings have evened out and I haven't cried for weeks I sleep every night now. I can't believe the difference. I recommend giving it a try. Ask your doc.Read More Read Less

Zyprexa was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. My (now EX) wife took me some quack that handed this posion out like it was candy. I gained 90 pounds in 6 months and was reduced to a zombie that slept 14-16 hours a day. The panic attacks that the drug was supposed to be preventing actually got far worse and started happening in my sleep. I went off the drug AMA and detoxing from it was hellish. A year later I still have the occasional mild panic attack which I just deal with as best I can. The weight almost fell off me, I'm back around 200 a year later and I was pushing 300. This is a very powerful drug that I suppose may help people but it should only be used by people that are very, very ill. Read More Read Less

The key to gaining benefits from this drug is to keep the dose at the lowest possible effective possible. It is the ONLY drug I've ever taken that eliminates psychosis. Yes, there is weight gain-but I have learned to seek my intense sugar cravings in fruit. I wouldn't dream of stopping my zyprexa!

Other = Dual Diagnosis Zyprexa is an evil thing like thalidomide. 5 months like a zombie followed by horrible withdrawl includind anxiety to the point of daily vomitting. This Zyprexa has the abilty to cause harm that outweighs any benifit.

This medication caused me to gain 40lbs in 2 months. As a petite woman (I'm only 4'10) this has been devastating! The medication definitely helped with my anxiety, but it caused me to be in a constant 'blank' state, little to no emotions or feelings. I felt tired all the time and felt as though I needed to sleep constantly. I stopped taking the medication on my own, against my doctor's recommendation. Coming off the med was difficult, in the first week after discontinuing I felt more emotionally unstable than I ever have in my life, much more so than before I began the medication. It's been over a month since I quit taking it, and even though I'm working out 4 days a week and eating an extremely low calorie & low carb diet the weight is not coming off! I'm beginning to worry that this medicine has somehow caused me permanent obesity! I will say that this may be an effective medicine for someone in an extreme crises situation, or in such a severe manic state that they're willing to gain weight and possibly destroy their body in exchange for stabilizing their mood, as it does "work" in the sense that it prevents one from feeling just about anything! I have been on countless medications to help control the voices and they all worked a little. Zyprexa is the only med that makes the voices go completely away. I have been on fifteen different meds, and zyprexa is the best. I didn't give it five stars because I have gained a lot of weight and my blood sugar has become elevated. but overall a real life changing medicine.

WATCH OUT!! I gained 55 pounds in just two weeks on this drug which did not make me sleep. Now i have high blood pressure, and bursting with water built up in me. cant even walk or wear shoes. feet and legs feel as if they are tightly bound with bandages. so now i must still deal with bipolar and try to drop weight.
